PART - 2
He was there in her dreams again with his ever smiling face. And suddenly everything turned dark and she shouted his name out loud ..."ARMAAN!!"
Geet left the bed knowing she won't be getting any more sleep. She took her shawl wrapping it around herself to get rid of the slight chill of the dawn. It was amazing how the night bird suddenly became someone where turned into a morning person. She set out to take a walk. The campus remains deserted this time and taking a walk alone helps Geet survive the rest of the day.
That day however she was not alone. It was that creepy feeling at the back of her head telling you about being watched. She was almost deciding on going back when a voice said," Ah!! The famous Geet Handa out for her morning stroll!!"
Geet turned back and scowled. It had to be her arch enemy cum best friend Siddharth trying to irritate her!!! Geet told him haughtily,
Geet:" Sid, just get lost. I want to start my morning peacefully!"
Sid:" Geet, you know I would never do that. Irritating you is my birthright."
Geet just glared at him and walked away. She was not that type of a person anymore to engage in a verbal fight. Sid however was not the one to give up. He just followed her and shouted," So, miss Handa? Till when?"
Geet: "Till when what Sid?"
Sid:" Till when are you going to pretend that everything is fine? You need to get out of it Geet. He is no more and we all have to live with it. You know you are not the only one in pain. Geet just let him go, it is high time now."
Geet:"High time? How do you define time for such things Sid? I don't know how you can tell one year or two years is enough to grief. Pain is not something which fades away with time. It increases with time to be precise. "
Sid: "Geet, I am not asking you to stop feeling for him. I know you love him and you can never really forget him. But start living. We can't die with the dead Geet."
Geet: " SID"
Sid: "Geet he is no more. No matter what we do or what you want, he will never come back. Please don't lose yourself. I have already lost one best friend of mine to an accident. Don't make me lose my other one as well. Do you think Armaan would have been happy knowing you are dying without him?"
Geet watched her friend trying again. This had been going on for almost two years now. Sid and meera trying to bring her out of her shell and her not responding to their words.
Today as well she looked at him and said," Honestly Sid, I try. Every day I try and I fail. I will someday but please let me mourn till then."
Sid did not reply. He never did other times as well. Geet walked on as the loneliness gripped her back. She wanted to shut down that rational part of her brain which told her that Sid is right. But then there was always this stupid heart telling her to hold on.
Geet was too disturbed to concentrate where she was going not noticing some weirdo driving his bike at a high speed going to have a head on collision with her. A sudden yank at her upper arm and she was dashed against something warm and hard. The whole thing happened in a fraction of second. The sound of the raging bike passing inches away from her made Geet hold onto her support a little tighter. A sharp intake of breath made her look at the source only to find herself staring at that familiar yet unknown beautiful pair of eyes.
The danger had passed and she was safe. He slowly loosened her hold on him. Only then she noticed her nails had scratched the skin of his forearm drawing slight blood. She was genuinely sorry this time. Looking up she said in a soft apologetic tone,
Geet: "I am really sorry."
Stranger: "You should be. Are you always like this or only with me?"
Geet: "I am genuinely sorry for hurting you. But I don't think you can shout at a stranger for that sir. Anyway I should get going."
Her words made him really look into her eyes and then follow her gaze to his upper arm. Watching the slight scratch mark he said in urgency," Oh!! That is nothing. I wouldn't have noticed even. I was talking about you being prone to dangers. That day I saw you almost falling down into the lake, today I find you getting almost run over by a bike. What is wrong with you miss? Don't you love your life or something?"
Geet watched him asking her questions she had not bothered about for years. Did she not love her life? Well she used to. But after Armaan she really lost interest in life like everything else.
She gave a sad smile and said," Will you believe if I say that I don't love life anymore?"
The stranger was taken aback a bit. It was an unusual answer. He looked up to watch her properly for the first time. She was a beauty to behold. Her deep eyes with a small frown were strangely numb and filled with pain.
He said softly," Don't you think you are being unfair to your close ones??"
His question was different than the one she had expected.
Geet:" Life had not been fair to me. Why should I be fair to others?"
Stranger: "It is wrong way to think you know. If all starts thinking like this the world would really end."
Geet: "The world did not bother about my pain. So why do I need to think of them? I don't want to be great. I just want to be me."
Stranger:" Are you?"
Geet:" Am I what?"
Stranger:" Are you really being yourself? I am a stranger who hardly knows you but I can see something is amiss. "
Geet was stumped. He was right after all. She is not being herself for the past three years. She stayed quiet and looked at him.
Stranger: "I don't know what had gone wrong with you to make you so cynical, so pessimist about life. But life doesn't stop. The worst thing is to give up on your own self. I am sure what happened was bad but I don't think you have lost everything you have. Don't just survive, live."
His words reminded her of Armaan. Armaan had been always very passionate about life. His word always comes back to her.
Geet :"Armaan, how can you be so positive about life all the time?"
Armaan:" Oh Geet!! I know life is short. Maybe tomorrow I won't be there here. I want to live Geet, not just survive."
Geet frowned and looked away. It was painful to even imagine him not to be there to love her, to irritate her, to pamper her and to be with her.
Looking at a frowning Geet armaan asked," What has happened Geet? Are you okay?"
Geet:" Armaan, why are you talking about dying?"
Armaan: "Those are just talks Geet. I am not going to die so soon Geet. I will have a long life enjoying all the random fights, the faking anger of yours, all your tantrums. Then I am going to marry you proclaiming to the world that this wonderful girl is all mine. Then after few years we can have a dozen of kids, my own cricket team."
Geet blushed furiously as she started hitting him. Armaan hugged her tighter saying," Oh!! Geet. I know you would think me mad that I just made a plan of lifetime when we are just in college. But I have dreamt a life around you Geet and I badly want to live it."
Geet whispered back in a soft tone," Armaan, I am only yours. Forever and Always."
"Are you okay?"
The stranger's voice brought her back from the blissful past. She looked up and he said softly," Don't hate your life. There are people who are taken away from face of this earth even before they could live properly. "
His words stirred something deep in her heart. If Armaan had not lived so much but barely survived when he was alive, maybe, letting him go would have been much easier.
She just smiled and nodded. The foggy dawn had turned into a beautiful morning. He turned to walk away. Geet could not help but ask," What is your name?"
Stranger: "Why do you want to know?"
Geet:" You made me realize something others had tried hard to make me accept. I would like to know the name of the person at the very least who just taught me to try living again."
Stranger:" Let's not stretch it. Let's just be two strangers who shared a bit of themselves. Knowing the name would ruin it."
Geet chuckled a bit as she asked," You are a die-hard fan of romanticism, aren't you?
He smiled and said," Maybe, Maybe not. Unlikely we are not meeting anymore. But if we meet we can really talk about each other. Now I am getting late for something. Take care and don't forget to live."
Geet turned back. For the first time after Armaan left she actually found the enthusiasm to actually attend the painting competition finale. She did not know but as if talking to him she felt she went nearer to Armaan rather than going away. She could not deny that the stranger seemed familiar to her yet she can never pinpoint as to exactly what was the connection.
She hummed a song while entering the room and for the first time in three years flashed a beautiful smile to Meera e who had just woke up. Meera was shocked to watch Geet do something normal and Geet just gave a wink before getting inside the washroom. Meera was pleasantly surprised to hear Geet sing like old times.
