I have been reading several posts about Aaliya's shamelessness as she wore that dress et al. Now, I am not a Muslim, so this is more of a question.
I'm from an expat family, so I have lived in Saudi Arabia as a kid, and I remember my mother not even able to peek out from our home's window - they had some weird law about that too! So, yeah, she wore a complete burqa. But some years ago, I met my current best friend, who is Iraqi and Turkish, and she actually had no restrictions on her clothes - had pink hair and all. I even visited her home, and yeah, they did the namaz and everything, but otherwise, they were pretty chill.

My question is whether the Quran actually states about women being conservatively dressed? I did do some internet research and found that nothing has being stated as such. So, is our thinking a cultural thing, or religious?
My family has always just beaten it into my head, that your respect is in the way you conduct yourself, not in the way you dress or anything!

Again, no offence to the religion, my question is just a part of my inquisitiveness. This is just something I've wondered for years, belonging to a different religion. Thanks!

the outfits worn by aliya and ayat in yesterday's episodes are not islamically acceptable.. Islam does outline a dress code for women which states that woman should be fully covered and the only skin show allowed is that of their face and hands. They are allowed to wear any outfits they like i.e. they can wear western clothes such as tops and jeans as long as their skin is not showing they aren't restricted on what they choose to wear..
"O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies. That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed."(Quran 33:59)
When a girl reaches the menstrual age, it is not proper that anything should remain exposed except this and this. He pointed to the face and hands.[Abu Dawud]

Yaa...that's true. It doesn't matter what you wear except that your body should be covered and the clothes should also not be tight because then ur body features are clearly visible.

Also you'll find in Turkey a lot of Turkish Muslims do not adhere to the laws of Islam...I have visited the country and found women bearing skin and both men and women drinking alcohol which is strictly prohibited in Islam...I don't know about Iraq but this is a way of life for many Turkish Muslims...though I'd like to point out that not all are like that but many of them are...

Thanks. I actually read and referred to this article a while ago, and found it to be really powerful. I don't know if I can post it here so here's the name - The Burqa - Cultural or religious, by Chris Moore.

He ended by mentioning:
2:256 There shall be no compulsion in religion: the right way is now distinct from the wrong way. Anyone who denounces the devil and believes in God has grasped the strongest bond; one that never breaks. God is Hearer, Omniscient.

Actually, her maternal grandmother is her only Turkish heritage. I have been there too though, and I found it really enjoyable.

I guess, being never subjected to these rules, I still feel a little weird when I think about the life in SA. I understand that you are Muslim - I earlier made a post about polygamy, what is your POV on it? It makes me a little skittish.

Don't get me wrong...I loved Turkey and have visited the country three times...even though many of them aren't practicing Muslims, Turks are really friendly and welcoming...that in itself tells you that religion doesn't define you as a person...and one thing that I believe even as a Muslim is NEVER judge a person, what is in ones heart and what is shown to the world is two different things...I believe ONLY Allah can judge and find us wanting...we are mere Human Beings who are flawed in so many ways...

Honestly speaking I don't like the way of life in SA...I've been born and brought up in UK and find that the SA government imposes too many strict rules on the women...as for Polygamy although some people do practice it, I don't like it and get annoyed with my husband whenever he says he'll find a second wife even in jest...but although personally I don't like it, it is permissible in Islam and I wouldn't judge anyone else if they do go for it...

Something EVERY religion has in common is to be a GOOD HUMAN FIRST, and islam is no exception.

Why is it that Aliya is being called a horrible muslim over her dressing !??

DRESSING IS A PART OF RELIGION NOT WHAT MAKES THE ENTIRE RELIGION.

Hi.. I would like to share my view...

Islam teaches us, i mean the females to cover themselves up so that there body is not exposed.. Just as you anything precious is covered and protected, Allah asks us to cover and protect ourselves.. however if someone is not willing to do so, its his or her own wish and will..

At the end of the day, you are answerable for yours own deeds...

Islam also teaches us that you should NOT judge a person on anything.. Somebody might not dress appropriately and they might be more closer to God because of their good deeds which you might not know of and you also maybe lacking in it...

What Aaliya did was wrong. She could have gone for a fully covered dress or a gown with full sleeves.. We do have gowns like that... So yeah she could do that..

But since her intention was not to flaunt herself around, and she was here for another purpose. .
What she could do was, go for a full sleeves gown or fully covered something similar to Suraiyya... Liek not saree but something else.. We do have fully covered gowns...

Everything also depends on Intention... If her intention was not to flaunt or expose herself, she did not commit a grave mistake.. But she had it in her hands to change it...

And about Polygamy - Polygamy is not allowed for a guy to use and throw his wives.. Though it is taken that way..

Islam allows a guy to marry twice only if he gives equal rights to both the wives... Not hurting one wife and having fun with another wife... But people have started using it to their own benefits..
Our current generation especially cannot bear sharing your husband... How much ever you convince myself... And it is an individual choice..

And Allah knows best.. .I hope this helps you...
