Many themes run through this and it is rather complex. The most overwhelming point is that fate lay heavy on that sabha that day. The "master plan" Krishna had to end the adharma that held sway over that yug that he came to end (i.e. dwapar yug had to end and Kali yug ushered in). The atrocities in that sabha had to in that sense take place to set the wheels in motion to have a war that was not just a war for personal revenge but was a dharma yudh. But for a dharma yudh to be justifiable, the adharma ironically has to be of such proportions that the resultant carnage will be digestible to all. However, its not as simple as it is fated and so it must happen. That is why each person had a choice there and was free to exercise that choice.
However, that was a further thread. Even when following their dharma, these great heroes you have named and others like the Pandavas, were all bound by their code of honour, which was actually a mistaken code as it wasn't able to differentiate between what they believed dharma and what was really their duty.
The people in question who abhorred what was happening still felt bound to accept it, They had their own justifications- Yudhistir himself took the decision that led to that situation, they were bound to Hastinapur, bound by oaths, bound by "dharma" (of their own interpretation) and thus they gave effect to that fateful day which made the war a certainty in the future. It is like we say- "paap ka ghada jabh bhar jaata hai ...". It takes us back full circle to
"Yadaa yaada hi dharmasya, gyanir bhavti bharata, Abhyudhdhanam adharmasya ...etc".
Hence the Lord himself had to take an avatar to destroy his own created world to pave the way for a new era:).
Have done by best but it is difficult to explain so hope what I said makes some sense:)

Bheesm is always hiding away under his stupid pran and nonsense of Dharma

Drona has given up his Brahman Dharma and started living as Kshatriya for revenge.
He is neither Brahman nor a Kshatriya.
Just following his whims and Fancies

Whatelse can we expect from these old hags

bheeshma was bounded by the oath that he'll not disobey the king.. as he thought he'll see his father in the king... and that time was always bounded by oaths and pratigyas... and that was considerd dharma... and lord krishna came.. and told us... dharma can never be bounded by words.. its always above it!!!
