Olympic host - India

Do you think India would have been ready to host Olympic games in 2016? Why / why not? If yes, are we really ready with our infrastructure and an open-minded society? If not, is it because we are yet a developing country with better agendas than sports? Is it because we don't have accomplished athletes looking at the population : athletic achievement ratio? Other reasons-

Let is avoid this turning into a Delhi vs other city war.. 😆😆

India shelves plans for 2016 Olympics bid

India has given up on plans to bid for the 2016 Olympics following its failure to land the 2014 Asian Games, the country's Olympic association (IOA) said.

South Korea's Incheon beat New Delhi in an Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) vote in Kuwait on hosting the 2014 Asiad last week.

"We thought of bidding for the 2016 Olympics because we have the 2010 Commonwealth Games and were planning to host the 2014 Asiad," IOA President Suresh Kalmadi told The Times of India newspaper.

"So by 2016 we could have an Olympics for free, since by then infrastructure would have been in place."

The IOA has blamed sports minister Mani Shankar Aiyar for the failed bid, saying his statement earlier this month that New Delhi hosting the Commonwealth Games was an attempt to improve the country's global image but of little relevance to the common man caused the damage.

"But with Aiyar around there is no question of even attempting the 2016 Olympics. Now we have to look at 2020. For now we will concentrate on staging the Commonwealth Games in a good manner," Kalmadi said.

New Delhi is to stage the 2010 Commonwealth Games at an estimated cost of 70 billion rupees.

india has come a long way from where it was before may be 10 or 20 years ago 👏 👏 👏 , so hosting olympics in 2016 would have been possible. however, some of the issues such as poverty, electricity, water problems pointed out in another thread might be debatable one if it would be solved by that time or not. imo, even if its not solved, hosting olympic could have poured in tourists from other places which could boost indias economy to some extent. india doesnt have accomplished athletes? hmmm....no comments 😆 😆 😆 however i am not sure about the infrastructure and how people over there would welcome this event.

YES! By the pace they were working on infrastructural changes in Delhi, it was evident. Minus the sealing etc, they were really progressing nicely with SubWay etc. Sad to learn this news all that improvement in the name of Olympics will stop.

i agree with you and heard the same thing from someone who visited delhi and was giving us the updates on the improvement and the progress it had made, heard about the metros there too 😊

Personally I don't think India will be ready for hosting Olympics for atleast next 20-25 yrs. I have seen China and the type of changes they are working on making to accomodate Olympics. I was there just last yr and after coming back I wish I had gone after 2008 Olympics to see the complete changes they are making. I was damn impressed.

First let India work on their Infrastructure than they can think about hosting olympics. I would be very happy if that day is sooner than later. Helps the economy.

DB - have u visited Delhi recently... these guys for a change are spending some money in the right direction 😃 .. as poster mentioned lets not make this post on Delhi... but things are changing overall in India. I was amazed to hear my family friend experience in india last month. Its time to reevaluate our opinions on India😊 off topic. I guess.

If there is pressure to perform in fron tof the world to get recognised of to achieve sanctions I see no reasons why Auth. in India won't make it happen (Olympics) in 2016.

Olympics in India is like Cricket World cup in Holland
I think first we should get more than 2-3 medals in a olympics game, show we are really able to compete(to win) and not just make trips for sightseeing

It would be very embrassing to see the host country win two gold medals, one in kabaddi and one in kho-kho 😆 and no other medals
