Juhi gets judgmental

Juhi Chawla makes her official TV debut with Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa as a judge.

Juhi Chawla will be judging the third edition of Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Just before she took centerstage at the press conference, the channel showed an AV of Shah Rukh Khan commenting on his good friend taking on the role of a judge. Khan said that Juhi was incapable of judging anyone negatively and will give all the contestants 10 on 10. He even let out a 'secret'. He said that whenever anyone gave a bad performance all they had to do was look at her sadly and she would melt down and give full marks. "She's so softhearted that she can never be mean or rude to anyone," said SRK.

Minutes later, when we met her for an interview, she flashed her trademark smile and said, "Shah Rukh has made me out to be some sort of a chocolate bar. But he's right to an extent. I can never bring myself to be mean or rude to anyone. I do realise how those contestants must feel for dancing on stage without any retakes. I'm an actress, so I know how it is when others comment or criticise your performance."

Chawla says that she will, however, make the proceedings more interesting "because Sarojji (Khan) and Vaibhavi (Merchant) are there unki class lene ke liye."

So has Juhi ever been shouted at by Saroj Khan while shooting for her dances? "Surprisingly, no. Sarojji has always been sweet to me. Maybe because though I wasn't a great dancer, I would put in all efforts to please her."

Given her comic sense of timing, wouldn't judging a Comedy Circus or a Laughter Challenge been more up her alley? "May be yes, but I'd be looking more at the contestants' attitude, the judging would be from a humane point of view. Sarojji aur Vaibhavi hain na dance ki nitty-gritties dekhne ke liye."

The actress also candidly mentioned how Sony sent her home a "mota (fat) cheque". So what else besides Vitamin M prompted her to take up Jhalak..? She smiles, "Offers had been coming for the last two years but the timing seemed to be right now."

Ask her if she is prepared for all the scrutiny by the media on her role as a judge and she says, "Well, after all these years of being in the public eye, one gets used to the media glare. And do I have a choice given the way media has grown and its presence everywhere?"

Her co-star with two left feet? Sunny Deol? She laughs, "Well I didn't say anything. You said it. But Sunny more than made up in the other aspects of acting."

Her favourite dancers. "Hrithik moves like a dream and I'm fond of Shahid too."

Finally, how's her character of Minty, the wife of a hyper, successful film producer in Luck By Chance been accepted? "You know while shooting, when I saw the clothes I was wearing and my look in it, I thought, mar gaye, God knows what have I got myself into! But after the film released, the response has been overwhelming. Though I completely flipped over Rishiji's character - roly-poly, cute, adorable, wasn't he good?"

'I haven't danced in my life'

The innocence is still in place. When you look at Bhagyashree dancing to a slow number on the Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa stage, you feel time has stood still. We met her at the launch of the show in which she is a participant. Excerpts from a conversation

Your pigeon and you had become very popular in Maine Pyar Kiya. Years later Sonam Kapoor is now the kabootar girl.
Yes, I know. I absolutely love her in the Masakali song in Delhi 6 and I really think, with no offence meant to other heroines, that Sonam has brought in a certain freshness, an innocence, an Indianness into Hindi films. She is exceptionally pretty.

Why Jhalak..?
Because I had promised myself that I'll do something new in 2009.

Are you anxious?
Yes, a bit. You know the first day when we all met our choreographers, they closed the rehearsal hall door and told us, 'Now think you are at home and dance as if no one is watching you.' I told them, "But I never do this at home." (Smiles).

What did your husband and kids say?
They said, 'Go ahead, have fun but don't make a fool of yourself on national television.'

Will you play the Maharashtrian card, like Sonali Kulkarni did last year?
Definitely no. I'm an Indian and wouldn't want my caste to be a talking point for garnering votes. It's simple. I want to dance well and win my viewers over. Dance has never been a way of life for me. I haven't even danced in my films, so it will be a challenge.

Who do you think will be your toughest competitor?
Considering I don't know anything about dance, they all are. Competition to me is all about bettering yourself and doing well with a lot of heart and hard work.

But Gauhar Khan and Mohinder Amarnath are a treat to watch. While Gauhar is all sexy and groovy, Mohinderji being such a senior is such a good sport, he's inspiring.

Do you think Jhalak.. will open doors for you as far as career is concerned?
Don't know. I strictly believe in enjoying the journey and not worrying about the destination.

Sooraj and his sister Kavita are making serials for TV. Would you consider acting in them?
Any acting offer has to be very different from what I'm known for. I have had the opportunity of doing some great roles like a husband-beater and that of a woman who has to deal with hardened criminals in regional films. If something gives me a chance to stretch my limits, I'll do it.

Will Ugesh work his magic on Jhalak?

Magician Ugesh Sarcar is already well known in India for his mind-blowing tricks. From reading minds to making objects float, India's answer to Criss Angel will now be judged on whether he is as spellbinding a dancer as he is a magician.

We caught up with Ugesh, who is partnered with choreographer Tina Sachdev, and asked him what tricks he has up his sleeve to outdo his competitors on Jhalak.

Why did you take up Jhalak?
Well, it's because of Misark Bhakaria. He's actually haunted me by continuously telling me that I should do it because it would be fun. That is why I am here.

How has been the experience so far?
It's been great! My body hurts, it hurts so bad that I can't even sleep at night but otherwise it's real fun.

Does your magic work here?
It's crazy because I've promised myself not to use my magic in dance. I am just going to go ahead and work hard.

How would you rate yourself as a dancer?
Well, let's just say that I am being overambitious here (laughs).

What are your strengths that will help you to survive longer?
Give me 10,000 years and I'll be the best dancer (laughs). Frankly, I don't think I have any strength. If you don't trust me, go ask my choreographer. She keeps cursing herself saying 'why did I get this guy?'

Who do you see as your toughest competitor on the show?

All of them! All the other 11 contestants have some sort of background in dance, even Mohinder ji, at this age, is so fit and fine so lets see.

Of all the judges, who are you most scared of?
I am not scared of the judges because they are here because of what they are. I respect them and tomorrow, if they tell me that I am dead, then that means I am dead. So, I like and respect all of them.

Is there any negativity between the participants because of the competition?
No, I don't think so. If negativity emerges, it will probably be if you take the first step in that direction.

Are you going to be vocal on the show?
I am a kind of person who is happier doing things. All I do is I keep irritating my choreographer and everybody around.

How much time have you been dedicating to the rehearsals?
As of now I am spending 6-7 hours, because rest of my time I have to give to other things too.

Are you scared of the eliminations which will happen every week?
I am just here to enjoy and have fun. I am here to entertain people.

Do you think there is any kind of magical trick to win the show?
Dance, dance and dance really well. Let's see what I can do.

Catch Sarcar on the dance floor from February 27 on Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa (Sony TV).

Battle is on before it starts for Gauhar Khan

Gauhar Khan, one of the contestants on Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa 3, is rumoured to be having problems with not only a fellow contestant, Parul Chauhan, but also the person she has to get along with, her choreographer Hanif Hilal.

Talking about Parul, she says, "I don't have any issues with Parul. I had a problem with the fact that she was allowed to come in a little later than the others because she is doing a daily soap. I don't agree with such concessions. And I am actually quite fond of her. We speak to each other very often. I do not know why this has been taken to be true. But I guess, reality shows are always like this."

However, the actress does have a problem with her choreographer Hanif Hilal, whose she feels isn't very committed to winning the show. She says, "See, I am not here to waste my time. I want to win the show like every one else. I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I'd benefit in one way or another. I have taken up the show to gain exposure."

Hanif, she says, only spoke of his weaknesses when they first met, instead of what they would do in the show. She says, "He told me that he is weak in a few areas and brought the conversation to the end there. My confidence level dropped, obviously. He should be talking about new ideas and how he is going to help me win the show."

So, would she like to change her choreographer? "Yes," she says, "Why not? But since I have no option, I guess I'll just have to make amends and live with it."

Gauhar also mentions that she is fully prepared for the judges' comments. She says, "Everything is fair in love and war."

We would love to see them together…

Some of our telly stars look so good together that we just can't help but hope they'd pair up.

Sharad and Divyanka: Talk about Vidya-Sagar or Divya-Amar of Banoo Main Teri Dulhan, Divyanka Tripathi and Sharad Malhotra have won the hearts of millions through their sizzling onscreen chemistry. Known to already share a very close bond, people really will love to discover that the two are a couple.

Parul and Kinshuk: The dark girl of Bidaai has already gained the sympathy of the viewers and the dashing Kinshuk has garnered lots of praises from his female fans. After marrying each other on the show, the audience now hopes to see them get married in real life.

Avika and Avinash: The innocent Anandi and cute Jagdish of Balika Vadhu have already become popular household names. They look so cute together onscreen that people would just love to see them together as 'beeind and beeindni' in real life too.

Harshad and Aditi: Heer and Prem of Kis Des Mein Hai Mera Dil complete each other. It is widely accepted that Aditi Gupta and Harshad Chopra share an amazing chemistry not only on camera but off the camera too.

Rahul and Monica: Lover boy Rahul Mahajan should receive the credit for Bigg Boss' popularity. He has not missed a single opportunity to profess his love for Monica Bedi. They have become so popular that viewers are now waiting for them to tie the knot.
