Prompt: "Scene when they return from Mangalpur and an over protective Asad in action. Asad taking care of her injuries and all and Najma and Dilshad getting suspicious about them"
---
It was evening and Dilshad was sitting in the living room, flitting through a magazine when the front door opened and Asad entered the house, coming from his office.
"Asalaamu Alaikum, Ammi." He greeted his mother as he spotted her sitting there.
Dilshad smiled at her son and replied the greeting, "Walaikum Salam, Asad. How was your day?"
Asad nodded at her and answered, "It was good, Ammi; productive. I managed to finish the new project that I had been working on for the past few weeks."
Dilshad smiled in understanding, "Well, that is very good then. I am glad that you got it done. I have been noticing for a while that you had been looking very stressed and worried. It must have been this project, right? It sounds like it was rather important for you." She said.
Asad shifted on his feet as Dilshad spoke. She was right that he had been stressed and worried over the past few days, but she had not pinpointed the correct reason for his worry. He let her think that he was stressed because of his work because he didn't want to let his mother ever get the air of what he was really worried about. Or rather, who he was really worried about. That would open a box of questions that he had been trying very hard to keep stashed away; even from himself.
The door of the guest room opened and the reason for all his sleepless nights came out of the room.
Zoya Farooqui
If someone had told Asad a few months ago that his entire being would cater around how his house guest was doing, he would have perhaps introduced that person with what his brother liked to call, Mukka Ahmed Khan. But it was true! How in the matter of days, your world can change its axis! Asad Ahmed Khan could well write a dissertation on that topic.
Ever since they had come back from Mangalpur, Asad had been minutely watching Zoya - looking for any signs of lingering injury or any other lasting scars from her time in the place. His guilt of letting such gruesome incident happen to her did not let him sleep peacefully at night. His heart would leap out of his chest every time he saw her trip or tumble even in the slightest. It seemed as if Zoya's safety and well being had become the anchor to all this actions and thoughts.
He knew he needed to control his fears and worry before his mother caught on to him. With the project at work coming to an end, even slightest stress would cause Dilshad to demand answers from him. As Asad made a resolve of deliberately trying to control his hovering, concern and anxiety, Zoya made her way to the dining table and poured herself a glass of water.
It was as if the universe was against Asad letting his mind be at peace.
Zoya gulped down the water in a true hasty Zoya Farooqui fashion and in her hurry, the water went down the wrong way and she started choking and coughing, while she spluttered the water around her.
"ZOYA!" Asad yelled as he ran towards her as soon as he heard her choking and gasping. He yanked the glass out of her hands, not caring where it landed or whether it crashed, and patted her back. Zoya held onto his arms as she tried to get herself under control.
Dilshad frowned and furrowed her brows as she saw the scene unfold. She did not miss the look of absolute panic that had graced her son's face the second Zoya choked on her water. As a matter of fact, the look of sheer fear and worry had still not left Asad's face. He was looking at Zoya with the most anxious expression. Surely, it had not happened to Zoya for the first time. But this time, instead of reprimanding her, her son was fretting over her? The word "astonishing" did not even being to cover how the situation was.
Zoya took a couple of deep breaths and nodded to herself and to reassure Asad that she was fine. She knew very well why Asad had reacted the way he had. She, too, had felt the same sense of helplessness for a fraction of second. It was true that terrors never truly leave you. Zoya shook her head to clear the sudden fog of haunting memories that had over taken her mind and gave Asad, what she hoped was a convincing smile.
Dilshad's eyes widened when she saw the tenderest expression that replaced all the worry and fear on Asad's face. Her confusion mounted.
What was going on?
There sure was something going on that these two are trying to hide. What? Why?
Dilshad crossed her arms across her chest. I am the mother, kids, she thought, let's see long you manage to hide whatever is cooking!

"Bhaijaan?" Najma softly called for Asad as she stood outside the door of his room. It was late into the night and she did not want to alert anyone. After not getting a response for a while, she opened the door, but to only find his room empty. "Where did he go at this time?" Najma wondered to herself.
Shrugging her shoulders, she made her way towards the stairs, to see if her mother knew where he was. As she climbed the stairs, she heard some movement and looked to see her brother sneaking off to his room. She gasped as she realized that he had come out of Zoya's room.
What was he doing there, and at this time?
She made her way to her mother's room; now desperate to get answers to a whole different set of questions that had popped in her head. Knocking softly before opening her mother's bedroom door, Najma entered the room.
"Ammi?" she roused Dilshad up, "Ammi!"
Dilshad cracked open her eyes to see her darling daughter's face looking over her.
"Najam?" she sat up straight, "What's wrong? Are you al right?" she asked, panicking a little.
Najma nodded at her, "I am fine, Ammi."
"Then why are you up? And why did you wake me up?" Dilshad groaned at her.
Najma sat on the bed and whispered, as if she was cooking up a conspiracy, "Ammi! I was working on an important presentation and my laptop died. I couldn't find the charger so I thought I'll go ask Bhaijaan for his."
Dilshad groaned again, "Then go ask you Bhaijaan and let me sleep!"
"Ammi! Let me finish!" Najma huffed at her mother, "I did go to ask him but he was not in his room. I was coming to you to ask if you knew where he had gone. But then I saw him and Ammi, guess what! Bhaijaan was sneaking into his own room!" she gushed, her eyes wide.
Dilshad's eyes also grew wide. Her son and sneaking?
"Najma?" she asked in a knowing tone, "Did you happen to see where he was coming from?"
Najma nodded, her head bobbing with excitement, "That is the best part!"
"Let me guess," Dilshad mused, "Zoya's room?"
Najma gaped her at her mother, "How did you know?"
"Zoya was feeling sick today. She told me that her head was very heavy and Asad was right there." Dilshad pointed out, "And I have been noticing how Asad hovers over her whenever she feels off, even the slightest. They are trying to be very nonchalant about it, but I know that something has changed between the two of them." She confided in her daughter about what she had been taking notice of. Worry lines had appeared on Asad's face as Zoya told Dilshad about her headache.
Najma's faced formed an "O" as she processed the information, "Now that you say so, Ammi, Bhaijaan has been rather jumpy when she as little as winces at something!"
Dilshad and Najma looked at each other and smiled mischievously. Well, if their thoughts were taking them in the right direction, then the walls around Asad Ahmed Khan's heart were perhaps cracking.
