
Ram Navami is one of the most auspicious and important Hindu festivals. It celebrates the birth of Lord Ram, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu was the hero of the Ramayana,which is considered as being one of the most important events in the story of Hinduism.
Being a Spring festival, Ram Navami is celebrated in the months of March or April .
Celebrations start one week before the holy day with reading the story of the epic Ramayana. The day is dedicated to Lord Ram and people listen to the various stories of the God or recite the Rama Katha. They usually visit the temples to pray and seek blessings of Rama or either they can perform pujas at home. It is believed that Lord Rama accomplishes the wishes of all those devotees. Temples are decorated adoring the idol of Lord Rama. Many people also organize bhajans and kirtans in praise of the Lord.
Grand celebrations are held in Ayodhya, where Lord Ram was born, by thousands of devotees. The auspicious day is also known as Kalyanotsavambecause it's the day when Lord Ram and Sita got married. Many devotees keep fasts as it is said fasts can liberate from sins.
Devotees begin the day by offering a prayer to Sun and the prayers keeps going through all the day. They sing special verses in praise of Lord Rama or mantras. People go into processions by carrying the idols of Ram, his wife Sita, his brother Lakshman along with the devotee Hanuman or the people are being dressed up as them, recalling the story of Rama.
Ram Navami is a festival which brings thousands of people together. During the day, they organize buffets or exchange gifts. Devotees find important to help those in need and to bath in sacred rivers particularly in the river Sarayu, in Ayodhya, where Rama might have entered after his long reign of 10 000 years to take back his form of Vishnu.
