Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious days for the Hindus. This festival one of the major harvest festival which is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and joy. It is celebrated in almost all parts of the country in myriad cultural forms, with great devotion, fervor & gaiety. It is celebrated with pomp in southern parts of the country as Pongal, and in Punjab is celebrated as Lohri & Maghi.
This event literally brings out the cultural unity and enthusiasm throughout the country. The festival of Makar Sankranti traditionally coincides with the beginning of the Sun's northward journey.
It is said that on the day of Makar Sankranti, the Sun enters the sphere of Capricorn zodiac known as Makar. Sankranti' signifies the movement of the Sun from one zodiac sign into another. Makar Sankranti is a harvest festival. It is celebrated to mark the arrival of spring season.
Lakhs of people take a dip in places like Ganga Sagar & Prayag and pray to Lord Sun. Taking a dip in the holy rivers on this day is regarded as most auspicious.
The auspicious day of Makar Sankranti marks the beginning of warmer and longer days as compared to nights. The festival is always celebrated with much excitement among all age groups and cultural groups. Flying kites are seen in the sky. This is done to please the Sun God. Even though the methods of celebrating differs from state to state they all come together for one cause and with pure heart celebrating this auspicious event.
