Episode begins in the Pandava camp, where Arjun says he will duel with Bhishma.
Virat says that Dhrishtadyumn must kill Drona, and they must have victory on the 2nd day to boost army morale, but Bhima feels that Dhrishtadyumn will need Arjun's help for this task.
Sahadev asks who will contain Bhishma if Arjun is fighting Drona? Krishna tells everyone that there is only one way to keep Bhishma away from the battlefield, by resorting to trickery. Yudhishtira says this is adharm, but Krishna reminds him that the war they are fighting is a result of adharma anyway.
Krishna says only 5 steps are needed to keep Bhishma away from the field and leave Duryodhan unprotected.
Sanjay describes the Pandava's war formation of the 2nd day to Dhritrashta. He says that Yudhishtira has been placed at the back, while Arjun and Bhima are on the front sides, and that this is the Karuncha vyuh (crane formation). Dhritrashta wants to know what formation Bhishma is using against the Pandavas.
Bhishma gives orders to his army, telling them which positions they will be fighting in. Both sides begin fighting once again. Abhimnayu challenges Shalya and they fight with arrows. Susharma challenges Arjun and tells him that the Trigata army is here only to fight Arjun. Abhimanyu tells Shalya that he will get an answer to yesterday's trickery. The lightning from Arjun's astra attacks Shalya and he falls out of his chariot. Sanjay tells Dhritrashta that there is fog all over the battlefield and he cannot see anything clearly, thanks to Arjun's astra. Krishna says it's time for the second step, keeping Bhishma and Drona away from Duryodhan. Yudhishtira says he is not ready as his mind does not accept what Krishna is asking him to do.
Krishna details his plan, where Yudhi is meant to attack Hastinapur so that Bhishma will follow him away from the battlefield. Yudhi says the rules of war state they can only fight on the battlefield, and refuses to leave the battlefield.
