SAJAN - A BLAST FROM THE PAST – PART – 7
"What?!" Ms. Tamanna glared at Mayank and Nupur as they stood anxiously waiting for her reply. "Yeh kya keh rahe ho tum dono? Seriously guys, agar tum dono jaoge to hum rehersals kaise karenge?"
"Mam," spoke up Mayank. "We're really very sorry. Magar hume jana hi hoga. We cannot lose such a big opportunity. Or vaise bhi, sirf kuch hi dino ki baat hai. Benji aur hum jaldi hi vapas aa jayenge."
"And we promise to practice on our own as well," Nupur added in her two cents.
Tamanna mam sighed and massaged her temples. "Theek hai. Magar I want a dress up rehersals once you are back. and I want it to be perfect. Agar perfect nahin hua toh…" she trailed off, her tone warning.
The two nodded quickly and thanked her.
"Oh, and best of luck with your dance performance on the reality show," she called out as they turned to leave. They nodded and left.
"Kya hua?" Benji asked anxiously as they made their way into the cafeteria. They explained the condition Tamanna mam had set.
"Thank God!" exclaimed Shhena. "Ab tum log ja sakte ho aur Gunjan ko bacha sakte ho." She looked a little sulky as she was not going with them.
The plan was this : Samrat, Mayank, Nupur and Benji would go and rescue Gunjan while Sheena and Dodo would stay here and cover for the four of them. Needless to say, the two of them, especially, Sheena had NOT been happy to hear this. They'd protested fiercely for a while before Mayank flat out refused to take them and stated logiacally all the reasons for them to stay back. they'd finally backed down, grumbling. Sheena had warned the four going that if anything went wrong they were to give her a call, or else she was personally going to tear them to bits and feed them to the lions in a nearby forest. If there was a forest of course.
Benji looked around for Samrat who was nowhere to be seen. He quicky realised that there was only one place where Samrat could have gone and started off in that direction. His suspicions were quickly confirmed when he saw Samrat shooting hoops in the basket ball court.
"Dude!" he called out. Samrat ignored him. Benji called out again and again Samrat did not respond. He frowned. Samrat had been extremely quiet and distant since this morning. Granted, ever since the news of Gunjan's kiddnapping had arrived he'd been distant, but it was really over the top today. He was worried about his best mate, but there was nothing he could do to help him. This was something Samrat had to sort out for himself.
Finally getting Samrat's attention, he told him about Tamanna mam's condition and that they were leaving for Delhi tonight. Samrat nodded, not really caring about the Tam mam's sharth, but eager to set off to Delhi. He had some serious Ruby and Champ butt to kick.
Samrat was deep in thought as he packed his bag that evening. As they were going to pretend he was sick, he could not make it too obvious that he was going away and that his house was going to be unoccupied for a while.
Samrat did not care about all these things. All he cared about was tha fact that his best friend, his love and the one person he cherished more than anything else was in the hands of the one person he hated more than anyone else. The one person who would not hesitate to kill his love if he did not do as he asked. If all else failed, if Mayank's plan failed, then he would marry Ruby if it meant he could save Gunjan. He would do anything to save Gunjan's life, give up his own even. It made no difference to him. Besides, it was his fault that he was in this condition today and he was going to make sure that she did not pay for his past wrongs.
"I'm coming, Gunjan," he whispered clutching a photo of the two of them to his chest. "Main aa raha hoon. And I swear, main tumhe kuch nahin hone doonga."
Around two hours later, Samrat, Mayank, Nupur, Benji and Sheena and Dodo who'd come to see them off, all stood on the platform, getting ready to board the train.
"Dekho, agar kuch hua, toh please-"
"Tumhe khabar de denge," Mayank interupted Sheena. "Ok, baba. You proved your point the first 100 times."
Sheena sighed. "I'm sorry. It's just, kuch bhi galat ho sakta hai, Ruby ko plan ke bare mein pata chal gaya toh? I'm just worried, guys."
She was surprised with a sudded hug from Nupur.
"Don't worry Sheena. Sab theek ho jayega. Kuch galat nahin hoga." Sheena hugged her back, silently offering all the comfort she could.
"Mujhe bata rahi ho, ya apne aap ko convince karne ki koshish kar rahi ho?" she asked her softly. Nupur shook her head, sighing and offered a small smile to Mayank as he wrapped an arm around her.
"Do your best, guys," dodo said to Samrat and Benji. "Bring our fair princess and please don't let the evil witch and her crazy minions win. After all fairytales must end with a 'They all lived happily ever after', right? I mean, we cannot break that unwritten rule!"
Samrat nodded, his lips curling into the faintest hint of a smile.
"Don't worry, Uday," he said confidently. "Hum Gunjan ko vapas ghar lake rahenge. I promise." He only wished he felt as confident as he sounded.
Uady nodded. The train whistled, signaling that it was time for the chosen four to get going. They got onto the train and waved to their two friends who faithfully watched until the train disappeared out of sight.
"They'll be ok, right?" Uday asked. Sheena was quiet and then-
"Yes. They'll be just fine." She was not sure whom she was comforting; herself or her friend.
Two hours into the train ride, Nupur was already feeling queasy. She was impatient to get there and save her sister. If she didn't……she wouldn't let herself go there.
"Relax," Mayank said, tenderly wrapping an arm around her. She sighed wearily and leaned onto him.
"Gunjan ko kuch nahin hoga," he said softly, squeezing her shoulders. She nodded and buried her face in his shoulder, tiredly sighing once again.
Mayank looked down at her, a frown on his face. He was worried about her. He knew how much Gunjan meant to her and could not imagine what would happen to her, if something happened to Gunjan.
He was also worried about his two friends. Samrat had just not been himself since Gunjan's kidnapping and hadn't said more than a 100 words to them all week. He was pale, withdrawn and looked tired all day. Mayank knew that he just forced down a few mouthfuls during lunch when they were all together. Come to think of it, he was pretty sure Samrat hadn't talked to them all normally, since the news had come, except during the time when they were planning.
And then there was Gunjan herself. She'd been missing for almost a week now and as surprising as it was, he was worried about her too. Not just because she was his girlfriend's sister, but also because, without knowing it, he'd come to care for her like a little sister. He supposed ranting to her about Nupur had played a role in that. But, seriously speaking, he was extremely worried. While he had not voice out his concerns to the others, he knew that there was something in his plan that wasn't perfect, something that would make their attempt fail and end them all up in huge trouble. He was pretty sure he was missing something and he had no idea what. Of course, he knew that if those kidnappers dared to touch her in any way, Samrat would not be the only one to hurt them. He and Benji and not to mention Miss. Firecracker… Nupur would also be there to give them a taste of their own medicine.
Mayank sighed and rested his head on top of Nupur's, who had already fallen asleep, tired out from the day. Within moments, he was also snoring away.
Samrat watched his two friends, the corners of his mouth curving upwards in a small smile. He turned back to the passing scenary and wondered whether he and Gunjan would ever have the chance to be like that. He leaned on the doorway, finally letting himself show weakness, now that he was alone.
"Oi!"
Scratch that. Almost alone.
"Samrat! Chal yaar. So ja. Raat bahut ho chuki hai. You have to be ready for tomorrow right?"
Benji came to stand behind him and put a hand on his shoulder.
"Neend nahin aa rahi hai," replied Samrat. He glanced at Benji who was looking at him with a pitiful expression. He turned his head away, not wanting his friend's pity at the moment.
"Kya hua, Sam?" Benji asked in a soft voice. Samrat shook his head, remaining silent.
"Samrat." Benji's voice this time was stern, all though he could sense a bit of impatience in it.
"Benji, Chashmish ko kisi ne kidnap karke rakha hai and you are asking me what's wrong? Seriously dude! Wha is right?"
Benji shook his head.
"Samrat, main tujhe acchi tarah jaanta hoon. I know that Gunjan has been kidnapped and that you're damn worried about her, but kuch to baat aur hai. Tu mujhse kya chupa raha, Samrat?"
Samrat knew he was cornered. Benji never used his full name unless it was something serious and he positive that this time he ws not gettig away that easy. So he gave in and told Benji about the dream he'd had last night.
He told Benji how he dreamed that Chashmish had confessed her love. How they had kissed and how he felt at home with her. How he had pulled out the knife from her body and how she'd kissed him a deaperate goodbye.
Samrat sighed, massaging his temples as he finished his story. Benji was silent for a few minutes and then grabbed him in a hug. Silently offering what comfort he could. He had no idea what to say to Samrat. Samrat hugged him back, grateful for the silent comfort. It helped him out much better than words could ever have.
A second later, they broke apart. Benji clasped Samrat's shoulder.
"Don't worry, Sam. Hum Bhabhi ko ghar vapas make rahenge."
"Bhabhi?"
Benji grinned cheekily.
"Haan, Bhabhi. Agar tum Gunjan se apni dil ki baat batoge, toh tum dono ki shaadi ho jayegi, kuynki main janta hoon ki voh tumhe mana nahin kar payegi. Aur agar tum dono ki shaadi ho gayi, toh voh meri Bhabhi hi hogi na?"
Samrat shook his head, slightly smiling.
"Tum kabhi nahin sudheroge." His face suddenly took a serious expression.
"Thanks dude," was all he said. Benji understood the hidden emotion behind the words and nodded. He only prayed that they would not be too late to save the one person Samrat loved. He knew he would help in any way possible, if it meant Samrat's happiness. Friends after all, do that for a person.
