______________
She walked as fast as she could. It was almost 11:00 Pm but the roads in Mumbai were still high on traffic. She hated this kind of situations, one reason she liked America better. She felt like jumping out of her car and running. She did not have the time to roll her eyes or even groan. She was in a hurry.
She was at the Juhu beach. Where he had asked to meet her. She was surprised at the sudden need first, she even asked him but the reply that came made her believe that she was deeply needed.
'I need you. I need help.' He had said and that was the only thing her brain and her heart needed to make her come here without any questions asked.
She just cursed the people who were in front of her. She just wished that she would reach to him on time. God knows, how long he hand been sitting on the sand looking at the water and disturbing it by throwing stones in it periodically. She knew he was disturbed about something, his voice clearly displayed it. She just prayed to god to make her cross this crowd of people. It was making her feel claustrophobic. But more than that she wished that hewouldn't be pushed off the edge.
With a huff of breath, Shakti was finally able to make it out of the sea of humanity. She sighed. She straightened herself a little, re-hooking her bag to her shoulder, straightening her clothes and running a hand through her hair. She wiped the sweat off her upper lip and pushed on with her journey to respond to a friend in distress.
She walked on the sand, her slippers in her hand. If somebody saw we here at this time, they would be surrounded by fans, but she couldn't care less, Kunwar needed her. And she is going to be there for him. There were handful of people at this side of the beach, most of them looked couples who had come to enjoy this soon to be eventful night. And a bunch of college kids, laughing away unaware of what challenges they will face in life further.
Her eyes found a familiar figure, dressed in a white shirt and blue jeans, throwing stones in the water just as she had expected. She smiled a little at her fate but then it soon diminished when she noticed a green bottle kept right beside him. She was immediately scared, has the situation gone so much out of hand and she wasn't around to help him? She asked herself. She rushed towards him and placed her hand on his shoulder, when he turned she was shocked. His was flushed from booze, he had dark circles around his red, puffy eyes. He looked like a wreck.
Shakti wanted to yell at him for the amount of intoxication he had taken but she couldn't, he looked broken hearted and she just couldn't so she just gave in to the sympathy call. She would never be angry on him anyway, she was too much in love with him to do so. So, instead she sat beside him, intertwining their fingers, neither of them looking at each other, just staring at the waves as they touched the shore and went back.
He didn't look at her, he knew it was her. He knew she'd come. She always does. That's why she's his best friend. He can always count on her. And, besides, no one in there right mind would sit with a drunken stranger. He didn't want to look up. He was ashamed of how much he had to drink. Shakti hated it when he drank too much. But he couldn't help it anymore. He felt like life was taken out of his core and death was replaced into it.
"She's getting married." Kunwar choked out of his sore throat.
"Who is?" Shakti asked, knowing the answer.
He took some time and then mustered the courage to say her name. "Charlie."
Shakti closed her eyes and sighed in grief. Charlie, his ex-girlfriend. They broke up three years ago and Kunwar had claimed he had been over her a million times, but seeing his face now, he clearly wasn't. She did not know which part hurt the most, the fact that Kunwar was in a terrible place or the fact that the man she loved... Was still in love with someone else. But at that moment, her feelings for him were useless. He needed a friend and that's what she has to be right now, just like what she's always been... a friend.
