Birth of Karna's grandkids

In the meantime, Kunti, who had been hanging like Trishanku in the heavens as a result of Kuntibhoj's & Pandu's curses, was getting impatient to get out of that predicament. Indra was worried about the fact that she'd be reborn as an asura wife, but Yamaraj came to her and assured her that time for her rebirth was fast approaching.

After returning to his kingdom, Vrushadeva took Jhanvi in and for the first time, the 2 of them alone enjoyed conjugal bliss. In a few months, Jhanvi had conceived, and Kunti's soul entered her womb. A year later, Jhanvi gave birth to a baby girl, and the sages told Vrushadeva about the curse Kunti had received, and the fact that she was in fact reborn as his daughter. Vrushadeva was no longer as hostile to her, and decided to name her Kunti itself, after both the kingdom and the dynasty.

Kunti grew up, and after a couple of years, Vedavati gave birth to the next daughter Marichana. Almost at the same time, Jhanvi gave birth to the first of Karna's grandsons. The day he was born, there were great omens of him becoming a great ruler and in Suryakund, all of Surya's family celebrated. In Kuntirajya, spring came early and the whole kingdom had a beautiful scenery to it - somewhat different from past years. All of Kuntirajya was excited at the birth of the presumed heir apparent of the kingdom. The naming ceremony of the prince was held, and he was named Kshatradeva, indicating that he would match the valor of Indra and the justness of Surya, and be an ideal ruler, rivaling even Yudisthir.

Two years later, Vedavati gave birth to the next of the Karnava princes. At his naming ceremony, the sages who saw him predicted that he'd be the very epitome of wisdom, intelligence, strategem and ingenuity in the family, and that he would set the future direction of the kingdom and make it the envy of all Aryavarta. Vedavati's first son was named Kshatraketu.

A year after that, Jhanvi gave birth to the next prince. He was predicted to be particularly gifted in terms of acquiring wealth, and would see to it that the kingdom and family would be prosperous at all times. He was named Lakshaketu.

Two years after Lakshaketu, Vedavati gave birth to the 4th prince, who was predicted to be an ardent follower of dharam, extremely pious, and as well versed in the shastras as Kshatraketu, and as righteous as Yudisthir. He would define the legal underpinnings of the changes that his brothers would bring in, and keep the family reined in on the path of dharma. As a result, he was named Dharmasena.

The next year, Jhanvi gave birth to her youngest son, who was predicted to be the greatest warrior of all time, equal to Krishna (sans his divine powers) and superior to either Karna or Arjun. For this son, Indra gave a gift to Surya again of a new set of golden kavachas & kundalas, which had the same qualities as the one Karna had, but enhanced - along w/ a promise that nobody would ever deprive him of it. Karna & his family were happy to hear that, and proud of this son. As a result, this baby was born w/ the golden armor & earrings. Therefore, the name chosen for him was Karnasena.

Finally, 2 years after Karnasena, the youngest of the Karnava princes was born to Vedavati. At his naming ceremony, the sages, noticing his signs, predicted that he'd have some of the qualities of each of his elder brothers: he'd be as all rounded as Kshatradeva, wise as Kshatraketu, wealth-smart as Lakshaketu, as just as Dharmasena and as valiant as Karnasena. This son's name would be Kshatrasena.

To recap, the children of Vrushadeva were, in order of their birth
  • Kunti
  • Kshatradeva
  • Kshatraketu
  • Marichana
  • Lakshaketu
  • Dharmasena
  • Karnasena
  • Kshatrasena
When the kids were young, each of them had favorites from their half-brothers, who they hardly regarded in that way. Kshatradeva's favorite was Kshatrasena, Kshatraketu's was Karnasena and Lakshaketu's was Dharmasena: each of the younger brothers returned the sentiments. The 2 sisters - Kunti and Marichana - were also very close. Vrushadeva's favorite son was Kshatrasena (unlike most kings who seemed to prefer their eldest), Jhanvi's was Dharmasena and Vedavati's was Karnasena.

When Kshatrasena was 2 years old, Vrushadeva handed to Jhanvi the responsibility of raising his daughters, and Vedavati the responsibility of raising his sons. Vedavati started teaching all the princes elementary archery, and to her surprise - and Vrushadeva's, all the 6 excelled in it. Karnasena was the best of the lot, followed closely by Kshatradeva and Kshatrasena. Kshatraketu was good as well, but had a tendency to see if the arrows could be improvised, as opposed to being good w/ anything, but he too excelled. Lakshasena & Dharmasena were still more skilled than average, but less than their brothers.

Vrushadeva & his family enjoyed a few years of bliss, b4 it was time for them to all go to a gurukul. Vrushadeva remembered that when he had served the Ganas @ Kailash, Kartikeya had offered him a boon and he had asked him to be a guru to the kids the Goddess Durga had blessed him w/. So he and his queens meditated on Kartikeya, and Skanda appeared b4 them. He offered his 6 sons to Kartikeya asking him to be their guru and take them, and Kartikeya accepted, and blessed him. Kartikeya then took the 6 princes w/ him to his abode.

Following that, Vrushadeva and his queens were overjoyed at getting the greatest guru they could have wanted. The next several years, while the princes grew up under Kartikeya's guidance, Vrushadeva ruled his kingdom happily.

In the meantime, other kingdoms too gained their sons. Parikshit was born to Abhimanyu & Uttara some time b/w Kshatradeva and Kshatraketu. Yudisthir's grandsons were born in b/w Lakshaketu and Dharmasena, Bhima's grandsons were born b/w Karnasena and Kshatrasena. All the other grandsons of Arjun, Nakul and Sahadev were younger to all of Karna's grandkids.

Similarly, the other daughters of Krishna too had their sons, giving Bali, Asanga and others worthy children. News of all this reached Vrushadeva & his wives, and they too were happy at the good fortunes of Krishna's daughters & sons-in-law.

Karnava princes in Kartikeya's gurukul

Kartikeya took the 6 princes home, where he set up a gurukul to give them all-round training. They were introduced to his consort Devasena, who took good care of them. The 6 princes lived like pupils in any gurukul, and became quickly accustomed to a life of hardship. They also became devout worshippers of Saraswati, Durga/Parvati & Mahadev.

All of them were trained in the Shastras, and excelled. Kshatraketu - the 2nd prince - was particularly brilliant and outshone all in studies, although Dharmasena matched him in the humanities. Since Karnasena avidly followed Kshatraketu, he too became almost as good as him in the sciences. However, Kshatradeva was the best balanced b/w being knowledgable, just & valorous, and Kshatrasena was almost his match. Lakshaketu was particularly good at the sciences of wealth, and outshone even Kshatraketu in that department.

In terms of valor, all 6 brothers excelled, and were as good archers as Krishna, and better than any of the reknowned warriors - Bheeshma, Drona, Ashwatthama, Arjun or Karna. Karnasena particularly stood out here, and also excelled in mace fighting. However, Kshatradeva was his equal in archery & mace fighting, but superior in all other weapons. In terms of ranking, Kshatradeva & Karnasena were on top in archery, followed by Kshatrasena, Kshatraketu, Lakshaketu & Dharmasena, in that order. Kshatraketu was the best mace warrior of the lot, tied w/ Kshatradeva, and Karnasena and Kshatrasena followed closely behind. In terms of sword and javelin fighting, Kshatradeva was ahead by a mile, followed by Lakshaketu, Dharmasena, Karnasena, Kshatraketu & Kshatrasena.

In Suryakund, Karna & his family watched all this, and were happy that the kids didn't have to go thru what he had gone thru, and also impressed by their progress. Purujit would also watch his future successors undergo that training, and he was impressed as well, and told Karna that he was confident that under Kshatradeva, the Kuntibhoj kingdom would attain unprecedented heights.

One day, Karnasena observed a kid practicing archery, and noticed that he was as good as him. On meeting him & inquiring, he found out that the kid was Kauralavya, the grandson of Ekalavya. Like his grandfather, he had a keen eye, and great w/ the bow. Karnasena told his guru Kartikeya about it, and Kartikeya welcomed Kauralavya and admitted him w/ the Karnavas. Soon, some other pupils joined as well. The Karnavas were on very good terms w/ all of them, and there was no vanity on anyone's part over their valor.

One day, Ganesh came to the gurukul and read to the disciples the entire Mahabharata which he had written for Vyasa. Everybody was impressed w/ the story, but it brought out mixed reactions. While the princes agreed that the Pandavas were in the right, they were largely upset at the injustice that had been meted out to Karna. Karnasena was particularly upset, and it took a great deal from Kshatraketu to pacify him. Karnasena now grew even more fond of Kauralavya, whose grandfather too he sympathized w/. Kshatradeva & Kshatraketu determined that the jurisprudence laws would be changed to allow for people of merit to be preferred over caste, and announced that Manu's smritis would not be implemented unedited, and even risked getting deprecated. Seeing this, Manu was worried, but Karna convinced him that laws do need to change over time. Following this, antipathies amongst 4 of the princes towards Krishna grew, due to his role in getting Karna demoralized & killed, and they decided to stop honoring Vishnu. Krishna sensed all this @ Dwarka, and realized that they would be the first wave of rulers to dominate the landscape following the start of Kalyug.

When the Karnava princes were 15 years old, they had mastered all Kartikeya taught them, and were ready to be released. Kshatradeva asked Kartikeya what they could offer him as gurudakshina. Kartikeya thought about it, and then Nandi told him that Banasura had invoked their help due to his war w/ Krishna.

As is well known, Banasura's daughter Usha had abducted & secretly married Anirudha, who Banasura then imprisoned. This resulted in Krishna & his armies invading Banasura's kingdom Shonitpur. Banasura was a 1000 armed disciple of Mahadev, who had been promised Mahadev's support since he had the habit of entertaining him by playing 500 instruments, to which Nataraja danced. However, due to the resulting vanity, Mahadev cursed him that he'd be defeated by someone his equal. Kartikeya too had been propriated by Banasura, and so he too had promised support.

Nandi then suggested to Kartikeya that since these princes had excelled in everything that Kartikeya had taught them, that he include them in his campaign. Kartikeya balked, given that they were Krishna's grandsons as well, not just Karna's. On hearing this, Kshatraketu excused himself and told the guru that while that was true, Krishna was guilty of doing injustice to Karna, so he too didn't deserve blind loyalty. Kshatradeva told Kartikeya that if he would have considered including them had they not been Krishna's grandsons, to include them here as well. Kartikeya agreed.

Banasura war

So Shiva & the Ganas, along w/ Kartikeya and the Karnava princes, arrived @ Shonitpur, just as Krishna & his armies arrived there as well. Banasura came out w/ ihs army to confront them. Shiva told Krishna that he had promised Banasura his protection, and Krishna accepted that he'd have to battle him. Kartikeya confronted Pradhyumna and Banasura himself confronted Satyaki. The Karnava princes moved forward and confronted the rest of Krishna's army.

In the heavens, everybody gathered to witness this battle b/w Shiva & Krishna. Suryadev & his family too watched. Everybody's attention was more towards Shiva vs Krishna.

A huge battle ensued that caused tremors on earth, due to both Krishna's battle w/ Shiva & Pradhyumna's battle w/ Kartikeya. Both those battles were deadlocked, and Banasura was infuriated. He left Satyaki and moved on to Krishna. Satyaki tried to stop him, but at this point, Lakshaketu arrived & started battling him so intensively that Satyaki was forced to stop paying any attention to Banasura. In Suryakund, everybody noticed it, and was impressed. In the meantime, seeing Kartikeya deadlocked, Banasura's son Asurasura intervened and took over in battling Pradhyumna. Kartikeya then moved his attention towards Samba.

Pradhyumna managed to match the prowess of Asurasura, and started to threaten the asura prince. He broke Asurasura's bow and destroyed a few other astras Asurasura hurled @ him. He was close to killing Asurasura, when Kshatradeva intercepted a Yamastra that Pradhyumna hurled @ Asurasura w/ a Brahmastra, allowing a disarmed Asurasura to withdraw from battle. Pradhyumna was furious and seeing Kshatradeva, offered him the option of leaving. However, Kshatradeva declined, and offered Pradhyumna instead the option of either leaving or surrendering, infuriating Pradhyumna. A furious battle then ensued.

Balarama started proceeding against Banasura, who was headed towards Krishna, but Kshatraketu came in his way. Balarama recognized him as his grandnephew and warned him to stop trying to allow Banasura from taking over from Shiva, but Kshatratetu told him that it was up to every warrior to pick his own adversaries, and Balarama was his. Kshatraketu successfully prevented nailed Balarama's chariot to the ground w/ his arrows and showered him w/ those, and Balarama was now totally focussed on trying to defeat Kshatraketu.

Banasura's battle w/ Krishna had in the meantime started, and Banasura started getting a battering. One by one, like Asurasura, his weapons too were destroyed, and Krishna was about to start his assault on him, but Karnasena intercepted an arrow that Krishna sent @ Banasura. Krishna turned to him, smiled and told him that he'd be happy to entertain him w/ battle, except that this battle was being fought to liberate Karnasena's cousin Anirudha from the city. Karnasena told him that as long as he was alive, Krishna would be unable to kill Banasura. Krishna tried to tell him that he was his grandson, and to accept a future battle, but Karnasena reminded Krishna of the lifelong injustice done to his grandfather Karna, and told him that defeating Krishna was his objective. Krishna accepted that and a battle began.

Krishna fired a few divine weapons against Karnasena, but thanks to his kavacha, those weapons barely scathed him. Even the Brahmastra was powerless against him. Krishna then drew his Narayanastra against him, and at that point, Kshatrasena quickly instructed all the Gana and Asuras to bow b4 it. As a result, the astra focussed itself on Karnasena, who was protected from that weapon as well.

Krishna then realized that he'd be unable to defeat his grandson, and so raised his discus and fired it @ Banasura, chopping off all but 4 of his arms. Karnasena was furious and fired some more arrows @ Krishna, wounding him. At this point, Shiva stopped the war, telling Krishna that Banasura was under his protection, and to stop trying to kill him. He also told Karnasena that Krishna was destined to live about 4 more years, and so to accept a token victory and end the battle. Kshatradeva, Kshatraketu and others also stopped battling Balarama, Satyaki and others.

In Suryakund, Karna was overjoyed @ the performance in this battle by his children, and so was everybody else - Suryadev to Satyasena. Karna recognized that even he could never have achieved even parity w/ Krishna, but since this was both their grandchildren, they managed it

Following this, Banasura ordered Anirudha & Usha fetched, and gave them a grand wedding, which he requested the Ganas & Karnavas to attend. He later called Kshatradeva & his brothers and offered them anything they wanted. Kshatradeva told him that father desired a matrimonial alliance w/ the asuras, and wished to give his eldest sister Kunti in marriage to an asura prince. He therefore asked that Banasura send Asurasura over to Kuntipuri in future to marry her. Banasura was overjoyed @ the prospects of an alliance w/ the Karnavas & agreed.

Kartikeya then told the 6 princes that they had successfully paid their Gurudakshina by helping him in battle, and blessed them that they'd be successful both in helping their father rule, as well as ruling after him. The princes were happy, and thanked him. Kartikeya told them that they had completed their courses under him, and were free to return to their parents.

Anirudha's & Usha's wedding was held w/ great pomp & ceremony. Following that, Krishna took them and the rest of the Yadavas home. He offered Kshatradeva to take him home, but Kshatradeva told him that they had no interest in meeting the Kauravas or the Pandavas, which Krishna was likely to do on his return, and besides, they still didn't consider him an ally. Krishna was disappointed, but Kartikeya told him that since the Karnavas were not indulging in any adharma, Krishna could do nothing against them.

Banasura then asked Asurasura to take the Karnava princes back home and accompany them, but Kartikeya told them that he had to personally return them to Vrushadeva. A few days b4 Shivaratri, Kartikeya took the 6 princes and appeared b4 Vrushadeva @ Kuntipura, and narrated him everything. Vrushadeva was overjoyed and thanked Kartikeya, and told him that everything he ever wanted from Mahadev, Durga and others was achieved. Kartikeya also told him that Kunti would marry Asurasura, as a result of the way his sons had defended both him & Banasura. Kartikeya then blessed them all & left.

The next day, Vrushadeva announced to his kingdom the arrival of the 6 princes, and huge celebrations were held throughout Kuntirajya - both to celebrate the return of the princes, as well as their victories in battle. Kunti & Marichana had the palace decorated and held celebrations for their brothers. The kingdom, which had been desolate 32 years ago following the war, was at the peak of its happiness w/ the return of its 6 princes. A few days of celebrations were held, and following that, on the advise of others in his court, Vrushadeva decided to hold a tournament in which each of his sons would display their fighting skills. All of Kuntipura poured into the city for the occasion.

Durvasa's visit to Kuntipura

A few years b4 the gurukul of the Karnava princes was completed, Rishi Durvasa made a second visit to Kuntipura. Like Kuntibhoj b4 him, Vrushadeva welcomed him and assigned Marichana to cater to his comforts in the palace. Like the original queen Kunti b4 her, Marichana took good care of Rishi Durvasa and he stayed there for a while.

At the end of his visit, b4 leaving Durvasa told Marichana that he was pleased w/ her and offered her a boon. In fact, he offered her the same boon of invoking devas like he had given her great grandmother. However, this time, Marichana perked up and stopped him.

M: Forgive me, oh sage, but while it was a pleasure serving you, this is one gift I can't accept

D: Why not?

M: The last time you gave this to my great grandmother, it resulted in her having to go thru a lifetime of sorrow - having to actually use this and be widowed. And 3 of her sons killed 5 of her grandsons. That's the last thing I want for myself, so I absolutely can't accept that

D: But wasn't that her fault - she doubted whether I had actually given her something useful, and experimented, and that's how Karna was born. And really, was that to the detriment of the earth? Look at your family - it's that son who's enabled Maharaj Kuntibhoj's dynasty to continue

M: However, I do not want to make such contributions. I don't want Kshetrajya sons (born out of niyoga) - I want Aurasa sons (sons naturally born out of conjugal acts b/w spouses). So please do not give me any such boons

Now, Durvasa got furious and cursed her. He told her, "I was going to give you something that would make your name as immortal as your great grandmother, but you insulted that gift that I gave her. So I curse you - like Amba, you will never get a husband"

Hearing this, Vrushadeva, Jhanvi, Vedavati & Kunti rushed in & fell @ Durvasa's feet. They begged him to relent, but he refused. Then Mahadev appeared there w/ Anusuya & Atri and ordered Durvasa to relent, or else be sentenced to hell. So Durvasa relented.

D: Having cursed Marichana, I can't take it back, but I can dilute it. She will find a husband, but not b4 each of her brothers are married. Since she didn't accept my original gift, she will get the Aurasa sons that she wanted. But she'll have to wait until Kshatrasena too gets married - only then will she find any man who is willing to marry her.

Vrushadeva and the rest of the family were relieved to hear this, and Durvasa took his leave and headed to Dwarka. On the way, he was joined by Vishwamitra, Kanva and a few other rishis. While they were there, the Yadavas played a trick on them by bringing Krishna's son Samba dressed as a woman, and the rishis cursed them that Samba would give birth to a mace that would destroy them all. Following that, the events of Mausala Parva happened, where Samba's mace was grounded and thrown in the sea, and got washed ashore @ Prabhasha. In Dwarka, Ugrasena, Krishna & Balarama passed strict prohibition rules and tightened control on everything that citizens could do.

Vrushadeva then decided w/ Jhanvi & Vedavati that after Kunti's marriage, they'd tell their sons this news and have them attend various swayamvaras on their own & marry early, so that Marichana's marriage to the Nagas didn't get much delayed.

A few months after these incidents, Vrushadeva allowed Jhanvi, Vedavati and their daughters to visit Dwarka. Devaki, Rukmini, Jambavati & Bhadra were glad to see them, and Jhanvi was happy to meet Krishna again. However, they noticed that a lot had changed in Dwarka, and that the behavior of people who they had previously grown up w/ had changed for the worse. Vedavati was shocked and although Jhanvi tried to comfort her, it wasn't much use. The last straw came when one day, a heavily drunken Samba strode into the rooms of Vedavati in Jhanvi's presence and insulted Vrushadeva, referring to him as a suta pautra. Vedavati immediately told Jhanvi that she wasn't staying there any more, and that she'd take their daughters and leave, even if Jhanvi didn't want to come. She also swore that one of her 6 sons would kill Samba for this insult. Jambavati came there and scolded Samba, and told Jhanvi & Vedavati that she supported their decision to leave, and thanked them for coming. She also told them that chances were that it was probably their last meeting in Dwarka 😭 and blessed that they should be happier in Kuntipura. That very day, Jhanvi, Vedavati, Kunti and Marichana took the blessings of all the elders - Ugrasena, Vasudeva, Devaki, Balarama, Rohini, Krishna, Rukmini, Jambavati, Bhadra and the other 5 queens. They then returned to Kuntipura.

Returning to Kuntipura, Vedavati narrated to Vrushadeva what had happened, and Jhanvi apologized to him and promised him that from now on, her first loyalty would be to him and not to Dwarka any more. She also apologized for not respecting Vrushadeva's sentiments in the past regarding Krishna. Vrushadeva comforted her and asked them to get ready, as the gurukul of their sons was coming to a close.

Following the return of the princes to Kuntipura, the entire kingdom gathered in the fairgrounds of the capital to witness the martial abilities of the 6 princes. In Suryakund, Karna too was excited that a tournament dedicated to just his grandsons was taking place, so that there was no way he could lose. His wives & sons joined him and started cheering for different grandsons/nephews of theirs. It was a festive atmosphere in both Kuntipura & Suryakund

Karnava princes make their mark

The entire kingdom of Kuntirajya was excited about the return of their triumphant princes, and eager to see the contest b/w them. In Suryakund too, Karna's family and indeed, Suryadev & others watched the proceedings, while Kartikeya & his family too watched it from above.

There were a lot of suggestions about who would be the combatants. Vrushadeva thought about it some, and on the day of the tournament, decided to make it as even as possible by making it b/w 2 sons of each of his queens, and 1 b/w the remaining sons. To that end, he announced the following:
  • Lakshaketu vs Dharmasena
  • Kshatraketu vs Kshatrasena
  • Kshatradeva vs Karnasena
The entire kingdom was excited to hear the matchups, and started watching. Lakshaketu & Dharmasena came to the podium and took the blessings of the king, the 2 queens and were greeted by their sisters. They then took their respective positions and battle started.

Both princes took up their bows and demonstrated their talents - invoking rain, fire, winds, storms, calmness - just like their grandfather several years ago @ Hastinapur. The archery battle b/w them then started. Both were evenly matched and the battle went on for a while. Then both broke each other's bows, then fought w/ swords, broke them and then ended up w/ javelins. Finally, Dharmasena tired earlier and Lakshaketu knocked his javelin off his hand and pointed it @ him. He had won.

The next battle was b/w Kshatraketu & Kshatrasena. Both replicated the talents of their brothers w/ the bow, and then started. Each destroyed w/ their arrows the other's swords & javelins, and finally the bows themselves. Then they took up their maces and attacked each other. The clash of the maces was wonderful, and surpassed the battle b/w Bhima & Duryodhan. Finally, Kshatrasena managed to strike Kshatraketu in his hand and knock off his mace. The youngest of Vedavati's sons had triumphed over her eldest.

Then came the most anticipated battle - that of the presumed future yuvraj Kshatradeva and the kavacha-kundala clad Karnasena. This one was easily the most flamboyant. The 2 displayed the same talents w/ the bow, and then attacked each other. Both were equally matched & covered their weapons. However, once both had destroyed each other's weapons, Kshatradeva had the clear edge. He took a mace and broke Karnasena's sword & javelin, and used the momentum to knock his mace out of his hand. As a result, he was victorious.

Everybody was overjoyed to see all this, and heaped lavish praise on all the 6 princes. Even in Suryakund, Karna was pleased that each of his grandsons had the opportunity to display their abilities, and covered themselves w/ glory. Following that, Vrushadeva, Jhanvi, Vedavati, Kunti & Marichana too were full of appreciation for their displays, and they had a feast. The next day, the princes were introduced in court, where Vrushadeva announced that they would be assigned responsibilities.

Kshatradeva was declared the governor of the capital Kuntipura, and in charge of all the civil affairs in the capital, so that Vrushadeva could focus on the rest of the kingdom.

Kshatraketu was declared the chief policymaker of the kingdom, a role assisting the prime minister, and would be a key decision maker in all aspects of the government. He would also oversee all other aspects of government.

Lakshaketu was declared the assistant to the treasurer, and the principal economic decision maker - all decisions regarding spending, taxation, trade, production that the government was involved in would have to go through him.

Dharmasena was declared the chief administrator of justice - his role would be to review all laws, revise them as and when necessary and get approval from the king and the ministers, and also implement new laws regarding other realms of government, be it the treasury, army, health or anything else.

Karnasena was declared the commander of the army, and chief advisor to the defense minister. He was also put in charge of relationships w/ other kingdoms, as well as trade, the latter for which he had to serve Lakshaketu. Things like foreign affairs & trade were supposed to preoccupy him when Kuntirajya wasn't at war w/ other kingdoms.

Finally, Kshatrasena was declared the chief implementor of all government policies. He was to serve as a deputy to each of his brothers, starting w/ Kshatraketu. Also, being closest to Kshatradeva, he'd also brief him about all the affairs in all the government, so that Kshatradeva was as informed as Vrushadeva and capable of acting in his place.

Queens Jhanvi continued to be in charge of the health & well being of the citizens, and Kshatradeva was assigned to support her. Kshatraketu was similarly assigned to support his mother on education.

After a few months, Karnasena, w/ approval of the king, invaded Kambhoja, which had been raiding them from the north, and conquered it, along w/ the old kingdom of Bahlika. Following that, Vrushadeva, Kshatradeva, Kshatraketu and others held a meeting and it was decided to redraw the borders of the kingdom in a circular fashion. They had meetings w/ their neighbors, and agreed to trade parts of land, and let the kingdom be arranged accordingly. Following that, Kshatraketu gave Vrushadeva the proposal of leaving Kuntipura as the major hub of activity in the kingdom, but giving it a new capital at the center of the redrawn kingdom, where the royalty & government only would move. The kingdom would be divided along sectors b/w the 6 brothers, so that each would get an idea about governing, in case any had to ultimately become king. Vrushadeva & Kshatradeva approved the plan, as did Jhanvi & Vedavati.

The 6 princes then went to the center of the kingdom, where Kshatraketu had a plan already drawn out for a new city. It had a few palaces, and several government buildings where the subjects could get their affairs sorted out. It had all the amenities of a city, and a few innovations from Kshatradeva himself mainly, as well as his brothers. Karnasena took the lead in helping set up the structure of several buildings w/ his arrows, and his brothers also helped. In a few months, a new city was completed. Vrushadeva decided to name the city Suryaprastha, and inaugurated it. A number of roads & landmarks were built, named after the previous Kuntibhoj dynasty - Kuntibhoj, Purujit and their families. In Suryakund, Kuntibhoj enjoyed seeing that, but wished that Karna & his family too be memorialized. One day, he appeared b4 the princes in a dream and asked them to name roads & monuments after others in the family - Vrishasena, Prasena, Chitrasena, Satyasena and so on. This too was added to the city, and it soon rivaled Indraprastha in beauty & function.

Following that, Vrushadeva divided the kingdom into 6 sectors, w/ all the capitals @ the periphery of Kuntipura. They were named after 6 of Karna's sons. Kshatradeva got his province in the North East of the country, Karnasena got the sector just West of his, while Lakshaketu got his sector right next to his, in the East. Dharmasena got the sector in the South East, which included the old capital Kuntipura, as well as the spot where Kunti's & Karna's statues were. Kshatrasena got his sector right next to Karnasena's, to the West of the kingdom bordering Kekaya/Gandhara, while Kshatraketu got the remaining sector in the South, bordering Madra and b/w Karnasena's and Dharmasena's.

One day, on a hunting expedition w/ the king, Karnasena noticed that one of his prey had been struck by someone else's arrow. Approaching it, he found out that it was Kauralavya's. Kauralavya arrived there and apologized to Vrushadeva and Karnasena introduced the 2. Vrushadeva was thrilled to see Ekalavya's grandson, and told him how much he admired his late grandfather. He offered shelter to Ekalavya's family in the kingdom, and invited Karnalavya to join his army as the senapati, so that Karnasena could concentrate on foreign affairs & trade. Kauralavya welcomed the offer and brought his family in, and they settled in Suryaprastha.

After all that, it was decided to hold a swayamvara for Kunti among asuras. Invitations were sent to asura kingdoms far & wide - from Banasura to Vajranam, and other asuras far and wide. Hidimbi was also invited as a guest, but since she was related to the Karnavas via her mother in law Kunti, she would have co-hosting responsibilities. She arrived in Suryaprastha w/ her grandsons Anjanparva & Meghavarma, and they set about arranging a contest among the rakshashas for the swayamvara.

Kunti's swayamvara

Hidimbi arrived @ Suryaprastha and plans started for a swayamvara that asuras would be comfortable w/. Karnasena and Kauralavya prepared the citizens and convinced them that this time, the asuras wouldn't be doing any damage but were just here to participate in the swayamvara. In the meantime, Hidimbi joined Vedavati and the 2 of them started making plans for the competition.

Hidimba proposed that the competition have 3 contests b/w the participants. One would be an eating competition, where endless supplies of food would be provided to the contestants, and the one who got full first would be the loser 😆 A second would be a duel b/w the contestants - asura rules, where each asura was free to do anything within the fairgrounds. From these 2, the winners of all the contests would be chosen, and Kunti could then select her groom from the surviving contestants.

In the meantime, @ Shonitpur, Asurasura did a number of pujas propriating Shiva, and was blessed that he'd be the one to win the swayamvara. Banasura was happy to hear that, and both set off for Suryaprastha.

After a few weeks, asuras started pouring into Suryaprastha, eager to compete against each other for the hand of the beautiful Arya princess Kunti. Among them was Vajradatta, son of Bhagadatta, Asurasura, the son of Banasura, Alambaka, son of Alambusha, Hidimbaka, son of Kirmira and several others.

On the day of the contest, Karnasena sent an arrow into the skies that got down endless amounts of food from Kubera, which was then provided to all the contestants. A number of them got eliminated here, including Vajradatta. The rounds then went to the duel round, where Asurasura was easily the most powerful asura left standing. He defeated among others Alambaka and Hidimbaka. At the end of all the duels, only 16 asuras were left standing.

The 16 were then taken to the Swayamvara hall, where Kunti finally got to select her groom. She went around and garlanded Asurasura. Everybody cheered, and Banasura, who too was attending the swayamvara, was ecstatic.

Following that, Kunti & Asurasura were married w/ great pomp & ceremony. Vrushadeva & Banasura held joint pujas of Shiva to propriate him so that the couple would remain blessed. The Karnava princes & Marichana, as well as Jhanvi & Vedavati, bade farewell to Kunti, as she went on her bidai. A few weeks later, a triumphant Asurasura entered Shonitpur along w/ Kunti, Banasura and the rest of them.

Following this, Banasura announced that Asurasura would be made his yuvraj and Kunti his yuvrani. The 2 were crowned there, amidst great celebrations.

Up in Suryakund, Pandu & Kuntibhoj both looked happy that Kunti was now fulfilling Vrushadeva's wishes of bridging the gaps b/w Aryans & Asuras.

The dispute over Sindhu

Following the marriage of Kunti, things settled down in Kuntirajya. Vrushadeva decided to expand trade w/ neighboring kingdoms, and Karnasena & Kshatrasena approached the various neighbors to work out deals w/ them all. Since the Pandavas were one of the major trading kingdoms, Vrushadeva decided that it was important to put aside any differences on a national level and include them in it as well. With that in mind, Dharmasena was sent over as an envoy to Hastinapur. Yudisthir welcomed him, and Dharmasena delivered him the various trade agreements, which happened to be win-win deals for both Hastinapur and Kuntirajya. The Pandavas were happy that Vrushadeva was willing to separate family differences from the affairs of state, and told Dharmasena so in so many words. Dharmasena agreed, and told them that his father and family would definitely appreciate the Pandavas respecting their differences on a family level while being cordial @ a state level.

After some time, in Indraprastha, a tournament was held to welcome the returning Pandava princes from their gurukul - Parikshit, Draupadi's grandsons, and other grandsons of the Pandavas. This tournament was a combined Pandava-Yadava tournament - aside from Parikshit & his brothers, Anirudha & his brothers too were there. The whole of the kingdom gathered there to watch the princes. From the Pandavas, Yudisthir & his brothers, Draupadi, Subhadra, Uloopi, Valandhara, Chitrangada, Karenamati & other queens, Abhimanyu, Uttara, his brothers & wives were all present. From the Yadavas, Balarama, Revathi, Krishna, Rukmini, Satyabhama, Pradhyumna, Bhanu and others were there as well.

The tournament started and all the princes from Indraprastha & Dwarka impressed w/ their feats. After the tournament, Krishna suggested that Dharmasena too come in and participate, but the Karnava prince declined, reminding him about the humiliation that his grandfather had gone thru, and pointing out that it was improper of him to accept an honor that wasn't there for his grandfather. Krishna then invited him to participate as his grandson, but Dharmasena refused, stating that he was neither a Pandava nor a Yadava. Some of the princes challenged him, but Dharmasena pointed out to them that the scope of anything that happened that day in Indraprastha was limited to the Pandava & Yadava families, neither of which he was a part. With these words, he left Indraprastha.

Back @ Suryaprastha, news of Dharmasena declining participation had reached Vrushadeva, and he was pleased w/ him. So were all the princes. Dharmasena then tried to persuade his father that while they were on the right track reconciling w/ the Pandavas on a state level, they should try & forgive on a personal family level as well. Vrushadeva explained to him that that would happen in 4 years after Krishna & the Pandavas were gone: they had nothing against Abhimanyu or Pradhyumna or their brothers, but the bad blood b/w Arjun, Nakul or Draupadi against Karna wasn't something that could be resolved in the lifetimes of the Hastinapur elders. Dharmasena accepted. Kshatraketu also told Dharmasena that he did the right thing by not contesting, since it would have resulted in them getting to know their skills & tactics, which were important to keep secret in case any future confrontation arose.

In the meantime, in Kekaya, Vedavati's cousin had become the king there. With the help of Vrushadeva, he invaded Sindhu and toppled the Saindava kingdom, easily defeating the Saindava resistance, which even Arjun had found to be a handful. On Vrushadeva's suggestion, he conquered and annexed Sindhu, and now had an empire stretching from Gandhara to Sindhu, one that challenged Hastinapur in size.

Duhsala fled w/ her grandson to Hastinapur, and told Yudisthir about her predicament. Arjun advised Yudisthir that while it wouldn't be difficult to get Kekaya to release Sindhu by themselves, it would be complicated if Vrushadeva was instigating them to do the annexing. Yudisthir remembered Vrushadeva's promise that his uncles kingdom wouldn't go to war against him, and decided to send an envoy to Suryaprastha to ask Vrushadeva not to encourage Kekaya to keep Sindhu, and also not to take Kekaya's side if a war broke out.

Karnasena's spies informed him about it, and so the 6 brothers had a meeting w/ Vrushadeva, Jhanvi & Vedavati. Vrushadeva told them that their kingdom indeed couldn't go to war w/ the Pandavas, due to Kuntibhoj's prior agreements, which they'd honor. However, they weren't obligated to take the Pandava side against any kingdom that had fought alongside them in the war. Under this condition, Kekaya was an ally, while Sindhu was an enemy.

Vrushadeva told his sons that while he couldn't go to war against the Pandavas, his sons, being cousins of the Kekaya ruler, could visit him on family reasons and fight for him under the Kekaya flag. Karnasena loved that idea, and so did Kshatradeva, Kshatraketu and Kshatrasena. Dharmasena objected, saying that it violated the spirit of their agreement, but Vrushadeva overruled him, saying that his agreement said nothing about sons doing their uncles or in-laws any favors. He then commanded his 6 sons to go to Kekaya and tell their cousin that they'd fight the Pandavas under his flag, if the Pandavas insisted on trying to undo the conquest of Sindhu. Kshatradeva and his 5 brothers accordingly left for Kekaya b4 Yudisthir's messenger entered Kuntirajya.

Yudisthir thought about who to send as an envoy. Since Arjun and Nakul were hated, due to their roles in killing Vrishasena and Satyasena, it was decided not to send them. Instead, it was decided to send Bhima as the envoy to Kuntirajya.

Vrushadeva welcomed Bhima @ Kuntipura, where the shrine to the original Kunti and Karna existed, and hosted him there. Bhima told him that Yudisthir desired his alliance against Kekaya. Vrushadeva reminded him that since Kekaya was their ally during the war and Sindhu was their enemy, what he was doing was perfectly proper as far as their alliance went. He also told him that his kingdom wouldn't take sides if a war happened b/w any 2 Pandava allies in the Kurukshetra war. Bhima accepted that neutrality of his uncle's kingdom, and decided to return to Hastinapur.

Accordingly, the Pandavas sent Satsoma as an envoy to Kekaya, but the ruler of Kekaya, while welcoming him, reminded him that Sindhu was an enemy, and that he didn't accept Yudisthir's decision on when enmity ends. Satsoma warned him that that could be interpreted as an act of war by the Pandavas. The Kekaya ruler told him that the Pandavas were jealous that the Kekaya empire had outgrown the Pandava empire of Indraprastha, Hastinapur and adjoining territories, and to go ahead and come w/ his army, if that's what his king wished. Kshatradeva & his brothers reached Kekaya after Satsoma left.

Following this, Krishna came to Hastinapur and told them that while Vrushadeva's kingdom was neutral, his sons weren't, and that they'd need their entire forces to take on these 6 brothers. The Pandavas were incredulous, but accepted his advice. Krishna told them that this time, he and his sons would also fight as combatants alongside the Pandavas against his grandsons. He told them that all arrangements would be needed. So the Pandavas left Abhimanyu in charge of Indraprastha and Prativindya in charge of Hastinapur, and left w/ Yudisthir heading the army. From the Yadava side, Krishna, Balarama, Pradhyumna, Samba, Bhanu and others also joined. Soon, Kekaya had a coalition army on its Eastern borders, led by Krishna. The grandsons of the Pandavas also joined, as did Anirudha and his brothers.

In the meantime, Vrushadeva sent Vedavati to Martikavat asking Charumati to get as many of their in-laws out of the war, despite Krishna's participation. Bali agreed, and except for Asanga, most of the daughters of Krishna's kingdoms agreed to Vedavati's appeal to be neutral.

In the meantime, the Kekaya ruler noted the gathering of a coalition on his borders. Kshatradeva assured him that w/ their support, he was not going to lose. His cousin asked him who should head the Kekaya army that would be opposed by the likes of Krishna, Arjun, Balarama, Bhima, Pradhyumna, Samba, Satyaki & Yudisthir? Kshatradeva suggested making Karnasena the commander of their army and moving into the battlefield.

Accordingly, the 2 armies came together on the battlefield and confronted each other. How would this war turn out?

Karna avenged

The 2 armies met each other @ Kamyaka, on the frontiers of Kekaya. Kekaya's ruler headed his army, flanked by the Karnava brothers. On the Pandava side, Yudisthir came in front & center, flanked by Krishna and Arjun, Balarama & Bhima, Pradhyumna & Satyaki. Kripacharya too came as a part of this invading army.

Yudisthir, addressing the ruler of Kekaya, reminded him of how they had been allies very recently, and begged him not to make this an enmity. Kshatradeva, addressing him, told him that Yudisthir was a ruler who treated his enemies better than his friends, and was therefore undeserving of such support. He reminded him about how he restrained his brothers from rescuing his wife, and yet sent the same brothers to rescue his enemies against the Gandharvas. He told Yudisthir that such base men were worthless as friends.

Krishna intervened and asked the Karnava princes in what capacity they were fighting on Kekaya's side? He reminded them that their grandfather too had taken an obdurate stance against the Pandavas, and had paid for it. Kshatradeva told him that while Krishna may well be their matamaha, fact remained that he was a part of Kunti's evil plot to deprive Karna of his rightful place alongside the Pandavas, while at the same time, Kunti approached him like a beggar, and Krishna just b4 the war to undermine him. However, today, the Karnava princes were not fighting on the side of adharm, but if anyone was, it was Yudisthir & Krishna who were betraying their long friendship.

Kshatraketu then joined in and reminded Krishna that dharam and justice were both alien to him, since all he had been interested in was a holocaust to lighten the earth's burden, and had no compunctions in helping their grandfather Karna's identity known @ the right time, so that he wasn't tied to adharm. He reminded Krishna of all the evils his own people had been doing pretty recently, and that on that criteria, their time too was coming to an end. He pointed out that just as Yudisthir was putting his relationship w/ Queen Duhsala above the traditional alliances he had w/ those who had laid down their lives for him @ Kurukshetra, the Karnava princes were fighting not under the Kuntirajya flag, but under the Kekaya flag, since their ruler was their uncle, and that their mothers had married their father in that kingdom. He told them that Kekaya had become a large kingdom on its own merits, gaining Gandhara w/ the help of their father, and conquering Sindhu on their own. He told Yudisthir to send Duhsala & her family to Anga for shelter, and let them remove an irritant on their borders.

Yudisthir grew furious and warned of dire consequences. All the Kekaya princes laughed, and reminded him how he had to be protected by a child to prevent being captured. Kekaya's ruler challenged him to a straightforward duel, if he was a Kshatriya. Hearing this, Arjun exploded, but at this point, Kshatrasena warned him that his invincibility was gone, since he had neither Krishna for a charioteer, nor Hanuman on his flag. 😆 He reminded Arjun of how he had attacked Bhurishrava & Vrishasena while they were fighting others, but that today, Arjun wouldn't be allowed to intervene in anyone else's fight. Arjun tried to persuade him on how they respected his grandfather Karna, and that was met by derisive jeers from Kshatraketu, who told him that the only reason his mother Kunti was spared was due to the misplaced generousity of their mother Jhanvi. He reminded Arjun of how he hadn't taken the war seriously until Abhimanyu had been killed, and this allegation infuriated Arjun. Finally, Arjun had enough and launched an arrow, which was quickly shattered by Kshatrasena.

The battle then started. The ruler of Kekaya took on Yudisthir, while Dharmasena took on Kripa. Karnasena took on Krishna, Kshatradeva on Balarama and Kshatraketu on Bhima. Lakshaketu took on Pradhyumna and Kshatrasena on Arjun. Other than that, the 2 armies collided.

Yudisthir and the ruler of Kekaya were well matched, while Dharmasena quickly wounded and disarmed Kripa, forcing him to flee. Yudisthir in the meantime wounded the ruler of Kekaya, and Dharmasena quickly relieved him and took on Yudisthir. The two of them took their lances and a fierce duel started b/w them.

Kshatradeva took on Balarama. Balarama took out his plow, but Kshatradeva, w/ his arrows, managed to nail it to the ground. Balarama then took up his bow & arrows and a fierce battle commenced. Kshatradeva had the edge, and managed to destroy Balarama's other weapons, like sword, while knocking his mace way out of his chariot. Finally, he wounded Balarama & broke his bow, and then saluted him. Balarama was pleased w/ him & blessed him.

Kshatraketu took on Bhima. Knowing that Bhima's strength & mace were formidable, he first knocked his mace out of his chariot, and destroyed his other weapons. The two then fought a fierce battle, but Kshatraketu, using some special arrows of his, had Bhima covered in oil, which completely reduced his ability to attack. He then fired more arrows & wounded him, and then saluted him. Bhima was impressed.

Lakshaketu attacked Pradhyumna, and wounded him very quickly. Pradhyumna resorted to his mayavi tricks, but Lakshaketu destroyed his chariot and using his divyastras, exposed him. He then fired a Naag paksh @ him, binding him and totally disabling him. He then attacked Pradhyumna's brothers starting w/ Charudeshna, then moved on to Bhanu and other sons of Krishna by his various queens, locking them all in battle. He also attacked the other Pandava princes fighting, and had them covered w/ arrows. In the meantime, Karnasena confronted Samba, and w/ a sharp arrow, took out his head. Krishna was infuriated and his attack on him intensified.

Kshatrasena took on Arjun. While not as accurate, he had a speed advantage over him, and quickly covered Arjun in arrows. He then destroyed Arjun's other weapons - sword, lance and so on, and knocked off his mace. He then sent an arrow at his chariot wheel, shattering it, and another arrow blew up the chariot, and sent Arjun flying high. Arjun landed on the ground and started another attack, but now, Kshatrasena had a clear advantage over him. With one well aimed arrow, he severed Arjun's right thumb, and w/ another arrow, severed the other 4 fingers of his left hand. Arjun, though in pain, changed hands to fire, but this had slowed him down even further. Kshatrasena then fired an arrow that pinned the Gandhiva to Arjun's chariot post, and his hand w/ it. He then reminded Arjun of how Ekalavya had to lose his thumb, and asked him how it felt?

Seeing Arjun having lost, Nakul now intervened. Kshatrasena laughed @ him, and reminded him that unlike his uncle Vrishasena, who Arjun attacked from behind, there'd be none to do that today. Sahadev tried doing that, but Lakshaketu, who was battling an open field, intercepted his arrow. He then fired a well aimed arrow that severed Sahadev's left hand. Nakul was shocked, but continued fighting. Kshatrasena then fired another arrow @ Nakul and severed his right hand. Nakul raised his sword w/ his left hand, but Kshatrasena broke that w/ his arrow. Nakul then tried hurling some lances, but Kshatrasena broke all of them. He then fired arrows @ Nakul, wounding him, and then spared him. Sahadev took over from Nakul, and he too was soon injured.

Krishna was fighting Karnasena. The two of them kept it to physical weapons, since Krishna knew that Karnasena's armor would repel any divine weapons. Both were well matched & fought for a while, even as the other warriors on the Pandava-Yadava coalition were getting trounced. Finally, both exhausted their physical weapons. By this time, all his 5 brothers, as well as the ruler of Kekaya, had defeated their enemies and were back.

Krishna then decided to resort to divine weapons. He sent his sudarshan @ Karnasena, but due to his kavach, the discus just circumbulated him & left. Karnasena sent divine weapons to block his Koumadaki, and then a voice from the heavens called for the battle to stop. Krishna stopped the assault.

Seeing them stop, Kshatradeva & the Kekaya ruler too announced an end to the battle. Kshatradeva and the Kekaya ruler then conferred a bit, and then told Yudisthir & Krishna that while they were annexing the Sindhu country, they'd give a city on the coast right next to the Kutch coast, named Jayadravya, which would border both Sindhu, as well as Saubya. Duhsala & her grandson could return there & they'd be free to trade w/ anybody, and wouldn't be locked in by just 1 kingdom. Yudisthir thanked them, and told them that he accepted their victory. Despite being badly wounded, Arjun, Nakul & Sahadev congratulated Kshatrasena on his victory, and told him that his grandfather & uncles would be proud of them. Krishna was impressed and blessed them, and told them that Karna would be proud of them.

In Suryakund, Karna was indeed watching this, and wept w/ joy on seeing the achievement of his grandsons. He was also happy that they won w/o being crippled by adharm. He announced that from that day, any residual resentment he had towards Kunti or the Pandavas was over. He hoped that his grandsons too would be on cordial terms w/ both the Pandavas & the Yadavas. Vrishasena, Satyasena and his other sons too were overjoyed @ the victory of their nephews.

Vrushadeva then arrived @ the field, along w/ Jhanvi, Vedavati as well as Bali & Charumati. They congratulated the princes, and greeted the defeated enemies. Vrushadeva told Krishna that he accepted the decision of his sons, that since Krishna's avatar was over, they no longer bore any ill will towards him, and also, since Arjun & Nakul had been punished for the deaths of Vrushadeva's brothers, no more ill will would be held against them either.

Duhsala and her grandson were brought from Hastinapur, and given their new kingdom. The Saindava followers of theirs decided to follow her, and settled down in Jayadravya. The Kekaya ruler signed a treaty w/ them, promising them that they'd no longer be attacked from his kingdom.

Everybody then went to Kuntipura, and this time, once again paid homage to Karna. The Pandavas accepted the complete independence of Vrushadeva's kingdom, and told him that they'd no longer dictate terms to the rest of Aryavarta. Yudisthir laid down his title as emperor, and that he'd only remain the king of Hastinapur from now on. Arjun announced that he was returning his Gandhiva to Varuna. Following this, the Pandavas returned to Hastinapur.

Krishna, Jambavati & Bhadra then visited Suryaprastha and spent a few weeks there, and were welcomed by Jhanvi & Vedavati. Relations b/w them were now much normalized. After that, Krishna returned to Dwarka, while Jambavati & Bhadra remained w/ their daughters a little longer b4 they too returned.
