Meet the 3 idiots!

Team Kai Po Che! Tells t2 what makes their February 22 friendship film special
Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkumar Yadav and Amit Sadh at The Park on Saturday.
Pictures: Rashbehari Das

Rock On!! maker Abhishek Kapoor and his Kai Po Che! team of Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkumar Yadav and Amit Sadh were in Calcutta on Saturday to talk about their film based on Chetan Bhagat's The 3 Mistakes of my Life. t2 caught up with the four for a fun chat at The Park.

With a week to go for your big release, how are you feeling?

Abhishek Kapoor: I feel that I am suspended mid-air… neither here nor there. It's a very painful feeling, actually. I just want these five days to pass and the film to release. I feel like all of us have come together to deliver a baby!

Sushant Singh Rajput (who plays Ishaan): It's a special film for all of us and we are very excited…

Abhishek: These guys are not nervous at all… mushtandey hain teeno! (Laughs). They have no feelings at all.

Amit Sadh (who plays Omi): I am a little anxious, to be honest. But we've made a beautiful film. Sushant: I am very sure that everyone who watches Kai Po Che! is going to love it!

Is this confidence coming from the standing ovation you got at Berlin last week?

Sushant: We were confident all along, but that has now made us overconfident! (Laughs.)

Amit: It's obviously a great thing if your film gets appreciated on a world platform, but we've always known that it's a great film.

Rajkumar Yadav (who plays Govind): You must be having everyone who comes down to promote their film saying that it's a great film, but trust us when we say that Kai Po Che! is definitely one of the better films you would have seen.

Abhishek: Besides Berlin, we have been having a few screenings for people in the industry and the reactions have been very positive. But Friday is going to be the real test because we make films for the viewer who buys a ticket and walks into a theatre.

How special was the screening at Berlin?

Abhishek: It was fantastic… very overwhelming. It was a big theatre and we were totally sold out. The audience was very dignified and since they were watching a subtitled version, they were discovering it all afresh. Most of them hadn't read The 3 Mistakes of my Life and were reacting to the film for what it is. After the screening, they were so generous with their praise. That's the magic of cinema… how it crosses all barriers and reaches out. Berlin was a life-defining experience for me.

Sushant: We couldn't go along because our suits were not ready! (Laughs out loud.)

Abhishek: Arre, I didn't take them along because they said 'We don't want to go to Berlin… we want to go to Calcutta!'

Chetan Bhagat told t2 that with Kai Po Che!, he is answerable to the one crore readers of The 3 Mistakes of my Life. Do you feel the same?

Abhishek: There will definitely been an audience that has read the book. Chetan Bhagat is a very popular novelist no doubt, but we have moved away from the book and made some changes. In fact, it will be interesting to see how people who have read the book react to the way in which we have interpreted it in the film. Chetan has co-written the screenplay, but I had my own team including Pubali Chaudhuri, who also wrote Rock On!!, and Supratik Sen. We kept Chetan with us because no one knows the book better than him and we were looking at him to come up with inputs. But Chetan the novelist has pretty much said what he had to say in the book; Kai Po Che! is what we have made of his book.

Since this is a story of friendship despite all odds, the chemistry among the three had to have a spark. And with these guys we found that... there was something there. They are a treat to have on any director's set… together, the three are dynamite on screen
— Abhishek Kapoor on Sushant,
Rajkumar and Amit

Did you ever feel that the title Kai Po Che! could alienate a part of the audience?

Abhishek: I wanted a title that summed up the film. I could have called the film 'Teen Yaar' (laughs out loud) to make things simpler, but I didn't want to make things simple. I get 'What does Kai Po Che! mean?' a million times a day, but I am happy because at least people are talking about my film! [Kai po che means 'I have cut' in Gujarati, a term popular during kite-flying competitions.]

Kai Po Che! was in the making for three years. What took so long?

Abhishek: The book has so many threads that to condense it into a screenplay took me two years. Yes, I was a little lazy too, but I would like to put the delay down to the fact that it was a tough book to film (laughs). I didn't want to lose out on any part of the material and yet it all had to come together and make sense in the film. We had to carefully decide what to keep and what to leave out. The (2002 Gujarat) riots are there for sure, but we have made sure that it isn't presented in a manner that will hurt the people affected by it any further.

What was the toughest bit about playing each of your characters?

Amit: To fit into the small-town milieu. Also, Omi is very emotional… he is extremely passionate and possessive about everything in life… his friends, his dreams.

Rajkumar: Perfecting a Gujarati accent in my Hindi was definitely tough.

Sushant: To break the notion that television actors (he played Manav in Ekta Kapoor's Pavitra Rishta) can't act in films.

Did you guys ever want to play any of the other roles?

Sushant: We all auditioned specifically for the roles we eventually played and so there was no point thinking about any other character.

Amit: Well, Sushant and I didn't get the heroine (Vidya, played by Amrita Puri), so yes, we do envy Raj!

Sushant: I got the heroine as my sister and that hurts even more!

Abhishek: We were very sure that since this is a story of friendship despite all odds, the chemistry among the three had to have a spark. And with these guys we found that... there was something there. They are individually great in their respective characters… they each bring something special to their parts; for me, they are not interchangeable. They are a treat to have on any director's set… together, the three are dynamite on screen.

Pick your favourite moments...

Amit: The song Meethi boliyan was the one time we got to freak out… those four-five days of shoot were a lot of fun.

Rajkumar: There is a scene where the three friends have a fight and there you get to see Govind in a different light… this shy and simply guy asserts his presence in a different way for the first time. Also the Vidya-Govind love story is very cute.

Sushant: There is a scene where Ishaan and Omi meet after a gap of a few months and the emotions they feel bring tears to my eyes every time I see that scene.

Amit Trivedi's music is a highlight…

Abhishek: His contribution to the film is fantastic. He doesn't speak much… but he knows what a director wants out of him. I told him that I wanted the songs to be soulful and Indian and he delivered it to the brief. Swanand Kirkire's lyrics have only taken his tunes a notch higher.

What is the first thing you will do after Kai Po Che! releases?

Abhishek: I will wait a while to see the reactions and then take a vacation. Sushant: A holiday for me too!

Amit: All of us are taking a vacation, but February 22 will decide whether I go to Benaras or Barcelona!

Priyanka Roy

'Kai Po Che' a triumph for Indian Cinema

Published: Sun, Feb 17, 2013

Posted by: AVS Newsroom

Let me begin by saying I'm not a film critic, nor am I qualified to be an Industry analyst. Like most people, I enjoy watching movies and admire the art of filmmaking. So why am i writing this? Honestly, it wasn't something I planned, rather a feeling I could no longer ignore. It's been over a week since I watched UTV's 'Kai Po Che' in New York City and I still haven't stopped thinking about it. Yes, it was that impressive and powerful. Before we get into the film, I think it's important to know the man behind the movie.

Writer / Director Abhishek Kapoor isn't new to Indian cinema. On the contrary, he's been around for quite some time, dabbling in various fields before settling on a filmmaking career. His uncle is Legendary movie star Jeetendra. So it seemed natural Kapoor would follow in his acting footsteps. He made his debut in 1995's 'Aashique Mastane', but it wasn't until 1997's 'Uff Yeh Mohabbat', that he received top billing as a leading man. 'Shikaar' followed in 2000 and as you may have guessed by now, none of them created any magic at the box office. Looking back, it probably was a blessing in disguise as it forced him to explore other hidden talents like writing and directing.

Fast forward six years and Abhishek Kapoor reveals his filmmaking side with 'Aryan'. Although many critics and moviegoers appreciated his work, box office success still eluded him. That changed in 2008 with the musically charged, multi layered story of friendship''Rock On!!'. Even today, It's considered by many, including myself, to be a modern day cult classic. It showed us director Farhan Akhtar can act, and one time actor Abhishek Kapoor can direct a commercially successful film without compromise. Here was a man who created from the heart and made progressive cinema for the masses.

Forward another five years and Kapoor is ready with his big screen adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's best selling novel, 'The 3 Mistakes Of My Life'. You'd think after receiving so much critical and commercial acclaim for 'Rock On!!', producers would be lining up at his doorstep. 'Not so', said the director in a recent interview. Many production houses passed on 'Kai Po Che' before UTV finally gave him the green light. After seeing the finished product, I applaud UTV for having the guts to support one of the most important films of our time.

Within the first five minutes of 'Kai Po Che', Abhishek Kapoor pulls you into his world. The film starts in the present, but flashes back to the early 2000's - a time when India was growing, times were changing and the economy was about to boom. It's during this emergence, we meet Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput), Omi (Amit Sadh) and Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav). Three Ahmedabad boys who are the best of friends and ready to embark on their entrepreneurial journey. Each one has his own unique perspective on life and they make no bones about voicing their opinions. But what they have in common is unconditional brotherly love for each other. This is the type of friendship I used to know. When friends were more than just names on facebook. True friends you relied on, stood up for and were the fabric of your being.

Like you, I was also wondering why Kapoor cast new faces instead of relying on more bankable stars. But after watching the movie, I completely agree with his decision. Nobody could have played these three characters or any character in the movie, other than the people that were chosen. Adding known stars would only increase the baggage of perception and stereotypes they bring with them. Here we have fresh actors who rely completely on the sincerity and honesty of performance. And boy what performances!! Omi played by Amit Sadh is the businessman. He's smart with money, but not so much when it comes to love and relationships. Govind essayed by Raj Kumar Yadav is the quiet politician. A loveable character who speaks volumes without saying much. This is especially true in the second half when his eyes do most of the talking. Now, we come to Ishaan played by TV actor Sushant Singh Rajput. He is a breath of fresh air. A street smart guy who wears his heart on his shoulder. Through him, we see our imperfections and are reminded that sometimes it pays to take the road less travelled. Sushant is a revelation! He is brilliant and his performance will be hailed as one of the finest of the year. Trust me, he's got superstar written all over him.

What happens next is'life. Abhishek skillfully weaved in many important events that shook Gujarat and the people of India. Without making any political statements or spending unnecessary time explaining each incident, he manages to get the severity of every situation across. The story remains focused on the friends and how the changing world is affecting their lives. Natural disaster, cricket and communal riots play important roles at different stages. I don't want to give too much away, but there are times you will be smiling one minute and crying the next.

Technically, 'Kai Po Che' is flawless. You know everyone has done their job well when you become a part of the world they've created. Art direction, cinematography, background score, writing, vfx, everyone is at the top of their game. The film has three songs composed by Amit Trivedi. All of them perfect blend into the narrative and are used in the background. If you're not already a fan of 'Manjha', 'Meethi Boliyan' and 'Shubhaarambh', you will be after watching the movie.

You can clearly see Abhishek Kapoor is in full control here. With 'Rock On!!', he created a new genre in Hindi cinema, with 'Kai Po Che' he redefines cinema as we know it. It's commercial, real, relevant, entertaining and engaging all at the same time. Kapoor is a master filmmaker who uses his talent responsibly. He knows nothing hits home, then home itself. While some are busy trying to copy the west, he's telling Indian stories with style and finesse that can easily compete on the world stage. Non South Asians will witness our culture in it's purest, rawest form. I recommend you google Gujarat Earthquake, Cricket in India and 2002 Gujarat Violence before you go in to see this movie. You will need to know the severity of each event to truly understand the impact it has on the characters. If there is any criticism, it's the lack of background information for people unfamiliar to the region.

In the end, I left the theater with a heavy heart and an overwhelming sense of pride. The last 20 minutes are heart pounding, heartbreaking and a satisfying conclusion to the two hour journey. I haven't read Chetan Bhagat's book, but I know the film is very different from the novel. I'm extremely pleased to see Indian films and filmmakers breaking new ground. If anything, that should be enough reason for everyone to support this movie. 'Kai Po Che' is sensible cinema that entertains. It's material that hits home and stays with you long after you leave the theater. Easily, one of the best of the year. If not, the last 10 years!

Kai Po Che passes Ambani screen test

Ronnie Screwvala arranged a special screening at Antilla two days prior to the premiere show

Even before the premiere, a private screening of Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che was organised for Mukesh Ambani at Antilla this weekend. The film, shot extensively in Gujarat, highlights the entrepreneurial flair of the Gujarati clan. And this seems to be the reason behind the tycoon's keen interest in the film.
A source told Mumbai Mirror: "Being a Gujarati, the very title of the film 'Kai Po Che' got him hooked. He had heard a lot about the film and after seeing the promos, he expressed his desire to watch the film at the earliest." And it was hardly an issue arranging a special screening for the richest man of India. Besides, he has a great rapport with the producer of the film, Ronnie Screwvala.
A source said: "Ambani has a 20-seater mini theatre, equipped with all the latest technologies, at Antilla. The film was digitally uploaded to the system through a new technology that allows only one-time viewing."
Ambani watched the film with his wife Nita and according to sources, some of the visuals made him nostalgic about his family in Gujarat. The premiere of the film will be held at a suburban theatre today and the guest list includes Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, among others. Along with the Mumbai premiere, the film will also be screened in a single-screen theatre in faraway Jaipur. The screening is specially organised for Aamir Khan, who is shooting PK in the pink city.

interview Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che brings to the screen Chetan Bhagat's tale of the hopes and aspirations of middle-class India, finds MINI ANTHIKAD CHHIBBER

TWO STATESThe film is derivative, but can stand independent of the book, says KapoorPhoto: AP

While Hollywood is making all these super movies out of sub-continental classics — Life of Pi , Midnight's Children, and The Reluctant Fundamentalist , we are not lagging behind with book adaptations. So what if our author of choice is Chetan Bhagat? After the hilarious (whenever Chatur's speech comes on telly, it is difficult not to grin) and super successful 3 Idiots based on Bhagat's Five Point Someone , comes Kai Po Che based on Bhagat's 2008 novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life .

Ahead of its February 22 release, the film, directed by Abhishek Kapoor, had its premiere at the 63rd Berlinale in the Panorama section. The film, like the book, tells the story of three young men growing up in Gujarat. Set against the backdrop of the 2002 riots, it tells a charming tale of the hopes and aspirations growing up in an economy that is opening up and the seismic (both literal and figurative) shifts this kind of economic growth brings with it.

Abhishek, who wrote and directed the groovy Rock On!! spoke of the challenges of adapting Bhagat's novel. "Chetan approached me with the book. I had to decide how much to keep, how much to take out. If I was taking something out, then I had to put something in, which would have an effect on the whole movie. The film is derivative, but can stand independent of the book." While 3 Idiots had an A-list cast — Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Kareena Kapoor, Kai Po Che is powered by youngsters. Telly star Sushant Singh Rajput plays the live wire Ishaan, whose life revolves around cricket and his friends. Amit Sadh plays the easily influenced Omi, while Raj Kumar Yadav ( Gangs of Wasseypur II ) plays Govind, the entrepreneur in the making who has big dreams. Amrita Puri plays Ishaan's sister and Govind's love interest Vidya.

"While casting, I was looking for energy and innocence," Abhishek says. "Stars come with their own baggage. I did approach a few stars and they refused. I understand where they are coming from. The age bracket I was looking at, the stars are just establishing themselves and would be wary of accepting a three- hero project. I don't take it personally if stars say no. So many actors refused Rock On!! Arjun Rampal agreed to work in the film and got a National Award! So it all works out for the best."

Though both Rock On!! and Kai Po Che deal with friendship, bonding and growing up, Abhishek insists the movies come from different places. "I wrote Rock On!! . It came from me, while Kai Po Che is an adaptation. The distance between the upper class and the middle class in India is so vast, that it might as well be another country! In Rock On!! , the characters and responses were cerebral while Kai Po Che is in a more reactive space. In fact, I consider myself lucky to be able to make two films with similar themes in two very different ways."

Detailing is an important part of the film — be it the basic mobile phones of 2002, the Basic Instinct poster or even the political party symbols. "Nothing is in a frame by accident. As far as the party symbols and flags go, yes we didn't want to offend people. Kai Po Che is about friendship and people. It is not about who did what. Enough has been said; now it is time to look for some sort of healing. It is time to forgive and forget, or at least, move on. Ishaan is the purest character in the film. He is not preachy, his loss is emblematic of all of us losing a vital part of our self. The movie doesn't end on a sad note — rather it ends on an optimistic one, of there being hope for the future in the form of the batsman Ali. His cricket debut at the end of the film is emblematic of keeping dreams alive. This is not a Bollywood film, it is an Indian film. Politics, religion, cricket and movies — it is my interpretation of India."

(The writer is in Berlin at the invitation of Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan)
