Part 9 Moving on!
Raman Kumar Bhalla and Mrs.Raman Kumar Bhalla were essentially the most un-romatic newly weds. All that they did after their marriage for Ruhi's convenience was to head back to their respective careers with their private hells in place.
Ishita got back to work but her heart, thoughts and actions were all centered around Ruhi. She quietly tailored her day to suit Ruhi's needs. Went to work with a big smile and came home with a bigger smile. Now of course home was across her amma's door. Bedroom was to be shared with a usually drunk Raman. While Raman was leading his tortured week, Ashok had made his life hell by planting seeds of doubt in Raman's mind about Ruhi's paternity. Raman went through a roller-coaster of black moods and inflicted agony on the rest of his family - his parents and his wife while trying to come to grips with himself.
Work was suffering. But Ruhi's suffering from the dog attack brought a teary Raman and Ishita to the same side of life. When a tearful Raman reneged on the donating blood Raman's parents were stunned. Ishita was desperate to look for alternatives. She played straight in Ashok's trap calling Shagun and Ashok. Raman's torment at Ashok gloating about how Ruhi was his and calling himself her papa was gust of cold air on her face that shook her. She somehow recognized that what she saw in Raman's eyes - raw pain- that somehow felt like her own. There was more to this she concluded.
The doctor declaring that Ruhi was on her road to recovery was what the family wanted to hear. Raman carried his darling daughter back to his home and bed. He was moved to see the concern the Iyer's had for his daughter, and Ishita was surprised to see the fear that the family felt when they heard from Aditya. Mr Bhalla decided to take matters into his hands after Raman returned from Ashok's flat shattered with his son's demand. He called Mihir and the family left Raman at home. Mr.Bhalla told Raman to stay away from Aditya and this matter as he was legally restrained from his son.
Raman spent the evening alone with Ishita and Ruhi. That was a first for them. Ruhi was happy her father was reading to her and she was happily nestled on his lap, with her hurt foot laid across his lap. Ishita finally realized there was more to Raman than he was letting her on to. She watched the father - daughter interaction with interest. She did not miss the softness in Raman's eyes when he was reading to his daughter, he smiled at Ruhi when she tried swallowing her yawn unsuccessfully. Raman picked his daughter curled up on the bed next to her. Ishita did not have the heart to wake him up when she walked in.
She was getting ready to settle down with her tea when she heard soft sobs from just outside the kitchen. She walked out with knitted eyebrows and was stunned to see Raman crying into a cushion crouched on the the sofa. Ishita could not bear to see arrogant Raman like that. She poured half her tea into another cup and walked over to him. Raman quickly wiped his tears and tried to appear normal. She handed him a cup as if she did not notice him crying. He nodded a thanks and they finished up in silence. He got back to his lap top and was punching away with a vengeance. She walked to their bedroom and slipped quietly next to Ruhi. Raman walked in and saw his wife and Ruhi sleep in peace. He told himself that Ishita deserved at least this much and he would do his utmost to ensure that.
Raman was picking up his pillow and heading to the couch when he felt a hand on his shoulder. "Raman we should talk" whispered Ishita...not another lecture he groaned in his head was pleasantly surprised to see Ishita hold his elbow and steer him out of the room. She was still holding his hands when she told him she wanted to be of help with whatever problem the family was grappling with and whatever it was that had left him rocked.
"Tum meri beti ka khyal rakhna bus bhaki hum sambhal lenge" he said. "Raman please...I want to make sure Ruhi will have you with her like you were with her this evening...I know that something is bothering you and you do love your daughter" she pleaded. "Let me help, I want to be there for Ruhi; i want to be there for you Raman. I'm thankful for what you have given me - Ruhi and I now want give you something by helping you find a way out of your problems. I know you can never love me but I can...I can love Ruhi and her papa..please don't let your love for Shagun stop us from being good parents for Ruhi..." she sniffed. "Ishita...I don't love that woman, she left me for another man..who tells me Ruhi is his child and he will grab her back. But Ruhi is mine Ishita..she is only mine, she is our's you don't worry". he concluded.
"Raman...kya wo admi kuch bhi kahega aur hum maan lenge? she asked him getting to her knees and kneeling in front of Raman with her hands on his knees. " Agar Ruhi such me uski thi to kya wo chup rehta court mein??" she asked. "I'm sure Ruhi is yours... our's Raman...there are many ways to prove if we have to.. leave that to me.." she said doggedly. Raman put his arms and around her and cradled her head close to his chest. No one had ever said that they would take his pressure off him...no one ever. He smiled into Ishita's hair, it did not matter whether she delivered what she promised or not the fact that she was there every step of the way with him was enough for him. He was capable of doing things on his own, but she had just made his life a little less painful by offering to be with him in his struggle. Ishita's arms too found it's way around his neck and they sat listening to the silence that had enveloped them.
Raman did not notice how soft she felt,he only felt her silent strength. He was happy to have a woman as selfless as Ishita was. Would he ever be able to fall in love again, he wondered.
Loved it...felt gqood. Let raman be happy in these stories atleast...
