He likes to hold her hands, be close to her, listen to her, see her beautiful smile...but his ego comes in between. He is insulted and for a Emperor it's not easy to let go. So his brutal behavior is his cover up.

Looking forward for his reaction when Jodha drinks the poison. I think when she is still unconscious, he may get to know the reality of the letter too. So double guilt...What will Jalal do then??????????

Wonder if that is an empty promise just like the one of his not touching her without her consent. He did so today and will do so again. What a fool of a man! But then as the Bard said aren't fools, madmen and lovers alike? Jalal, poor guy, is all three in this instance, madly in love with his begum but foolishly unaware of his own feelings. He deserves what is coming to him. Hope Jodha takes him down a peg or two along with his own guilty conscience.
