I was always curious to know. As you can see from the current promo of the mahabharat serial the marriage of Draupadi to the 5 pandavas is named "adharm".

I know its a promo. But lets go back during that time period...obviously we all know the story on how Draupadi gets married to the 5 pandavas.

So what she had to do was definitely not the norm for back then. But then how is it the Pandavas or even Draupadi expected normal people to just accept this marriage without saying some sort of controversial statement? This act of theirs invited controversy.

Lord Krishna obviously accepted this as Drauapdi had her boon but social stigma still existed. But the marriage was not stopped it was allowed.

During that time period men had one or two wives besides Lord Krishna of course. And I know Women had many husbands. Just trying to understand the concept here!

The whole concept is quite mind baffling!

Please feel free to share your thoughts

well according to my CBSE history book, polyandry was not unheard of.
Maybe the women didnt officialy became wives, going through all the marriage ceremony with 7 feras and all, but a married women having children of her husband's brothers was practiced in case the husband is dead or cant have children. Also, it mentions there was shortage of women too so ..

The Pandava marriages to Draupadi were actually polyamourous.

Note:

Polygamy: 1:many or many:1 relationships
Monogamy: 1 hubby:1 wife
Polygyny: 1 hubby: >1 wife
Polyandry: >1 hubby: 1 wife
Polyamory: >1 hubby: 1 wife

So the Pandavas were in polygynous marriages w/ their wives, while Draupadi was in a polyandrous marriage. The other wives of the Pandavas - Hidimba, Devika, Valandhara, Ulupi, Chitrangada, Subhadra, Karenamati & Jarasandha's daughter - these wives were in monoandrous relationships w/ their respective hubbies.

Frankly, just think of it this way: Kunti had her four sons from four different gods (without marrying them). These sons were accepted in the society so, why not Draupadi?

You are mixing several very different things. The list I gave was a global relationship b/w #spouses - had nothing to do w/ the type of marriage. What you listed - gandharva marriage is one of the 8 categories of marriages as per the shastras. Swayamvara was a specific type of ceremony where brides could choose their grooms. Group marriages are when you have several couples married in a combined ceremony.

I am not mixing the facts but i just wanted all my friends to know that these type of marriages were practiced and are practiced to date even though we are against to some of kind of marriage.

Friends, I have posted this before, but once again I would like to share with u. In this serial, during marraige ceremony, neither grooms nor bride is shown happily. But it is not adharm.

Before her two births, Draupadi was Indrasena, wife of Sage Moudgalya. He suffered with Leprosy and highly aggressive, also a old man. Still, she served him with utmost love and affection. One day she was about to take her food in the plate in which her husband had. He was very much pleased and asked her "I want to give a boon, because your dedication and affection towards me is unexpressive. Ask me what do u want"

She told him: " I want to enjoy with u in all the beautiful places in this world. U should take 5 charming personalities and I should enjoy with u with these 5 pers." He accepted her request. Although she had a very great pleasure in that life and her life is finished, her soul cannot forget this enjoyment.

In the next birth as u know, she was the daughter of Kasi King, who did not get married for long time. She had done penance and when Lord Shiv appeared, with extreme excitement, she asked for 5 times "I need a husband". He told that u will have 5 husb. She initially rejected it . But Lord Shiv assured her that " You will possess a very good character and remain pure as Agni hotra. You will remainj Sumangali forever. " Later Lord Shiv told her that after some time, Indra will come in this way. U bring him to me.

Indra went to meet Brahma dev, because Lord Yama is participating Satra yag and so all the demons are on the earth. Brahma dev assures him that time has come and his son (Yudhishtir) will go on to the earth and become the cause for Dushta Sikshana.

When Indra was returning, Kasi King daughter stopped him and took to the place where Lord Shiva has asked to come. At that time, Lord Siva with Parvati appeared as young couple to them who were enjoying themselves and not noticing Indra. He became angry and shouted on them. Shiv asked his wife to push him down and she done in the same way. Indra has lost all his power. Now, Shiva asked Indra to open a cave which was near by. When Indra opened it, he observed that there are 4 people, who appeared very similar to him. Lord Shiv told him that they are also Indras in previous Yugs. As per my order, they were here. So you 5 will be born on earth as Pandavas to help Lord Krishna in killing demons. Swarga Lakshmi is Draupadi which was attained by Indra in all yugas.

So the marraige of Draupadi with Pandavas is dharm.

Note: I am telling this from Vyas Maha Bharat. My elders have clarified me this doubt.
