Hello friends I was searching for information on begeting sons if a couple is unable to have children with each other. I read a long time back that a hindu couple can have an heir by 10 methods and it would be be their son or daughter and it would be dharm.

Therefore, I came accross inofrmation on Niyog so sharing with you.

Niyoga (Sanskrit: ) is an ancient Hindu tradition, in which a woman (whose husband is either incapable of fatherhood or has died without having a child) would request and appoint a person for helping her bear a child. According to this Hindu tradition the man who was appointed must be or would most likely be a revered person. There were various clauses associated with this process, as follows:

  1. The woman would agree for this only for the sake of rightfully having a child and not for pleasure.
  2. The appointed man would do this for Dharma, considering it as his duty to help the woman bear a child and not for pleasure.
  3. The child thus born would be considered the child of the husband-wife and not that of the appointed man.
  4. The appointed man would not seek any paternal relationship or attachment to this child in the future.
  5. To avoid misuse, a man was allowed a maximum of three times in his lifetime to be appointed in such a way.
  6. The act will be seen as that of Dharma and while doing so, the man and the wife will have only Dharma in their mind and not passion nor lust. The man will do it as a help to the woman in the name of God, whereas the woman will accept it only to bear the child for herself and her husband.

In Niyoga, the bodies were to be covered with "ghee" (so that lust may not take root in the minds of participants but actual act may take place for conception).

I am still searching for the information adn I will paste here once I found it.

@ Reshma difficult ? just think how it would have been impossible for a woman to do it with another man who's not her husband and especially with a sadhu who we give great respect but her apathy that she cant even say no to her in laws her husband

but you never know in those days mind set of people were very different and not at all rigid like today they were more flexible

@ anubharad Yes those days the civilization of Sanatan Dharm were not just advance but women had higher position and they would be supreme say for example Rajmata or Kunti kidimba many women in their house hold would dominate and in Devon ke dev mahadev the himan king would always ask and take advise of his wife Maina devi

these are just two examples I am giving read actual purans and epics then you would know that actually women enjoyed being supreme they were respected and give respect also and their loyalty they would surrender also with dignity and grace

it was those times which we can say they were fully civilized people in every field they were perfect science astrology education social structure was good manners laws civil laws norms security rules for wars from every point they were ahead from our civilization techniques also 😆

reshma I thought so too and it was present some sort of Maya take for example none of the none of Shiv and Parwati's kids are their biological children since Parwati never could give birht through her womb due to a curse given by Rati kamdev's wife when Shiv burnt him with his third eye

Ganesh was born out of mud from Parwati's ubtan her mail (dirt)
Kartike was born from semen of Shiv but never from womb of Parwati but this sperm was shifted from ocean to fish's stomach to sun's stomach finally landed with 6 kritika kumaries who brought him up

Hunauman ji was a bacheloret yes he had a son called angad he was born from ocean from hanuman's sweat in ocean

Andhak was result of his father's sweat nothing to do with Parwati

there are several examples where children have been born through maya rather then womb of a woman

may be a lot have to be read and learn then we might get our answer
but in those days sex was sacred and respected and a tool to increase population
it was not promiscous like it is today
