18: The Lucky Khushi of Lucknow
"Jiji! Remember Bantilal's milk shop?" Khushi yelled to her sister who was seated behind her in the private bus. They had crossed the city bus that said "Lucknow" and Khushi had immediately begun to point the various places that she used to visit. It was the place where she spent some of the most memorable years of her life; how could she not be overflowing with excitement that everyone else on the bus could physically touch? She jumped from seat to seat, from window to window, to get a better look of the outside. Her exhilaration helped Arnav forget the bitter memories of his past - that and the fact that they were still away from the Shesh Mahal.
NK and Azmih were sitting happily on the seats that no one else wanted to sit on - the back seats. Everyone was aware that the roads in Lucknow were going to be bumpy, and if you wanted to have a healthy hip, you wouldn't sit at the back - but these are NK and Azmih...when are they ever normal? They seemed to be playing a game of "Who bounces the highest", and although one would expect NK to win (due to the height difference between a 4'11" girl and a 6'5" man), it was, surprisingly, Azmih that was winning. In fact, her head seemed to be hitting the roof at every other bump.
Akash was...um, who cares about him anyways - we can skip him!
The bus driver was driving with full concentration...not the road, but on his lunch box that was placed very close to Nani's spouse and was in danger of being eaten.
They were all headed towards the Gupta's old house; Azmih had selected the location to bring some happiness to Khushi, her didi, who had been smiling for the past couple of weeks, but never allowed it to reach her eyes. Azmih and NK both thought that Khushi would be happy if they visited her old house, which was apparently a haveli that could house them all.
* * *
By the time the bus stopped in front of the haveli, they had gathered quite a crowd - it wasn't every day that a big private bus came into these areas.
As soon as Khushi went out of the bus, they all heard a loud, manly voice calling "Khushi? Is that you?" The man pushed through the crowd and came face to face with Khushi. As soon as they saw each other, they both hugged tightly. The sight did not go well with Arnav. But when he got past his anger, and had decided to act on it, the man hugged Payal too and left Akash fuming. When that hug ended, NK and Azmih both spread their arms out and said, "Us too!" and went towards the man to give him a hug - a big hug by the looks of it. Although the man wanted to move back, he was too slow, and was caught in the hug from two strangers, who both said, "We missed you!" leaving everyone confused.
Khushi's thoughts - I'm so happy to be back! I want to get some chat from that lady by the corner of the block, and then some mistan from the kind grandpa on the other block. Oh, I can't wait!
Payal's thoughts - ... (You need a brain to have thoughts.)
Akash's thoughts - Payalji hugged another man, right in front of me? In front of the family? She doesn't even speak to me in our room, always looking on the ground...
Anjali's thoughts - I hope woh is all right. I miss him so much.
Nani's thoughts - The breath of fresh air of home! There's no place like Lucknow. But who was the man hugging Payal and Khushi bitya?
Mami's thoughts - Who ijj this boij? Izz he past luver? Investigation kari ka padi! (Who is this boy? Is he a past lover? Must investigate!)
Mama's thoughts - Manu will still were her heavy sari and gold in Lucknow's heat?
Lakshmi's thoughts - That food in the lunch box on the bus was amazing!
Arnav's thoughts - What the! Who is this guy! Why was Khushi hugging him? And why are NK and Jivvy hugging him? Do they know him? How? Why isn't Khushi making the introductions already! If he is anything other than her brother, I will physically assault him for touching MY Khushi (conveniently forgetting the times he was hugged or kissed by his female models).
After struggling out of the hug, the man looked at the two weirdoes and asked, "Who are you? I've never seen you before?"
"Oh yes Azmih and Nanheji! How do you know him?" Khushi asked, after swallowing the water that had crept up in her mouth from just thinking about all the food.
NK cheerfully opened a Lay's packet and munching on it said, "We don't know him!"
Azmih added, "That's why we said we missed him!" and dug her hands into NK's packet.
"Huh?" everyone seemed to say.
"We missed you means, we missed meeting you before!" NK clarified, fighting for a chip with Azmih (who finally bit his hand and ate from it). Arnav could not believe that this was his business associate - the one that many of his business contacts feared (although they'd never met her).
"So, tell us! What's your name? I'm Azmih and he's NK, my buddy."
"Aare, aisa ha toh pehla puchna tha na ji!" the man spoke up. "I'm Lucky. Lucky Singh." He pronounced his name proudly.
But the proudness washed off as Azmih started laughing and translated, "Lucky peanut! Ha ha ha." (Singh is peanut in Gujarati.)
"Hey! Don't make fun of his name." Khushi defended her friend after laughing with Azmih for a while. "We are the Lucky-Khushi pair of Lucknow okay?" With that, Khushi and Lucky both turned their backs on each other, so that they were touching, and made an imaginary gun with their fingers and shot at Azmih.
Unfortunately, Arnav wasn't feeling lucky after seeing Lucky-Khushi.
