Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh, Hariharan, and more.... all three of these singers and many others have one thing in common - they have all wowed us with their melodious voices, singing ghazals...!!

In our third week of Music Month, we, the Crazy Creatives, are here to present the launch of .....

Ghazals and sufi music!!

Ji haan, be prepared to discuss, listen, and talk about ghazal music in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.. be wowed by the "dha din" of the tabla and sound of musical instruments...

To start off, here's a discussion topic, for YOU, the members to think about -

What makes ghazals different from just reciting poetry?

Sochiye aur post bhi kijiye! Post all your thoughts in this very thread... and be prepared to see much more as this week progresses!!

Wonderful topic Ammmu! Ghazals and Sufi music are both awesome.

I am a little confused about your question though. Ghazals are a type of poetry and they can be recited or sung. Do you mean "how is poetry different when its sung than when its recited"?

Anyway, I love ghazals! Its a very unique style of poetry that I haven't seen in any other language. Since the lines of a ghazal do not have to be related to each other, many poets use just one sher to convey a complete idea.

Some singers have really made their mark as ghazal singers and I love the way they bring melody and emotions to the words. My favorite will have to be Jagjit Singh. I'll never get over how well he sang "Hosh Walon Ko Khabar Kya"...

I written two ghazals myself, and I must say that its VERY hard. Neither of mine are really that great. But by reading and listening to those of famous shayers like Ghalib and Mir, I hope that I will get better at it.

Looking forward to hearing some great music on IF this week!
