Niki, Colors tries to be modern even about their village serials, but they seem to err somehow in getting enough crores of viewers.
Star and Zee have most of their serials city-based, and managing to compromise between conservative and progressive. Much more conservative than progressive, but the total viewership is fantastic even at its low points.
One of Star's serials recently finished shooting a track, started shooting the next track which was originated in the specific ending of the previous track, articles were released about the next track, and then Star released TV promos asking its audience what the characters should do out of two options in the ongoing (previous) track. They knew damn well what the audience would want the characters to do, they had already shot it and proceeded from that into the next track.
That is clear understanding of viewership. Star's people are hardly ever online to interact with the public. The sites are mostly for videos and to announce, with asking what people think as a side-note. If something doesn't get good TRP, they change it immediately. The more major the timeslot, the better the TRP needed. And progressive audience howling doesn't get heard, the focus is on being as regressive as necessary to get viewers attached to the series, and then show modern ideas wrapped in conservative packaging so that the viewership stays excellent.
Star shifted its English programming and starting Star World so that Star Plus could focus only on Hindi serials. That worked out. They then tried to see if the cosmopolitan audience was enough by starting Star One. It didn't work, so they opted for a genre revamp. That didn't work either, then they opted for a total channel revamp with LifeOK no longer focussing mainly on cosmopolitan concepts. It hit success with DKDM.
Colors promotes its serials starting-time and couples every damn day, and asks for online opinion about everything. Their more progressive and modern ideas only get online support and TRP-flop, but they keep interacting under the impression that if people tell them what they want to hear about how great their idea is, it actually means viewership will increase adequately hugely.
Just compare the viewership of the two channels.
