'S' - A Success Story

The secret of popularity is not only limited to 'K' serials alone. Now, 'S' seems to be headed down the successful lane as well

Be it Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Siddhanth, Special Squad, Super Sale, Shanno Ki Shaadi, Shararat or Saarrthi, the 'S' shows are well-accepted and popular. What's so different about them? None of them are the 'K' series with a saas-bahu angle. Yet, they are popular! Breaking the tradition of 'K', 'S' has emerged as the next trendsetting letter. They are trendy, breaking the monotony and look at tried-and-tested themes with a fresh perspective!

Taking the idea further, the stars behind some of the most popular characters, have an 'S' factor as well. The very Indian wife, the ideal bahu of tellyhood, Smriti 'Tulsi' Irani, and her not-far-behind counterpart, Sakshi 'Parvati' Tanwar are cases to the point.

And who can ignore the inimitable Shekhar Suman (The Great Indian Laughter Champions and The Great Indian Comedy Show) who can do a unique take on politicians, stars an socialites with panache. Sachin and Supriya, the real life jodis, have proved that they are not only great actors but good dancers as well.

In other serials, the characters that add to the charm are 'S'mash hits as well. Sujal from Kahin To Hoga, Kumkum's Sumit and Saroj in Bhabhi can be recalled in this respect.

So, what's the story behind a 'K' or 'S' or any other letter in the alphabet that seem so intrinsically linked with our serials and characters? Astrologically, a person's name is not only their calling card, it also determines how their life will unfold. One of the techniques is the 'Kabbalah'. This ancient Hebrew system is a letter-and-number analysis that helps you discover what the mathematics of your name add up to in terms of work, relationships and spiritual energies.

The way you spell a name can bring the person fortunes or ill-luck. Numerology is another aspect to the names which has made many of the stars add a letter or delete one, so what if it doesn't sound exactly right?

While we are at it, another 'S'tar - Shah Rukh Khan's birthday is round the corner. You could wish him here and you might just get to meet him and hear his success story in person!

So, after 'K' and lately, 'S', what will be the next letter to create the right interest on television? Maybe 'Q'?

Groove the Nach Baliye Way

Star One's new programme, Nach Baliye is one of its kind to hit the television screen, where you can watch your favourite television stars shake a leg with their real life partners and all for a good cause. Our reporter, who will be giving you exclusive updates for the next 10 weeks, gives us a first person account of her experience on the sets of the show.

I have always been fascinated by the world of television. This being my first big assignment, I was all stirred up to visit the sets of Nach Baliye and interact with the glittering stars of the television world.

My nervousness was easily palpable as I reached the sets way before time. I watched the stars emerge out of their luxurious cars and go scudding into their vanity vans. As I trudged along to take a look at the set, I was amazed to see the large and vibrant stage all ready to welcome the star couples.

My interaction with the choreographers gave me a great deal of information about the process of preparation undergone by the star couples. But the best was yet to come, a tte--tte with the participants.

I started my rendezvous with the effervescent Sachin and Supriya. The talented duo amazed me with their down-to-earth nature. The couples seemed to have set apart the preconceived notion of celebrities being snooty. Manini and Mihir Mishra are an exemplification of this.

Things could only get better with Parmeet Sethi and Archana Puran Singh adding that bit of drollery to the conversation. However, on the other hand, there was Shilpa and Apurva Agnihotri who with some scintillating talks managed to seek a balance.

What was worth taking a note of is that in spite of the competition being only an hour away, the blemishes of nervousness were nowhere to be seen. Neeru and Amit appeared absolutely at ease while they waited for the call to hit the dance floor.

Having completed my interviews with the remaining contestants, I got myself a place among the audience to watch the couples put their act together. There was a thunderous applause as the hosts Sangita Ghosh and Shabbir stepped on stage

The temperature in the studio seemed to be rising as the contestants performed to the sensuous themes with a load of oomph. Every performance was captivating.

The contestants looked fabulous, clad in eye-catching outfits designed by Anna Singh. With the audience cheering for their favourite contestants, the mood in the studio was completely upbeat.

My experience on the sets of Nach Baliye was overwhelming. Foot tapping music, cheering crowd and brilliant performances and a vibrant setup only made my heart say, "Nach Baliye."

Saahil or Sumeet?
The man from the South who is creating the laughs on Sarabhai vs Sarabhai

A Tamalian who has worked in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati theatre. Meet Sumeet Raghavan, a complete Mumbaikar, whose stint with acting started when his mother came across a paper cutting and which led to his joining a workshop by Ms Shulbha Deshpande.

Sumeet did many small roles on television, but his first major break was in 1985 on Doordarshan, where he played the title role of a detective in a serial, Faster Fane. After that, there was a lull in his acting career and during that time he was a dubbing artiste for seven years. In 1998, he got a break in the serial Hadh Kar Di, which was a comedy on Zee TV. Since then, there has been no looking back.

He has also acted in over 100 commercials. The first advertisement he shot for was Rasna - directed by Kundan Shah. He has also featured in McDonalds and Bajaj campaigns, among others. Advertising, Sumeet feels is not a career choice, but a great option commercially, as he feels the remuneration is good.

Sumeet is currently enjoying all the attention and praise he is getting for his hit serial Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, in which he plays the role of Junior Sarabhai, Saahil. Sumeet feels his character, Saahil, in the show is completely unlike him as Saahil is too good to be true, whereas Sumeet is quite real. Sumeet is married to a theatre actor, Chinmayee, who is currently touring the US doing Marathi theatre. They have two children, a son aged eight and a daughter aged five years, who love watching their father on Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai.

The gorgeous Sonal talks about the person behind the characters she plays

She was born in Surat, but Sonal is a Delhite at heart. She was educated at Spring Dales School. During that time, Sonal was actively involved in theater, but never thought of herself as an actress. So, she majored from Delhi University with English Honors.

She worked for an advertising agency, McCann as a copywriter where she worked on campaigns for Nestle, Nike etc. She went on to learn filmmaking and also assisted director Pradeep Sarkar. She has done more than 20 commercials like Nestle' Bar One, Aaj Tak, Dabur Hajmola. She has also worked in many music videos with some big names like Euphoria, Pankaj Udhas, Jazzy B, Bally Sagoo and Harbhajan Mann.

Her first television stint was in the Star Plus' weekly Saara Aakash where she played the popular character of Sanjana. The character rose to popularity especially when the viewers found out that Sanjana had a negative characterization. Her portrayal of Sanjana in Saara Aakash redefined the role of vamps in Indian television as for the first time, a vamp never wore loud make-up or made evil faces. She also worked for about 40 episodes in Kasautii Zindagii Kay.

Currently, Sonal plays the lead role in Hotel Kingston on Star One. As Shelly, she feels, she has again redefined the role of quintessential television heroine. She isn't the usual nave heroine you see in most serials, but is a complete brat (which, quite actually resembles her in real life).

Sonal Segal has worked in a Hinglish film called You Dumsie Me opposite Gautam Rode (who also features in Ba Bahu Aur Baby). Sonal has never planned her life and wants to do good quality roles in the future, be it in television or films. Many fans feel that she is the sexiest woman on television and would love to know if Sonal has someone special. Sonal prefers to keep mum on her personal life only revealing that, she is currently single, but not ready to mingle.

Favorite show on telly: Friends

Three words that describe yourself: Fun, impulsive and alive

More laughs...
We can't get enough of Sunil Pal. So we caught up with him to know more about his work till date and his plans for the future.

Sunil aap kahaan ke rehne waale ho?
Main originally Chandrapur District, Mursa gaav, Maharashtra ka huun. Lekin phir maine wahaan se Hinghat jaa kar aage ki padhaai complete ki.

Toh aap ko bachpan se thi yeh comedy aur mimicry ka shauk?
Haan, main school programmes mein hissa leta tha, speech, song, drama, sab karta tha. Aur apne teachers ki nakal utarta tha.

Toh aap toh bade star the school ke. Sab aap ko bolte honge ki iska nakal utaro, uska nakal utaaro…
Haan, dost bahut the, toh maze mein karta tha. Pata nahi tha ki usi ke kaaran aaj iss mukaam par pahuchunga.

Uske baad aapne kya kiya?
Kisi ne mujhe kaha ki Nagpur ki ek orchestra - Tony Orchestra - mein kuch comedian ka kaam hai. Toh main nikal pada Nagpur ki aur. Maine mimicry start kiya - Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny Deol, Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin Shah aur Gulshan Grover ki awaazon ko nakal karke.

Toh aur koi actor ka awaaz aap nikaal paaye baad mein? Dheere dheere main kareeb 15-20 actors ki awaaz nikaal pane laga.

Aap Mumbai kab aaye?
1995 mein mujhe laga ki mujhe Mumbai aana chahiye kyunki yahaan par ek bada platform mil sakta hai.

Toh Mumbai aakar kuch sudhaar aaya? Koi naye offers miley?
Mumbai mein mera koi pehchaan wala nahi tha, toh main teen saal footpath par soya, struggle kiya bahut… I will never forget those years.

Toh aap ko break kahaan se mila?
Mujhe kisi ne Cineyug ka number diya. Maine audition ki aur unhe mera item achcha laga. Main khud hi apne jokes likhta huun. Uske baad mujhe Amir Khan ke saath Lagaan world tour pe filler ke taur par audition ka call aaya. Bas duniya badal gayi. Amir Khan Sahab ne jab mujhe kaha ki unko behad pasand aaya mera item, I was so happy I could not believe. Phir Shah Rukh Khan sahab ke saath bhi maine shows kiye. Unko bhi mere programmes bahut achche lage.

Kya baat hai! Aapki toh duniya hi palat gayi. Amir Khan aur Shah Rukh ke saath kaam karke kaisa laga?
Dono ne mujhe bahut hi protsahan diya aur itna encourage kiya ki mere har performance achha hota hi gaya. Aur uske baad maine Sonu Nigam world tour bhi kiya, 2 1/2 maheene England, US, Holland aur kul milaakar, 30-32 shows kiye.

Aapke future plans kya hai?
Abhi maine TGILC mein aane se pehle kuch films sign kiye the. Unka completion hoga. Jaise Arjun Rampal aur Diya Mirza ke saath Dil Saccha Chehra Jhoota aur Feroz Nadiadwala ka Phir Hera Pheri.

Aapke roles ke bare mein kuch bataiye?
Roles comic hain lekin faltoo comedy nahi hai. Ekdum sensible aur structured comedy hai. Logon ko achcha lagna chahiye.

Aapke favourite comedian Johnny Lever hain. Unke bare mein kuch kahiye?
He is a genius. Main aur kya kahoon abhi?

Aapke family ke bare mein kuch bataiye.
Mere family mein mere mata, pita, do behne hai. Aur do saal tak mein shaadi ke bare mein sochna nahi chahta.

Abb TGILC ke bare mein kuch bataiye. Yeh jo Star One ka programme hai, isne desh ke kaafi saare ummeedwar artistes ko protsahan diya hai, encourage kiya hai bahut.

Kabhi socha ki aap jeetoge?
Kabhi lagta nahi tha ki jeetoonga. Sochta tha in kalakaaron ke beech bas tik jaaoon toh khush ho jaaoonga.

Judges ke bare mein kuch bataiiye?
Sidhuji aur Shekhar ji apne apne field mein anubhavi kalakar hai. Aur unse jab standing ovation milta hai toh aisa lagta hai jaisa sab kuch kaayam kar diya hai maine.

Sab se bada khatra kisse tha aapko TGILC mein?
Competition toh sakt tha, sab hi contestants se… lekin Raju Srivastava ji great kalakaar hai aur genius hai. Unhi se tha greatest khatra…

Toh aap dono ke beech mein rivalry aur dushmani kuch thi?
Arre, Raju bhai jaise achche insaan se kya dushmani. Jab main jeetkar ghar jaa raha tha, sabse pehla SMS Raju ji ka hi tha.

Kaisa laga jab aap ko pata chala ki aap jeet gaye hai?
Woh pal main marne tak nahi bhooloonga.

Jeetne ke baad ab life kaisa hai?
Ab baahar nikalta huun toh public mujhe pehchaante hai aur baat bhi karte hai. Plane mein captain, cabin crew, aam janta, sabhi log… Achcha lagta hai.

Ab aage kya hai Sunil Pal ke life mein?
Zindagi bhar bas TV, ads, stage aur filmon mein kaam karta rahoon… yehi ishwar se ichha hai.

Humse baat karne ke liye bahut bahut shukriya… Congratulations again, Sunil
Aap aur janta ke kaaran hi main aaj jeeta huun. Thank you.

Stars gazing at the moon

Karwa-chauth is an age-old ritual where the wife observes a fast for the well being of her husband and prays for his long life. To mark this special day today, we spoke with some of the famous STAR bahus and asked them how they would celebrate this festival…

The excitement among the women was easily palpable. They were rather elaborate when asked about various formalities, which are included as a part of the rituals.

The vivacious Poonam Narula (yes, she's the better half of one of the couples on Nach Baliye) of Kkusum fame, told us about how she loves gorging various delicacies and gulps around 2-3 glasses of water before she starts her fast. She also spoke about how much she loves the gifts she receives from her husband, Manish Goel. However, what she enjoys the most is the fact that her husband keeps pampering her throughout the day.

However, for Shilpa Saklani, Ganga of Kyunki… (and another jodi of Nach Baliye) who is married to Approva Aghnihotri, it is about exchanging gifts with her mother-in-law, which is traditionally called Sargi.

It's the same with Rinku Dhawan, Chhaya in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii who adds, "Seviyan needs to be added in your menu before you go in for the fast".

Ritu Chowdhary, Shobha in Kyunki…, seems to be more relaxed. In her family it is more of a fun thing where friends and family get together and have a good time. Preparations at her place start a day early, when women apply mehendi on their hands.

However Dolly Sohi of Bhabhi fame, who recently got married to an NRI was rather unaware of the rituals, and was seeking advice from friends and colleagues.

When asked what would they prefer doing throughout the day, we got a bag of mixed reactions.

Dolly Sohi and Shilpa Saklani prefer working as it could help them divert their mind, whereas Poonam Narula loves relaxing at home.

Ritu Chowdhary spends time back home with family and friends. Rinku Dhawan usually invites her friends over to her place for a session of card games.

But what pepped up the entire conversation were their views over men observing a fast for women. There was an echo of reactions as they feel their husbands should also be a part of this. After all, don't they want their wife to live longer?

Despite the long and busy schedules, these women have kept the roots of their culture alive. We hope they enjoy every bit of the celebration and wish them luck and loads of love.

Star One sweeps Telly awards

rediff Entertainment Bureau | November 07, 2005 22:48 IST

It's always interesting to see a relative rookie upstage the competition.

The Indian Telly Awards 2005 are currently under way in Mumbai, and newcomer Star One seems to be the channel to beat this year.

While it's no surprise that it's flagship show -- Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai -- has already scooped its categories thus far - Best Serial (Comedy) and Best Director (Comedy) for funnyman Deven Bhojani, their desi take on CSI isn't doing too badly either: Special Squad won in both Best Director (Drama) and Best Serial (Thriller/Horror) categories, the first award going to director Nand Kumar Kale.

As if that wasn't enough, Karan Wahi (of Remix) snatched the award for Best Newcomer (Male). This is one channel that's going to party hard.

The list of winners so far is as follows:

Best Director, Drama - Nand Kumar Kale, Special Squad
Best Director, Comedy - Deven Bhojani, Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai
Best Serial, Comedy - Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai
Best Serial Thriller/Horror show - Special Squad
Best Reality Show - Fame Gurukul
Best Children's Programme - Haatim
Best Child Artiste - Pashin Sachdev, Chosen One
Best Male Newcomer - Karan Wahi, Remix
Best Female Newcomer - Mona Vasu, Milii

Best Actress Comedy - Ratna Pathak Shah, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai
Best Actor, Comedy - Satish Shah, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai
Best Actor Negative Role - Makarand Deshpande, CID
Best Actress, Negative Role - Sudha Chandran, Pratimaa
Best Actress, Popular - Smriti Irani, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
Best Actor, Popular - Hiten Tejwani, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
Best Actor, Drama - Varun Badola, Astitva, Ek Prem Kahani
Best Actress, Drama - Mona Singh, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin
Best Serial, Popular - Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
Best Serial, Drama - Siddhanth
Best News Channel - Aajtak

By the end of the evening, several awards went to shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which is only to be expected for the country's reigning soap. But it's still admirable to see that Star One's tally of awards outscores the other, far more established channels.

Tickling the funny bone
Comedy is the new buzzword on the idiot box, reports Gouri Shukla
LAUGHTER IS IN THE AIR: Shekhar Suman and Navjot Sidhu in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge show (top); scenes from Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Khichadi (above) and the cast of Hum Paanch (below)

It started with a few giggles, but now the laughter is resonant. There is humour in the air — or, rather, on the airwaves. Balaji Telefilms, which produces soap operas that usually revolve around the tearful sagas of mothers-in-law and their families, has just relaunched an old comedy serial. And it's not the only one, for humour, clearly, is the flavour of the season.

Television has suddenly become flooded with comedy. The Mumbai-based production house, which had dropped comic serials like a hot brick when its family sagas such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi captured an unprecedented number of eyeballs, has rediscovered the worth of humour. After a break of five years, Balaji Telefilms recently went back to its maiden production, Hum Paanch, a serial on the antics of five sisters, on Zee TV.

That's not all. Mumbai-based producer and director Ravi Rai — producer of such emotional television dramas as Hasratein and Silsilay — is in the process of making a debut in the comedy genre on Zee TV. And just when you thought SAB TV, the humour-centric channels floated by Adhikari Brothers, had gone into oblivion, it was relaunched as part of the Sony Entertainment Television bouquet, with a greater emphasis on humour content.

"There is a revival of comedy on television now. Intelligent humour is being appreciated and accepted," says actor Satish Shah, back on television with Star One's Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (a comedy) after a five-year break. "I didn't believe in the kind of [slapstick] comedy that was happening on television in the late 1990s," says the actor, who became a household name with the rollicking Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi back in the Eighties. Seconds actor-anchor Shekhar Suman, "It's a trend you can see not only on television but even in films. People no longer want to see sob sagas. They just want to have fun and de-stress."

Switch on the TV set and you'll know that humour is back. Soaps still reign supreme, of course, but TV seems to have suddenly recovered its lost joke book. So while Star has Line of Control, Sarabhai, Khichadi and The Great Indian Comedy Show in its laughter kitty, Zee is bringing back Hum Paanch, after wrapping up Kareena Kareena, another comedy, along with a slew of new serials on Zee Smile, Zee's direct-to-home channel.

If this is a comeback of sorts for comedy, it has come after a long time. The late Eighties and Nineties were dominated by humour — with serials such as Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi and Zabaan Sambhalke becoming hugely popular. By the end of the Nineties, the daily family dramas had made a melodramatic entry, elbowing comedies out.

Laughter gave way to tears at a time when comedies were getting thin. When the saas-bahu brigade entered the fray, reigning comedies such as Tu Tu Main Main were in their last season after running for a continuous two years. As industry insiders point out, comedy as a genre can't retain audience interest for long, unlike dramas full of suspense and emotions that keep unfolding every day.

"Comedy is all about objective viewing, it's not as emotionally binding as a daily soap can be. You feel compelled to stick to the storyline in case of dramas but in sitcoms (situation comedies) you can start watching from any point in the episode," says Shailja Kejriwal, senior creative director at Star TV.

No surprise then, that daily soaps still rule, even though the average Television Rating Points (TRPs) — an eyeball count — of the top three family soaps have declined over the last five years. Kyunki's TRPs have slid from 19 to 13 since 2000 but it still remains the soap with the highest viewership. "When emotional dramas caught on, channels were not as keen on comedy scripts as they are now," states Jignesh Majithia, co-founder, Hats Off Productions. The result, he says, was a half-hearted attempt at comedy. Shah seconds that. "There was a lot of buffoonery happening in the mid-1990s in the name of comedy. Very few comedies on television really worked then, thanks to a serious dearth of intelligent comedy scripts," he says.

So for a while the weepy sagas ruled. But somewhere along the way industry leaders realised that while the soaps were the staple diet of the middle-aged and the old, the young — especially men — tended to keep away. Comedy, on the other hand, attracted a young audience, including the male viewer. That's what Star discovered in 2004. Riding piggyback on its top three K-serials (Kyunki, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki and Kasauti Zindagi Kay), Star Plus has consistently commanded close to 60 per cent of total television viewership since 2000 though the saas-bahu dramas did not keep younger viewers (15-34 years) hooked.

Star could not afford to change the programme mix on Star Plus, which had turned out to be its winning formula. So Star One was launched with a promise of a fresh set of programmes for the urban young. Accordingly, the channel launched with differently-formatted programmes, including weekly suspense dramas and a couple of comedy shows. "They were focused on programming for an SEC (socio economic class) urban audience initially," says Majithia. Even the initial promotions revolved around shows such as Siddhanth (a young lawyer's tale), Special Squad (a detective series) and Remix (a story of yuppie teenagers who start their own band).

But soon the channel discovered that the programmes that really raked in the TRPs, besides having instant recall, were shows such as Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Instant Khichadi.

The turning point, however, was The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, a talent hunt for stand-up comedians. "The Laughter Challenge has proved to be a driver for the channel on the whole," says Shailesh Dave, chief executive officer, Runaway Productions, which provides content for shows such as Dil Kya Chahta Hai and The Great Indian Comedy Show for Star One in collaboration with Contiloe Films.

By August 2005, three months after its launch, The Great Indian Laughter Challenge was next to Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) on Star Plus, in terms of average television viewership ratings (TVRs). The average TVRs for The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, according to TAM Media Research, was 7-8, only next to KBC which scored 12-13. Sony's Fame Gurukul, a musical talent hunt, registered average TRPs of 4-5 in the same period. "The Great Indian Laughter Challenge turned out to be a surprise package for the channel. And Star decided to cash in on comedy," says an industry insider.

If Star One just discovered its humour quotient, Zee TV has changed its funny formula, too. In early 2004, Zee launched Zee Smile. Previously the channel aired re-runs of popular comedy programmes that had run their innings on Zee TV. But ever since it has tweaked its programming and brought the channel on the free-to-air platform, Zee Smile has reported a 40 per cent increase in profits.

And now the channel is betting its money on the laughter game. It launched newer programmes as soon as it was made free-to-air. "We want to extend the comedy positioning to that of just fun and zero-stressful viewing. That would include more format shows or game shows based on the idea of having fun," says Nitin Vaidya, senior vice-president, Zee Regional Channels & Zee Smile. Zee has also brought its humour channel on the free-to- air platform since early 2005.

In the pipeline is a talk show with Bollywood actor Anupam Kher, a format show called Naughty at 40, and a gala round of Hasya Kavi Sammelan. Taking a cue from The Great Indian Laughter Challenge's success, Zee Smile is splashing the Hasya Kavi Sammelan on outdoor media this year, unlike the low key affair last year. And SAB TV (gross rating points of 28, up from 14 last year) will relaunch with Lo-Kal-Lo Baat — another comedian hunt.

But the business of laughter is not all that easy. Today, the comedy genre competes with the reality and drama categories for viewership. Channels are learning to tackle that by adding a dash of reality to the comedy recipe. With format shows making a debut in the comedy genre, sitcoms are also changing. "Unlike before, intelligent scripts are being accepted now," says Suman, who is one of the main hosts of The Great Indian Comedy Show.

Channels are also learning from international markets, where sitcoms have always had the highest TRPs, despite 10-year runs. But international sitcoms roll up a season in just 22-26 episodes, and launch the next season after a break of six to eight months. "We need to adopt the concept of having seasons. You can't stretch a joke for too long," says Majithia, who recently wrapped up the second season of Instant Khichadi, giving it a six to eight month gap.

Is that helping? "Marketers surely seem more ready to bet on humour now, as compared to the end of the Nineties," says Cyrus Oshidar, senior vice-president, creative and content, MTV Networks, India. So while Movers & Shakers — the first late night show, hosted by Suman — on Sony TV got Reid & Taylor to promote it, but only for a brief while, the 13-14 week long Laughter Challenge won exclusive sponsorship from Clinic All Clear from, and later from Hutchison-Essar. Not surprisingly, producers are laughing all the way to the bank.

Rajeshwari faints on Nach Baliye sets & more spicy bites
The hottest pair on Nach Baliye Varun and Rajeshwari Badola faced a slight upset when Rajeshwari fainted in her make-up van minutes before their performance. In spite of severe health problems, Rajeshwari went ahead with practice but felt sick before the actual act. While on the way to the sets she developed a sudden vertigo attack and threw up and later fainted in her van.

The couple's perfor mance was a bit off the mark but they are still on the show. Rajeshwari has been taking dance lessons since she was six and hubby Varun is also working hard to match her steps.

Samar of Saat Phere quits
A few days after Zee TV's Saath Phere went on air, reports have started coming in that Anand Suryavanshi has opted out of the show. He plays the character of Samar who is the main protagonist Saloni's brother.

The reason being given is that Suryavanshi was not happy with the way his role was shaping up after some changes in the script. As a result, he stopped coming for shoots and became disinterested in the show. The producer Sunjay Wadhwa is also hold ing his ground saying that he cannot change his script depending on his actors' wishes. So in all probability Anand will be replaced by another actor on the show.
