THE FOUR DAYS
Chapter-13:
Thirukkural: (Chapter-68; Poem-676)
An act is to be performed after considering the exertion required, the obstacles to be encountered, and the great profit to be gained (on its completion).
-Thiruvalluvar.
Morning:
"Chottu! Check the police complaints of missing cases, back to a week's time."
"Sir!"
"Since you can't hide a girl more than a week and inform the police formally now that you have her in your custody!"
Arjun was talking softly; it seemed he was thinking aloud.
"Sir! May be he was waiting for Devananth to arrive into the scene or maybe he got the guts now!" I said.
"No doubt he got!" he snarled, "But still it is a risk to keep a girl a week, changing hands is easy, if that's the idea!"
"Most probably, the kidnap must have been done yesterday morning to night!"
What's his purpose? Why he sent that message to me? Why now?'
He resumed pacing the floor as he thought 'Something doesn't add up here!'
Another Event in the Q-Room:
I moved in with my things as he looked up from his chair.
I spread them on the table and took a seat.
He was watching me nervously, I could say.
I know he was not much happy about my intrusion. But I did not care it much.
If I was to enter into the questioning room, I've to tell you what, I would be dead serious comparing to Arjun, for that matter.
I might allow him even to cry, if he wished to and I would wait outside for him to finish.
But not today, I had to act fast today.
I set my laptop on the table and took the print out of his call records back from a month.
I gave him his mobile.
He did not understand the situation; he looked me uncertainly.
Then I started explaining him.
I cleared my throat.
"Can you tell me from which number he called you?"
Still I was giving him the mobile.
"How can I? He called me from land lines! And it was not from the same one every next time!"
He seemed as if he was in no mood to get it.
"Give it a try!" As I persuaded him further, he touched the mobile at last.
"I want you to think back and tell me something, whether he called in the morning, evening or in the night.
Was there a pattern? Did you hear any specific sound when he called on the other end? Anything, think back and tell me!"
I waited for him to think.
"Usually he called... mostly in the mornings, one time he called in the evening. I don't know it was the last time or the previous one to it."
"Good!" I encouraged him.
"And he called me after eleven O'clock in the mornings, I'm sure about it!"
"That's it!"
He had really started thinking back!
I saw a ray of light across his face.
"I even saved his number after his first call!"
He said triumphantly.
"Wow! That's clever of you!"
He started ransacking his mobile and extended it to me, to show his cleverness in proof.
It was a land line number all right!
It came from a public booth.
He had saved it as Customer-X'.
The call had come in at 11:30 am one fine Thursday.
"Did he call every week? More than once in a week? Any particular day in a week? Anything, tell me!"
"Not every week!"
"I see!"
"Couldn't say more than once in a week!"
"Mm...mm!"
"Don't know if it was of a particular day in a week!"
"----"
He had made my work as a difficult one now within moments.
"Right! Tell me the whole story!"
"I've already told you that sir-"
"Tell me your daily role!"
He started telling me from dawn to dusk and from evening to night, except the bed-time stories he told to his child.
"Now tell me when he called the first time? You must have been surprised at his knowledge about you! Once you cut the call what did you do next?"
"Mm... Yes I was surprised that instant! Once he cut the call...I was...I was...No! Vimalesh came! He told me that his wife was going to her mother's house. So he asked me to drop her in-"
"Well, now you said to him ok' and saved the number for future use."
"Yes, I did. I didn't know it was a public booth number. When I saved it Vimalesh said it was!"
"Right, then he said at what time her bus was and at what time she wanted to go to the bus stand!"
"No! She went in train and-"
"That's fine! Now tell me when he did the second call!"
"Then I... not the next two days. I'm sure. I went to Meeraj. Then I..."
"Well, when he called the next time, you wouldn't get his voice and he had to introduce himself yet again!"
"Yes, you are correct!" He appreciated my help and continued, "He did. I remember it now. He called after four days and said he was the one who called me last week!"
"That means the next Monday!"
"Yes. He called at eleven O'clock in the morning, when I was about to leave the house after the trip to Meeraj!"
"We are doing really well!" I flattered him.
And by this way I got more information about his house chores mostly and some of them were really starting to settle the coins in place.
Finally I got something to report.
When I was collecting my things, he asked,
"Sir, what about me? I've told you everything I knew!"
"We'll discuss it once we caught him. And perhaps you can ask him yourself, this same question that time!"
I came out of the questioning room.
"Sir! The revised and minimized call records of Devananth Jaisar!"
He saw the report and asked, "So there is a pattern in the time of calling! And twice he used the same booth!"
"That's right, sir! And the calls came from different booths of same area, if we can say so!"
"Meaning?"
I gave him the street map of that particular area. I had marked the positions of the booths in it.
"Sir, these booths, not all of them, but most of them covered the area. The remaining booths are in the surroundings not far from this area!"
"I see!"
"And one of the calls that have come from the same booth is the last call and it has come in the evening!"
"Right! Try the booths!"
As Ayesha and I came out of the entrance, Chottu came in with some papers in hand.
"Do you know Ayesha, seeing a bear is a good sign? Come on Ayesha, Everything will be fine!"
Ayesha smiled at me.
"He is right, if it was wearing specs especially!" Chottu returned and we parted in opposite directions as Ayesha laughed at us and joined me.
