Chapter 2

"When the past comes knocking, don't answer.

It has nothing new to tell you"

They took a stop on the way to visit the Somnath temple and started their journey again. Ravi asked him the question that was bugging her for a while now.

"So even Masi thinks I am returning for them?" She asked him tentatively

"Not just your Masi, it's your sister, our neighbors, and the whole Pandya Parivar. Yesterday Suman Ben and Dhara paid us a visit. Suman Ben threatened Prafulla that she should keep you away from her son and she won't let us live if his marriage breaks off due to us. Naturally, a fight broke out between them." He informed her sympathetically

Raavi groaned...

Suman Pandya was livid. Just when her son was ready to move on and settle down that 'Markundi Gai' decided to make her appearance and mess with her son's life again?

Shiva suffered a lot after Raavi left Somnath. She and the whole Pandya Parivar was a witness to that. She never thought that Raavi leaving him behind would affect him so adversely. It was days after Raavi left she realized that Shiva was looking for her. She heard Krish gossiping with Dhara as she tried to shush him.

Suman called her son back and made him promise he would not look for her again. And her son listened to her like always. He stopped his search. Suman was happy now she can get started on a bride search again for her son. Now she can have at least have one daughter-in-law as per her wishes. When it came to her son's marriages, she never got any say in selecting the bride herself.

Yes, Krish was there but then he was the youngest and she was not sure by the time they decided to fix his marriage if she would be in good condition. She had been stuck in this wheelchair for years now. Not to mention his affair with Janardan's other daughter. If one was not enough. She can only be thankful to God that the matter got stopped from escalating.

Gautam married Dhara against her wishes. Dev's marriage with Rishita, the less said the better. But Shiva and Raavi...Suman blamed Dhara for this. Who told her to go ahead and take such a big decision? If Dev left her at the altar it didn't mean her Shiva had to sacrifice his life and get tied down to that baboon.

She let it slide, after all till now whatever Dhara did it was for their good. She treated her brother-in-law like her own children. She had the right. But it turned out to be disastrous. Raavi could not handle her son and did one mistake after another. So finally when Raavi left she was ecstatic.

Shiva agreed with her immediately. The search went on for a month or so when she started noticing the changes. Somehow every girl who came to meet him would deny him. He started missing out on their family lunch and dinner, sometimes even breakfast. She would rarely see him in the house. Whenever she asked Gautam and Dev they always told her he was working...

Then started complaints from their neighborhood. Shiva punched someone today for some silly reason to Shiva had a full-blown fight with a few boys from around. The bride's search came to a halt as whispers broke out on the streets "who will marry such a guy? How did Raavi manage to stay with him? No wonder Prafulla wanted her niece away from him..."

She confronted him directly, "Is this because of Raavi?"

"No Ma, I am happy that Chipkali left. Finally, I am getting the much-needed peace."

She was satisfied with his answer after all Shiva had always been an angry bull all his life. And then one night when Dhara was taking her towards her room, she saw him sitting alone in Veranda. She silently motioned Dhara to stay back and moved towards him. Upon her touch, he looked at her startled and then unbeknownst to him a lone tear rolled down his eye. She didn't need to be a rocket scientist to know that this was indeed about Raavi...

Gradually, with the help of her family, they managed to bring him back on track. Then on they saw Shiva who was a mere shell of his previous self. He was the same boy, her dearest son but he had lost the spark. Finally, when she met Disha again a few months back and got to know that she is still unmarried, hope sparked in her. She was the girl Shiva agreed to get married to when Raavi was still there, she can bring him out of his shell.

Shiva agreed without any questions, the way he always did. But there was no change in his behavior. At times Disha complained to her that he did not give her enough time. She assured Disha that he will come around after his marriage. To pacify her she got them engaged.

Everything was going well. As well as it can go with all their current problems when they heard the news of Raavi's return...and that morning she saw, Shiva going about his work with a spring in his step...no she would not let her step a foot in her home again...

"Ma is very angry, Gaumbi." Dhara looked on worriedly

"I know" he sighed "do you really think Raavi is coming back for Shiva?" Gaumbi asked her unsure

"Of course Gaumbi, isn't it obvious? She decided to come back just when she got to know that Shiva has agreed for the marriage and must have realized her mistake now."

"I mean it's been a while now. She didn't keep in touch with us. Do you still think she is going to come back? What if she really has moved on?"

"Don't you know Raavi? She was stuck on Dev for years. And then she fell for Shiva and tried so many ways to be with him. How can she move on so soon? Raavi is a childish and immature girl. Ma is right, I made the mistake of marrying them but not anymore. I will not let her step a foot in our home. She will not make my Shiva miserable again." Dhara took a protective stance.

Gautam wanted to contradict her, Shiva has been miserable since Raavi left. If anything Raavi's come-back news had brought some glow to his face. But he refrained, he didn't want to argue with her, not when Dhara and Ma both were set on one mission #bhagaoRaavi. And anyway he didn't have time and energy to act upon it. He had to clean the mess his youngest brother made.

Somehow when everyone was focused on their lives. Krish had gone ahead and fell in love with Kirti. He stole from the house, bunked classes, failed in exams. When both families got to know about their affair, they opposed it. Everyone was against it but one who supported them. Rishita and Kirti's Aunt. He should have known that woman was the devil in disguise.

Janardan decided to send Kirti away for studies. But her Bua stopped him. She asked Krish to prove his love. She instigated him enough to make him do something utterly stupid. He gave away his share in Pandya store and house in Janardan's name.

She played them all. Kirti was sent away to another college. She would stay with their relatives. So Janardan had a strict watch on Kirti, making her break all ties with Krish.

He made use of part of his share to bring the sale of the Pandya store further down. And offered to give them the share of their house back on one condition. Rishita will own that share...

This did not settle well with Dev. Rishita and Dev started facing problems because of this.

Rishita questioned them "they can manage if the part of the house is owned by their sons but if it's their daughter in law they have issues? Don't they consider her as their own?"

The fight escalated Rishita vs Family. She decided to leave the house in anger. Dhara tried to stop her but Rishita did not listen, she fell... The miscarriage was a big blow to their relationship. Almost on the verge of breakdown, Dev and his family agreed to transfer Krish's share to Rishita's name. She came back, but they were not a happy couple anymore.

The issue of the house was somewhat solved but they still had to save their store. Their father's dream. Their legacy. Saving it seemed like an impossible task what with increasing loan amounts that they borrowed from the Market. Janardan's interference and continuous drop in sales, Shiva's lavish marriage on the top, due to his mother's stubborn stance. If it goes on like this, they may just have to mortgage their home.

Recently he got to know that there was a well-known investor who was looking to invest in a new line of business around this area. He had a set of ideas. All he had to do was present them. Only problem was Janardan was trying to get this investor to invest in his business. He had already met the investor using his contacts. On the other hand, Gaumbi could only present the first set of an idea to their team.

He needs money, if he achieves this, he can definitely solve all their problems and can open at least one more branch of Pandya store...

Prafulla did the aarti before letting her in and hugging her.

"My Bacchi!"

Anita moved ahead "Welcome back Raavi" they hugged

Prafulla pushed Anita. "Where have you been? Don't you eat properly? You look so thin?" Prafulla cried out.

"Let her rest, Prafulla. You can question her later" her husband said shaking his head

"Yes go ahead take some rest. I will call you down sometime for lunch" Prafulla managed to wipe a wayward tear.

"Maasi! Don't cry, see I am here now right?" Raavi held her shoulders

Prafulla had a soft smile as Anita led Raavi away. "Did you speak with her?"

"Yes. She said she is not back for Shiva and I trust her" her husband answered

"Wow, Raavi! You look beautiful" Anita commented

"What beautiful! I look the same" Raavi laughed at her

"Yes, but something has changed. Your style, there is a glow to your face. I heard you work somewhere? Where is it?"

"Let me freshen up, we will speak later"

"Okay..." Anita gasped "what is this you came by plane?" She was looking at the tag attached to her bag

"Umm...yes"

"Wow, your company must pay you a lot of money for you to afford a plane ticket. So what's the plan?"

"About what?" Raavi frowned

"How are you going to stop Shiva's marriage this time?" Anita wiggled her eyebrows suggestively

Raavi's smile faltered

"Anita di I am not here for Shiva. I am not going to interfere in his life and please leave. I want to rest" she gestured towards the door.

"Sure" Anita gave her a disbelieving look and left

Gaumbi and Dev were working on a presentation leaving Shiva to handle the shop. Krish was sitting at the cash counter studying and helping Shiva with finances. He should have passed college by now but with the drama that happened between him and Kirti...he failed. Krish was ashamed he brought so many problems for his family and he lost his love.

His results were another story altogether. He failed and Gaumbi who usually was a calm person by nature lost his cool. Now he attended college and came to the store to help and study under Shiva's watchful eye. Then four of them would return home in the evening.

He observed Shiva who was furiously packing the ingredients. He was pissed Krish could tell and why not it's been three days that Raavi was back but none of them had seen her. She never even passed their shop

"I saw her today. She was sitting in a cafe nearby our college." Krish spoke into the silence

Shiva did not say anything so Krish kept quiet and started studying before a hand was forcefully slapped on the counter

"So what should I do? I don't care if Raavi is sitting in a cafe or in a telephone booth I don't care."

Krish wanted to point out that he did not take Raavi's name but kept quiet as Shiva continued

"I am sure you both must have met each other. She must have asked you to eat that stupid Bhel or Pani puri with her. And you like a fool must have followed her. If Ma gets to know about this..."

"We didn't actually. She was there with her friends. I did not wish to disturb her and she didn't see me. Anyways it's just she looked different..."

"What do you mean by different?"

"I don't know. Same but different..."

"Whatever. I Don't Care" he half-shouted at him and went back to work.

Krish got up "I am taking a tea break" he turned to Shiva once again,

"I think you should go and meet her, try to solve your problems. She was not the only one at fault you know. You are lucky you have got another chance even after so many goof ups. I didn't even get a second chance"

When Rishita returned from the office the first thing she saw was her fuming Sasuma and unpleasant-looking Disha sitting beside her with Dhara loitering around them in uncertainty.

"What happened now?" Rishita rolled her eyes as she saw the trio.

As soon as Dhara saw her she called out "arey Rishita you are back. I will bring tea for you"

It looked as if she was waiting for the opportune moment to escape.

Rishita followed Dhara in the kitchen and whispered "what happened now? Why is she angry? Did Raavi stop by?"

"No... it's nothing" Dhara avoided looking at her

Rishita frowned, Three days and no sign of Raavi? They were expecting her to make a ruckus over Shiva's marriage on her arrival. Everyone was ready with their own set of lectures about what all Raavi did wrong?

"That's odd. Then why is Ma angry? Bhabhi?" Rishita was persistent

"Umm...few of our neighboring ladies came to visit. Ma had called them, you know, for tea and to discuss Shiva's marriage details and to make Disha's introduction..."

"What? Uff...Ma...what was the need? So why is she angry now?"

"The discussion started from Shiva and Disha's marriage preparations, but quickly the direction of the topic changed to Raavi. And for half an hour or so they all discussed how Raavi has been successful in her career. She seems to be earning quite a good amount of money. how she bought many gifts for Prafulla, Anita, and others and how her life seems much improved after she left Shiva. How Prafulla plans to find an NRI groom for Raavi...and..." Dhara quietened suddenly

"And?" Rishita probed her

"And Raavi gifted gold bangles to Prafulla Mami. The same bangles for which Mami and Shiva fought over. The exact replica"

"Woah, all of this is done by Raavi? I want to meet her. Where does she work?"

"Don't say that. Ma is already angry with all the Raavi Jaap. Although I don't understand, is Raavi really changed that much. She didn't even come to meet us or did not even call me once"

Before their discussion can continue they heard a shrill call from their Sasuma and both ran in the direction of the living room.

"O Bhagode ki Beti"

Dhara and Rishita stopped to see Gaumbi, Dev, Shiva and Krish standing before them. Krish was telling them how he had seen Raavi in a cafeteria with her friends...

"Ma" Rishita called out tentatively

"This is what she wants to do then? She wants to show us how she is happy without us. How has she achieved great success? How is she better than us? Is that it?" Suman spoke to herself but everyone heard her

"Start preparation for a grand party. We will call it..." Suman searched for a word

"Engagement party" Krish provided helpfully

"Yes, and Bhagode ki Beti, you will come with me. We are going to visit Prafulla's house. We will show them we are far better without Raavi..."

"Me?" Dhara looked at Gaumbi who already looked tense.

"Ma, we are facing a money crunch. Is that necessary?"

"If you can't arrange money for this party then tell me I will sell my jewelry. But I want to throw this party in honor of my favorite son and would-be daughter-in-law. The whole Somnath should talk only about this party in days to come. It will happen the day after tomorrow. Start the preparations"

"I will manage Ma" Gaumbi backed out defeated

Disha beamed and turned to Shiva to see him storming towards his room in anger

"I will come Ma...to Mami's house for the invitation. Dhara Bhabhi has too much work already" Rishita interrupted before Suman could instruct Dhara.

"Fine. We will go tomorrow then" Prafulla agreed

Raavi was sitting in a Starbucks, working on her laptop. She has a meeting scheduled in Rajkot with one of her clients. She had already informed Maasi, it was supposed to be a one-day trip. She had already booked a car for travel. Anita wanted to go with her but she declined.

Nowadays Anita took more than necessary interest in her work. She could not work at home in peace. Hence she has chosen this place. It was a little away from her home. But that gave her a chance to avoid Anita's constant questions and the possibility of her running into any of the Pandya Family members. Plus since her return, there was always an inflow of her neighboring aunties...

Her Masi was tremendously happy with her since she had gifted her those bangles and as promised, Mami did not do a detour to Pandya's house. But that did not stop her from calling neighboring aunties and showing off the gifts. Indeed, you can't change the core of the person ever...

The cafe near her college was a risky place. Yesterday she saw Krish. She knew he saw her but she deliberately ignored him...This was an important client, she had to complete this project...

"Hey, Raavi!"

Raavi looked up to find her college friend Vishal standing before her

"Mind if I join you?"

"Hi Vishal, come on sit. You don't have to be so formal" Raavi smiled at him as she closed her laptop. It was almost evening time. She had to head for home anyway

They talked for a while. Raavi decided to leave for home when Vishal stopped her.

"I wanted to speak with you" he sounded nervous

Ravi looked at him expectantly

"Raavi will you marry me?" He posed a question and before she could say anything produced a ring box before her.

"What? What is this? Why so suddenly?" Raavi was shocked and confused

"I like you since our college days. I...never dared to propose as you were spoken for Dev...and then you got married to Shiva...I did not get a chance. But now I know that you are ready to get married again. I don't want to lose this opportunity" he proposed

"Who told you I am ready to get married again?" Raavi asked him wide-eyed

"Umm... almost everyone knows...your Masi is looking for NRI grooms for you. Now I know I am not NRI yet but I have got the job opportunity there and will leave for Mexico within six months or so..."

"Vishal" Raavi stopped him "you are a nice guy but..." she started gently "there is some misunderstanding, I am not marrying anyone. I have to leave. Excuse me" Raavi left in a hurry...

Raavi could not believe her Masi would do something like this. Actually, she did. Masi had tried this before...it was her fault that she kept quiet. She should have said something beforehand...she was just looking for a right moment

She paid the cab driver and hurried inside the house

"Maasi" she called out loudly. Her Mausapa and Masi came running

"What happened?" they looked worried

"Who told you to look for marriage proposals for me. I don't want to get married" she questioned Masi angrily

"Then what do you want to do? Keep pining for Shiva your whole life after he marries another girl like your idiot sister Anita?" Her Mami questioned back

"No but you should have asked me first" Raavi was frustrated

"What is there to ask? When there will be a suitable proposal we will let you know. Don't we have that right?" this time it was her Mausapa who agreed with her Masi

Raavi was flabbergasted, usually, it was her and Mausapa against Mami...

"No, but..."

"But what Raavi? Look I already have one daughter sitting on our head without marriage. Making her life miserable behind that Pandya Parivar. I am not going to let my other child go the same way. You know what today Suman came with her daughter in law Rishita, she came to mock us that none of my daughters can have marital bliss while her family will live happily ever after...and called us to..to...that good for nothing Shiva's engagement party. I want to find the best boy for you. I will show that Pandya Parivar. I will show her who is happier..." Prafulla went on angrily

"Masi" Raavi held her shoulders and gave her a little shake to stop her rant

"Listen to me, please. I can't get married" Raavi started

"Look Raavi..."

"Because I am already married" Ravi cut her off

Everyone was silent for some time when Mausapa questioned her "already married?" To make sure he heard her right.

Raavi nodded her head and gazed at Praffulla who suddenly hit her forehead with her palm

"Raavi, you and Shiva are already divorced. Just because you decide to wear Mangalsutra and sindoor in his name does not mean you become his wife. Come out of your fantasy land. He is marrying another girl for god's sake"

Raavi took a deep breath "His name is Viraj"
