Chapter 11 - The Beginning of Something

Link to: Table of Contents

Preet and Meher slowly walked back to the hotel in silence. It had been quite a night. Preet had never been afraid of heights before, but walking on a window ledge 10 stories up had given him a new prespective on things.

Mr. Bakshi had scolded him for Meher's predicament, saying it was highly irresponsible of him not to have picked her up from the train station. He told Preet to forget about the party and just take her home. To his and Gaurav's relief Meher had not spoken much, and seeing her in person had made Rishap stop questioning their story.

After Mr. Bakshi and the others left, the police dispersed the 2 local reporters at the scene and took a statement from Meher. They then promptly checked the other rooms on the floor for the goons who had kidnapped her, but it appeared that they had heard the commotion outside caused by her being out on the ledge and fled. The police told Preet he could bring his wife down to the station and file an FIR for her missing jewelry. She could also look through the photographs they had there and try and identify the thugs.

When Preet and Meher reached the hotel, the valet brought his car around. He opened the door for Meher, and she quietly got in.

"So...um...where to?" asked Preet, as he started to drive.

"I don't know", said Meher.

"Well...were you going to stay with someone in Mumbai?" asked Preet. He held out his phone for her. "Do you want to call them?"

Meher shook her head. "I only know you".

"Okay then...I can always check you into a hotel", offered Preet.

"What if they come looking for me?" Meher asked in a small voice.

"Oh...um...look Meher...you're welcome to crash at my place for the night", Preet said hesitantly, "but I've got like the nosiest neighbor in the world, and she already has a very poor opinion of me, and I don't want to make it worse. If she ever tells my very traditional mother that I did a very untraditional thing and had a girl up in my place...that too over night...Ma would kill me and then haul my carcus back to Ludhiana faster than you could say 'Go!' And I just can't afford for that to happen right now. Anyway why am I telling you all this? I know it probably goes against some principle of yours too, so let's just forget I even suggested it..."

"No, it's okay", said Meher.

"Huhn?" said Preet.

"I said it's okay", said Meher. "We can go to your place".

"We can?" Preet said in surprise.

"Please...", whispered Meher. "I don't want to be alone. I don't feel safe".

Preet looked at Meher. She still seemed quite shaken up. "I guess...it's the least I could do...since you came out here and helped me", he said reluctantly. "Okay...home it is. Just don't tell my mother".

A short while later...

Preet parked his car and walked to his building with Meher following closely behind him. He was greeted by the guard at the gate.

"Hey Happy Ji, how's it going?" smiled Preet. "How is your wife doing?"

"Fine sir", said Happy. "The baby should be coming any day now". He offered Meher a smile, and she immediately took a step behind Preet.

"Oh hey Meher, you don't have to worry...this is Happy Singh", explained Preet. "He's our watchman. And Happy Ji this is..."

"Your wife...", Happy interrupted. He pointed to the small portable TV on his table. "I saw it on the news. Welcome home Bhabi Ji".

"No...actually...she's just...uh...nevermind", sighed Preet.

Preet led Meher up to his apartment. He was about to let her in, when his neighbor Kuljeet peeped her head out her door. "Akhir kar le aye bechari ko ghar (So...you brought the poor thing home after all)", she cried. "Don't you worry honey. I live just down the hall. If he does anything again, don't go out on the window ledge...just come to me".

Great...not Kuljeet too! Thought Preet, as he rolled his eyes. Looks like no one has anything better to do on a Saturday night than watch the local news. Preet entered his apartment, switched on the lights, and watched Meher look around the messy room.

"Well, here it is...home sweet home. I know it's not much to look at, but it's enough for one person", said Preet as he quickly picked some clothes off the sofa and straightened up a few cushions. "Excuse the mess. I've been spending most of my time at the office, so I haven't really had the chance to tidy up for guests. Actually I wasn't really expecting guests".

Preet looked at Meher. She was still standing in one place. "Aren't you going to say anything?" he asked. "I mean, I feel like I'm talking to myself".

"I'm hungry", said Meher.

"What?" asked Preet.

"I'm hungry. Do you have anything to eat?" she asked.

"Oh...yeah...sure", said Preet. "Why don't you freshen up and I'll see about getting dinner started. That's the bedroom over there, by the way. You can sleep there tonight, and I'll make myself comfortable on the sofa. The washroom is over to your left. I don't suppose you have a change of clothes with you though. We'll see what we can do about that. By the way, that's an interesting choice of dress. Tum kahin waqai mandap se toh nahin bhag ke ayi? (You didn't really run away from a wedding did you?)"

Meher looked up at Preet as if she may cry again. "Hey relax...it was a joke", he said. "Just go wash up...then we'll eat...okay?"

After Meher left, Preet went into the kitchen and checked the contents of his fridge. There were some leftovers in a box, but he took one whif of them and gagged. He promptly tossed the box in the trash bin. "I guess I can always order pizza or Chinese. I wonder what Meher would like".

Preet waited for Meher to return from the washroom, but when she didn't do so for a while, he went to check on her. To his surprise, he found her in the bedroom fast asleep on the bed, with one hand resting under her cheek. He quietly approached her and smiled. In her fancy dress she looked like a doll. Poor thing, thought Preet. She's had one hell of a day. She must be exhausted. He carefully pulled the bed covers over her, and then walked out of the room to let her rest.

The next day...

It was almost lunch time when Meher finally opened her eyes. She went out to the living room in search of Preet, but found that no one was home. Just then the door opened and Preet walked in.

"Thank God you're finally up. I was starting to get worried", he smiled, as he laid several items on the table. "And perfect timing too. Look what I brought. Piping hot pizza! I didn't know what your preference was so I got plain, veggie and meat lovers. And this bag here contains a change of clothes. It's pink. You like pink don't you? I figured you'd want to get out of that heavy outfit you're wearing. And this is a ticket back to Delhi. It's for tomorrow, so I'm afraid you're going to have to stay another day".

"I hope that's not a problem", said Meher.

"Na! It's only one more day", smiled Preet. "Besides...once you're gone, I'm sure even Kuljeet will forget. You know what they say...out of sight out of mind. But don't you worry about that, she's my headache".

"Thank you Preet", said Meher. "You seem to have thought of everything".

"Why don't you go and change then we'll eat", suggested Preet. "Just don't go back to sleep again".

A short while later, Meher was back and feeling much better in her new clothes. Preet placed a plate with 2 slices of pizza before her. To his surprise Meher quickly gulped down everything, and was ready for a second helping. She hadn't eaten anything since the small roll Jaspreet had given her on the train, and she was very hungry.

"And I thought I was the one with a ferocious appetite", joked Preet.

"I'm sorry", blushed Meher.

"It's okay. I was just joking", laughed Preet, as he pushed a box of pizza closer to her. "I like a girl with a strong appetite. It's a...sign of good health". He took a bite of his own pizza, and quietly observed Meher, as she helped herself to another slice. He hoped she would say something but when she didn't, he spoke up again. "You're something else you know that. I mean...first you tell me to get lost, and then you change your mind and decide to come to Mumbai to help me out after all".

"Well...", Meher said hesitantly. "To tell you the truth...I didn't really..."

"And then that stunt you pulled last night", interrupted Preet. "What possessed you to go out onto the ledge like that?"

"I don't know", Meher said quietly. "Those men were planning to...I guess I was just trying to survive".

"Hmm...", said Preet. "Well, I wish you had just called me to pick you up. It would have saved us both a lot of trouble. Anyway, no point in crying over spilled milk, especially since everything worked out in the end".

After the meal was finished, Preet took Meher down to the police station to lodge a complaint against the thugs who had accosted her the night before. Since he had let the police and his boss assume she was his wife, Meher agreed to let Preet give his own name and address for the police to contact should they find the thieves. He then dropped her home and headed for the office. He had some work he wanted to take care of. It was late when he returned and Meher was already asleep.

The next morning...

Preet gently knocked on his bedroom door. He had just showered and needed to get his clothes. When no one answered, he peeked into the room. Meher was still fast asleep. He quietly tiptoed into the room and made his way to the closet. He quickly picked out something to wear then came to his dresser to comb his hair. Almost forgot the tie, he thought. He walked back to his closet and picked out a tie and went back out to the living room to have breakfast and finish dressing. He was still struggling with his tie when Meher came out.

"May I?" she offered.

"You know how to tie a tie?" Preet asked in surprise.

"I used to watch my mom tie them for my Papa Ji, when I was little", explained Meher. "He was a farmer and toiled in the fields all day. But on special occasions he liked to dress up in a suit and tie and take me and Ma out. He used to say it made him feel like a gentleman. I would practice tying his ties on this stuffed teddy bear I had, just so it would look like a real gentleman too at the tea parties I'd have for my dolls. There you go".

"Hey that's neat", smiled Preet, as he looked down at the tie she had just fastened for him. "Listen Meher, I wanted to apologize to you. I know I gave you a pretty hard time at Veera's wedding, but you still came down here and helped me out. Thanks".

Meher bit her lower lip, feeling slightly guilty that Preet had repeatedly shown gratitude for her help, when in reality she had only been running from her own problems. "Well...actually...", she said.

"And I'm glad we got to spend the last 2 days together", interrupted Preet, "because I realize now that you're really not as bad as I thought you were".

"Gee thanks Preet", smiled Meher. "You're alright too".

"Yeah well...there's some juice and toast in the fridge", said Preet. "I've left the spare key to the apartment on the table, along with a check for the amount I promised you and your ticket. Oh and here's some cash". Preet handed Meher some money. "It should be enough for any taxis you need to hire and in case you get hungry and want to buy some snack or something on your way back. Your train leaves at 3pm. I would have liked to take you to the station myself, but I have a busy day at work today. Ask Happy Ji to call a cab for you around 1pm, and leave the key with him when you're ready to go. Don't forget to call me to let me know you've reached home safely...Oh and Meher...thanks again for everything".

Meher nodded and smiled, as she watched Preet leave, closing the door behind him. She then picked up the check he had left for her and knowing she couldn't accept it, tore it into small pieces and threw it into the trash. She proceeded to fix herself some breakfast, then called Maya to let her know she was coming home.

"Hello Maya, it's me Meher", she said.

"Meher! Are you're alright?" cried Maya. "I've been so worried".

"I'm fine Maya", said Meher. "I'm sorry I couldn't call sooner, but I lost my phone. I've had quite an adventure since running away from the wedding venue, and you'll never guess where I wound up".

"Where?" asked Maya. "On second thought it's better if you don't tell me".

"What? Why?" asked Meher.

"All hell's broken loose here Meher", explained Maya. "Your chachee went totally ballistic after she found out you had run away. You were right. All she cared about was the money. She kept going on and on about how you just threw everything away.

Mr. Kashyap was pretty embarrassed about having to tell his guests no wedding was taking place. But your chachee reassured him that you had just gotten cold feet and needed some more time because you were still mourning for your mother. She made it seem like you had behaved very selfishly.

I tried to tell Mr. Kashyap that you didn't want to marry Viren, but he already knew about his son's character. Before I could say anything else in your defense, your chachee started accusing me of purposely adding fuel to the fire because I was jealous that Viren was marrying you instead of me! Then she busied herself with reminding Mr. Kashyap of the promise he made to your mother to make sure you'd be taken care of. To top it all off, Viren put on this whole I love Meher, I'm a changed man because of her, and I deserve a chance drama, and his dad really seemed to buy into it".

"What a load of bull", cried Meher. "Viren doesn't love me. He only loves his father's money. I can't believe Mr. Kashyap is being so gullible. Actually...I don't really know what he's thinking. At first I thought maybe he was trying to be helpful to me or Ma, but this is all really about saving Viren. Well...I'm not going to let him ruin my life just so that he can straighten out his wayward son. I have to get in touch with him as soon as possible and tell him to leave me out of this father-son mess".

"I'm afraid that's not going to be possible Meher", said Maya. "Mr. Kashyap left for some international tour of his companies. He won't be back until the end of this month. He's forbidden Viren to go to the police or reveal their private family matters to the media, but he's also given him only until he returns to find you, sort things out and convince you for marriage. He refused any pleas Viren made about changing his will before then".

"Oh no", said Meher.

"It get's worse", sighed Maya. "I overheard Viren swearing to his friend that he'd not only find you but make sure you guys are married before his father returned. He apparently owes debts to some really nasty people. And without you he no longer has access to the Kashyap fortune. His goons permanently parked themselves outside our door. And they were threatening me too, so I had to give the place up and move back in with my mom".

"I'm so sorry Maya", said Meher. "I'm so sorry that you had to get involved in any of this".

"Hey don't worry about me, I'm fine now", said Maya. "Just take care of yourself. And if you're in a safe place, then just stay there and lay low, until Mr. Kashyap returns. Do whatever it takes, but just don't come back to Delhi, because God know what Viren will do if he gets his hands on you".

Meher hung up the phone, sat down on the sofa and put her head in her hands. Things were so messed up. From Maya's description of the situation, going back to chachu and chachee's place seemed out of the question. Chachee would be more than happy to hand her over to Viren. Mr. Kashyap wouldn't be back for another 3 weeks either. Uff! How could he do this to her?! Would he even listen to what she had to say when she spoke to him? And more importantly, where would she hide for the next 3 weeks? Maybe she should tell Preet everything. Would he help? Would he care? He had already been so reluctant to let her just spend the night...3 weeks would seem like an eternity to him. If only she hadn't lost that card Jaspreet had given her. But it's just as well. If Viren ever found out she was in Mumbai, he'd definitely check all the shelters. What should she do?

Later that evening...

Preet was putting some files away, when there was a knock on his office door. He looked up just in time to see Ashlesha walk in. "Hi", he smiled.

"Hi Preet", she smiled back. "Still working when everyone else has gone home?"

"Yeah well, Mr. Bakshi made me the new creative head for the Oreo campaign", said Preet. "So I just thought that..."

"You'd prove to him that he had made the right decision", said Ash. She walked up to him and played with his tie. "So you finally started wearing a tie...nice".

"Thanks", gulped Preet.

"But you know what I say Preet?" she continued. "All work and no play...makes Preet a very dull boy. I bet you're feeling pretty lonely now that wifey dear is gone".

"Well...", said Preet.

"Never fear...Ash is here", smiled Ashlesha. "You're taking me to dinner".

"I am?" said Preet.

"You've been wanting to ask me out, haven't you?" asked Ashlesha.

"Yes but...that was before...", began Preet.

"Okay then I'd love to", interrupted Ashlesha.

"No...what I meant was...that was before everyone found out I got...", tried Preet.

"...married?" said Ashlesha. "Uff Preet! We're business colleagues, and colleagues get together all the time, so why not us?"

Preet thought for a minute. Ash was right. So what if someone from the office, saw the 2 of them out together? He could probably pass it off as a business dinner. And he had wanted to get to know her better. And who knows...if things worked out between them, maybe she could even be trusted to keep this secret about Meher and him not really being married . "Right...um...I'll just make some reservations", he finally suggested.

"I have a better idea", said Ashlesha. "How about if we dine in tonight? At your place".

Preet smiled. He couldn't believe his good luck. First a promotion, and now the girl he had been trying for so long to score a date with was herself suggesting they get together out of public sight. On her suggestion he took Ashlesha home. Happy Ji greeted them at the gate, but was a little surprised at seeing Preet with Ashlesha. He was about to say something to Preet, but Ashlesha pulled him away, anxious to get upstairs.

Preet opened his door ready to make excuses for the messy state of his apartment, but to his surprise it was all neat and tidy, as if someone had spent a lot of effort in giving it a thorough cleaning.

"I thought you said your place was a mess", said Ashlesha. "This is actually very nice".

This must be Meher's doing, Preet thought. That's another thing I'm going to have to thank her for. I hope she got on the train alright.

Meanwhile...

Meher was in the bedroom going through Preet's closet looking for something suitable to wear. She picked out a T-shirt and some pajamas. This would have to do for now, she decided, as she slipped the shirt on. Just then she heard voices coming from the living room. Was Preet home already? She had to talk to him right away and explain her situation. Whether or not he'd agree to help remained to be seen. She quickly slipped on the rest of the outfit, crossed her fingers and headed for the door. She had just opened it slightly when she heard a girl's voice.

Meher's eyes widened and her mouth fell open as she saw Preet with another girl. So this is the mother he was so anxious to get rid of me for! And I spent the whole day cooking and cleaning and fretting over just how I'd be able to convince him to let me stay a little longer. Meher peeked through the crack in the door again. Hmph! He's following her around like a pet poodle! What a liar! What should I do now?

Meanwhile...

"How about some music?" asked Ashlesha.

"Sure", said Preet. He had just walked over to his stereo and turned it on, when he felt something that made him jump. "Um...Ash...is that your hand on my behind?"

"Oh...is that my hand?" chuckled Ashlesha. "I wonder how it got there".

"Yeah...well...uh...heh heh...", said Preet, as he took a step away and pulled out his phone. "How about if I order dinner now?"

Ashlesha took Preet by the hand, led him back to the sofa, and put her arms around his neck. "Actually Preet, I'm not really hungry...for food that is..."

"You're not", whispered Preet, as Ashlesha pushed him down making him fall onto the sofa.

"Na ha. I'd much rather have some fruit", said Ashlesha, as she sat in Preet's lap and rubbed her nose against his. "Have I ever told you that there's something so delightfully irresistible about forbidden fruit?"

"There is?" Preet gulped, as Ashlesha loosened his collar and pulled off his tie.

Ashlesha nodded. "You know Preet...there is a certain electric energy I feel whenever I'm around you".

"Uh...yeah...it's probably static from all the rubbing your leg is doing against mine", said Preet as he tried to get up.

"I have a feeling that anything can happen tonight", said Ashlesha as she pushed him down again. "...and before we go any further, I want you to know that I don't have any funny diseases and I'm on the pill. How about you?"

"I'm not on the pill", said Preet.

"Ha! You are so funny", laughed Ashlesha.

"Um...Ash...don't you think you're moving just a little too fast here?" said Preet.

"But I like you Preet", whispered Ashlesha. "I mean...really really like you". She tiltled her head and was about to kiss him, when all of a sudden something caught her eye. "Preet!" she hissed. "I thought you said your wife only comes by on the weekends".

"Yeah...so?" said Preet, puzzled yet slightly relieved at her sudden distracted behavior.

"Then why is she standing right behind you?" Ashlesha asked pulling herself away.

Preet turned around equally surprised to see Meher standing in the bedroom doorway with her arms folded. "Meh...Meh...Meher! Tum yahan kya kar rahi ho?" he stammered. (What are you doing here?)

"Hi honey, I didn't know you were bringing home a guest for dinner", Meher replied sarcastically. She walked up to Ashlesha and looked her over as if sizing her up. "So this is what you've been doing behind my back? A little mistress to break up the 'monogomy''?"

"Oh my God! This is so embarrassing!" cried Ashlesha.

"What is?" Meher asked innocently. "The fact that you were trying to seduce my husband or that you got caught doing it?"

"Wait a minute!" cried Preet. "Will someone please tell me what is going on here?"

"I can't believe you let me make a fool of myself like this Preet Juneja!" cried Ashlesha, as she headed out the door. "I hate you!"

Preet watched Ashlesha walk out and slam the door behind her, before turning his attention towards Meher. "Meher...", he said as he passed his hand over his face. "What are you still doing here? And why are you wearing my favorite T-shirt and pajamas?"

"What do you mean what am I doing here?" smiled Meher as she plopped herself down on the sofa. "I live here...with you".

"Huhn?" said Preet as his mouth fell open in surprise.

"The outfit you bought for me got soiled while cleaning up this place", Meher continued with her explanation. "I've washed it and put it out to dry. In the meantime, I though I'd borrow this. Really Preet you should take better care of the apartment and yourself. But don't worry, now that I'm here, I'll fix everything".

"Okay this is crazy", said Preet shaking his head in disbelief. "Did you like hit yourself on the head or something, because you are forgetting that you don't live here. We're not really married".

"Really?" smiled Meher. "Then why was that cheap floozy calling me your wife?"

"She's not a cheap floozy", said Preet.

"She looked like a cheap floozy to me", countered Meher.

"Why am I even arguing with you on this topic?" cried Preet. "Bottom line is...we're not married. We just made up that story because my boss wouldn't give me a promotion otherwise...remember?!? But that does not mean that we're really married".

"You know Preet, you're just not making any sense" said Meher. "You must be hungry. Why don't you go freshen up, and I'll warm up dinner".

"You cooked dinner?" asked Preet.

"Of course", Meher smiled proudly. "It wasn't easy though. You don't really keep your fridge well stocked with anything of nutrional value. But I took the money you left this morning and went shopping. Happy Ji directed me to a small market nearby, where I could buy some vegetables. He's very helpful you know".

"I don't believe this", muttered Preet, as he watched Meher move about the apartment still chattering excitedly.

"Do you think you'll have some time this week, to take me shopping Preet?" asked Meher. "I would like to buy some more clothes. One outfit is not enough you know. And I'm sure you'd like your favorite T-shirt back".

"I think...I need to...ask a friend", he mumbled, as he took out his phone and called Gaurav. "Gaurav get the hell over here. I think I've just created a monster".

Welcome back Fatima ji🤗 I mean to FF land.😎

pg 92 ooh this one is less drama.
Beginning - getting back, car ride, convo, Meher's state of mind. It was all realistic.
Wow I can't believe she was still wearing bridal dress. - she's definitely got strong bones and muscles. Cuz usually those dresses weigh a ton.
The way Meher Preet sorting things was nice. Wow y doesn't Preet let Meher speak? He keeps talking on her behalf.😲 I guess he got carried away a bit too much.
Nosy neighbor haha wow. That was fun. I love this Happy Ji scene.😆 I always wondered how ppl get name like that. It's cool you decided to use that in your story.
Hmm Meher going back to horrible Chachi - man she was too dumb to think like that.😲
Making Mr.Kashyap understand is possible but just not in front of her Chachi or his nephew or whoever. I can't believe she was going back there.
Maya was a lil less dramatic today 😆 but gave useful info to Meher.
Wow Meher making herself at home is interesting. Didn't Preet give her his phone #? She could have called and informed him about change of plans. Happy ji was trying to save the embarrassment but oh well.
Ash was in her element - flirting. Now that's new , she even shocked Preet! Haha Meher's entry finally saved him.😆
Now Gaurav is on the way or not 😕 Couldn't tell fr your preview.
I'm sure Meher will be fine with or w/o Preet's help. If Gaurav is around, he or his wife will help if Preet throws a tantrum re: this.
Let's see.
I couldn't remember exactly but the dialogues, words used are funny.
Interesting ch. Ty.
