Chapter 2

Slowly disentangling herself from his arms, she got up and whispered in his ears.

"Get ready. I want to give you something."

Ranveer stirred slowly, looking around blindly for a couple of moments, before his eyes fell over Ishaani. He smiled at her sweetly and pulled her to himself once again, before giving her a peck on her lips. Smiling against his lips, she playfully pushed him away, while Ranveer pouted at her in mock hurt.

"Chalo, get up, sleepyhead. I need you to be here before dawn again." Confused, Ranveer looked at Ishaani for a few moments, before he smiled and nodded. Getting dressed up hurriedly, he headed towards the room to freshen up, while Ishaani stared at the sky once again. It had now got traces of pruple mixed with indigo, edges a bit pink, with the stars sparkling as brightly as before.

Ishaani hugged herself as she felt the cool breeze wrap around her body like a cool blanket and memories from the last night kept making their way up to her. Smiling sheepishly as she trailed her fingers over her arms once again, she could only thank the Almighty for bringing Ranveer back into her life after all the ups and downs they had to face and for gifting them Ravish.

Getting up, Ishaani quickly out on her sari once again, and sat over the swing, her mind gazing back towards the memories of the past, back when they were friends and how much they had come along in these 5 years alone. After an infinitesimal amount of time, Ranveer returned back to the terrace, while Ishaani headed to the room, to freshen up now.

Ranveer cleaned up the terrace properly, taking away all the candles and quilts and pillows and disposing them off properly, until the terrace was spic and span again. He now stood by the wall of the terrace, waiting for Ishaani and staring at the now rapidly changing sky, that had the shades of pink, purple, blue and red converged together like a canvas of colours fused together.

Ishaani walked up to him, adorned in a black and red sari, devoid of any jewelery and make-up, save for her mangalsutra and eye-liner. Ranveer looked at her and smiled, while she threw her arms around his neck and hugged him. Ranveer, did not know for how long they stood like that, for it felt so comforting to be in Ishaani's arms, all his tiredness and worries ebbing away, leaving it with a newfound spark of living.

Suddenly he heard Ishaani soft voice, muffled by the cloth of his kurta.

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For being there in my life and for making me whole."

Ranveer smiled at her and caressed her cheek, while he now looked at the sky, which was once again the fusion of red, orange, yellow, pink and blue, the stars nowhere to be seen and the first rays of sun were breaking out.

"Will you promise me something, Ishaani?"

"Kaho."

"Tum hamesha aise hi mera saath deti rahogi. Kabhi chhodke nahi jaogi, aur zindagi ke har musibat ka saamna saath mein karenge." Ishaani stared at him, her head titled slightly on one side as though comtemplating something, before she tiptoed and kissed Ranveer on the bridge of his nose.

"Promise."

The two of them looked at the sky now, as the sun rose from the horizon, bringing out with it, several new colours of life, while the last remnants of darkness faded away completely now.

"Weren't you supposed to give me something?"

"I already did give it to you."

"And what was that?"

"A memory to remember this dawn by."

Ishaani gently pulled out Ravish from his cot, where he first woke up grumpily, being angry at the way he was unceremoniously woken up, but at the sight of his mother's happy face, a smile crossed his chubby features and he tried to catch hold of Ishaani's hair, a small giggle escaping him.

Ishaani took him to their bathroom, where she first bathed him, the most tiring job of the day because just like herself, Ravish was overly fond was water, that led to Ishaani getting completely drenched more than half of the time, thanks to Ravish's water splashing game. She them got him to slowly brush his teeth, where once again, he swallowed the toothpaste on his brush before Ishaani scolded him, but all he did was laugh shamelessly.

Cleaning him up and powdering him, she made him wear his clothes, a nice T-shirt and shorts and made him sit on the cot once again. She brought out his small comb and combed his hair, while Ravish admired him reflection in the mirror and laughed continuously at the amount of attention his mother was giving him. His wide, chocolate eyes were always alight with mischief and happiness, while his fair, chubby cheeks were always victim to several people pulling it affectionately.

As soon as Ishaani finished all her ministrations, Ravish looked into the mirror and an "Gooo!" left his lips. Looking into the mirror's reflection, Ishaani saw Ranveer's head popping through the crack of the door, while he made all sorts of faces at Ravish, for the latter's entertainment, while Ishaani simply shook her head in amusement.

Walking up to the door, Ishaani swung it open and Ranveer rushed inside and pulled Ravish out of the cot once again, into his arms where he tickled him and Ravish burst out into loud squeals of laughter, begging for Ranveer to stop. Ranveer kissed the boy on his cheek and cuddled him, while Ishaani went into the kitchen to bring up Ravish's breakfast, along with their own.

After half an hour, Ishaani returned back to the room with a tray laden with food, milk and a bowl of poha for Ravish and theplas and kachoris for themselves along with a steaming kettle of tea. Ravish was sitting on Ranveer's back, while Ranveer was crawling him around the room, playing 'ghoda-gadi'. Ravish yanked Ranveer' T-shirt several times with a 'Yee-haw!' and Ranveer fastened his pace, so that Ravish wouldn't complain, while making sure that Ravish does not slip off his back.

Ishaani kept it on the table and cleared her throat. Both the father and son looked at her and smiled, Ravish getting down from Ranveer's back gracefully and Ranveer getting up painfully, his hand massaging his back. Ishaani took a seat on one of the low chairs around the table, the bowl of poha in her hand. Ranveer took the kettle of tea and filled two cups for themselves, while he distributed the kachoris and theplas on the two plates and pushed one near Ishaani.

Ranveer sniffed the bowl of poha in apparent satisfaction and said happily.

"Arre waah, poha! Mmm... aaj toh papa Ravish ko apne haathon se khilayenge."

"Jee nahi, aaj mummy Ravish ko khilayenge"

"Nahi papa khilayenge."

"Nahi mummy khilayegi."

"Papa!"

"Mummy!"

Ishaani and Ranveer stopped abruptly as they heard Ravish laughing loudly, enjoying all the din being created by his parents. Looking at each other as the same thought struck them together, they looked towards Ravish and spoke in unison.

"Ravish decide karega!"

Ravish stopped laughing abruptly, seeing that his parents wanted his answer on a matter as important as who was going to feed him breakfast. He had not learnt to speak completely, but he could still manage to use words in bits and phrases.

"Haan, aaj Ravish decide karega. Aur agar Ravish mummy ke haath se breakfast khayega na toh mummy use ice-cream bhi khilayegi phir.

"Par agar Ravish ne papa ke haath se khaya toh Papa use ghoda-gaadi khelne denge."

"Mujhe pata hai Ravish mere haath se hi khayega. Roz usko main hi toh khilaati hoon na."

"Isiliye toh who bechaara tumhein dekh dekh kar thak gaya hai. Usko bhi toh change of atmosphere mile!"

"Ranveer tum..."

"Papa!"

Ranveer and Ishaani both stared at Ravish, Ranveer triumphantly and Ishaani scowling. Taking Ravish in his lap, he took the bowl from Ishaani's hand and started feeding him, while he showed Ishaani his tongue. Ishaani scowled and rolled her eyes at him.

"Mera Ravish kitna samajhdar hai. Aur mummy toh aapko ek hi ice-cream dene waali thi na, par Papa toh aapko do-teen khilayenge."

Ravish, apparently pleased with himself, ate merrily from Ranveer's hand, while Ranveer winked at the fuming Ishaani. Ishaani looked at Ravish, but could not even be angry with him, for Ravish was giving her one of his most disarming smiles, accompanied with his puppy-dog eyes, something he had unashamedly inherited from his father.

"Bilkul Papa pe gaye ho tum."

Ravish smiled toothily at her, while Ranveer shook his head proudly. The rest of the meal passed peacefully, with Ravish having his meal without any tantrums, while he heard Ranveer and Ishaani discuss about several matters that were beyond his comprehension. His ears always liked the sound of their parents talking this swiftly. It always gave him the feeling of him being a part of a very important conversation.

Once breakfast was done, Ranveer quickly got ready foe work, while Ishaani handed him over his handkerchief and mobile in a hurry. Ranveer rushed over to Ravish and ruffled his hair once again and kissed him goodbye, while Ravish put up a tantrum once again in letting Ranveee go. Ravish never liked to see Ranveer go for work.

Hurrying over to Ishaani once again, he kissed her goodbye and muttered a swift 'I love you', while Ishaani saw him to his car and returned back home to the nursery, where Ravish was waiting for her to read him his story.

Ranveer returned back home at 10 in the night. Ishaani and Ravish were both fast asleep in their room, where Ravish and Ishaani were both cuddled up to each other. Ranveer quickly freshened up once again and sat by Ishaani, gently stroking her hair, a magnificent smile creeping up his face at the sight of her sleeping so peacefully, without a single worry in the world.

Ishaani stirred slowly and saw Ranveer sitting by her. She smiled and hugged him sleepily, but making sure not to disturb Ravish in the process. Once they parted, Ishaani slowly separated herself from Ravish, while she headed towards the kitchen to make themselves two cups of coffee, for Ranveer had already had his dinner during a conference meeting at work. Ranveer sat by Ravish and gently ran his fingers over the latter's head, an effect that always managed to keep Ravish's sleep intact.

Ishaani returned back to the room after 15 minutes with two mugs of coffee in her hands and she sat by the coffee table and yawned. Ranveer covered a blanket over Ravish and joined Ishaani over the coffee table, where the two of them drank their coffee with silence, while they stared at Ravish tucked away peacefully with the sight of proud parents, their hearts always in a bliss when around Ravish.

This boy had certainly changed their world forever. He had now become their world.
