I had an idea on the bus today and started writing. Hope you guys like it.
The City that Never Sleeps
It was hard.
Extremely hard.
There were numerous questions travelling in her mind. What is she going to do? How is she going to work on the 'what' part? Are they angry with her? Do they hate her for the step she's had to take?
Does he?
The flight was essentially a quiz for Avni. A quiz which had no answers. A quiz she had no answers to.
Frankly, she was terrified. She was terrified of how she's going to manage this new life which she has chosen. What scared Avni the most was the innocent soul, who had her little warm hands, wrapped around her cold tired ones. She wondered if she'll be able to nurture her. She wondered if she'll be able to provide Mishti with the childhood she was never destined. She wondered if she would be able to fill Mishti's life with so much love and happiness that she'd never turn around and ask her about Mumbai.
About the family.
About him.
Him.
Neil.
Although she didn't want to, Avni couldn't help but think about Neil. She couldn't help but think about his bloodshot eyes which, by now, must've discovered her supposed dead body. She couldn't help but think about how Neil is going cope after hearing about her death. At that thought, she wondered if she was making a mistake. If she was being selfish and choosing the easier way out. After all, she was, yet again, leaving her family, her Neil, when they had barely recovered from Neela Ma death.
No. Avni shook her head, wiping her tear-stained cheeks. She had to do this. She had no other choice. She had made a promise to Neil. She had promised him that she'll never let anything harm this family. Harm him. She had promised him that she'll put him before anyone else. And, that's exactly what she has done.
Yes, she is being selfish by deceiving her loved ones. However, if this deceit will ensure their safety, then so be it.
Avni was ready to die such deaths a thousand times if it meant that her family, her Neil remained unharmed. Her thoughts were disrupted due to the announcement of the flight landing being made. She fastened her seatbelt and let out a quiet breath.
This is it. This is her life now. Mishti and her in a new city, doing exactly what she's best at.
Hiding.
Shortly after tackling immigration, Avni stepped out, wheeling the suitcases she had previously packed, whilst holding Mishti's hand. Keeping her rather close to her side. Avni's heeled boots clicked against the floor as she moved around the airport in attempt of finding the way out.
Approximately 5 minutes, she had managed to find a member of staff who directed her towards the way out. The crisp air hit her face unexpectedly, making her let out a quiet gasp. She pulled Mishti closer to her upon seeing her round warm cheeks turn the slightest shade of pink.
Avni looked around for a cab and finally one halted for her. Avni's steps faltered again, the same question returning to mind. Was she doing the right thing? She came out of her trance upon hearing the horn beeping. Realisation dawned upon her, and, she hurriedly made Mishti sit inside as the driver helped her with her luggage.
Avni was about to step inside when something caught her eye. Across the street, written in bold black letters were some words which reminded her of reality.
"Welcome to New York! It's been waiting for you..."
Yes, a Taylor Swift reference.
