"I want a child, goddamn it!" he screamed for the hundredth time, the impact of his voice shuddering window pains.
"And I can't give you one", she replied with equal vigor.
When Rishabh and Madhubala Kundra had been unable to conceive naturally after four years of marriage, they consulted a fertility doctor. Madhu had half suspected she'd come out barren and when her doubts materialized, she declared she had no further interest in pursuing treatment.
"The hormone shots, the invasive procedures, the constant stress is not something I can handle. Yes, it would be nice to have a kid but I won't die if I don't".
And that is what ticked Rishabh off.
"The fact that you won't even try. The simple fact that you can't bear an ounce of pain for me cuts...it bloody cuts like a knife!"
But what did he know. "You can just have an orgasm, it's me who has to bear the pain and I can't. I won't. I don't want a child that bad. Plus, we can always adopt, honey".
"Ha! Adopt? Do you think that's the real problem? The problem is not the child Madhu, it's that you are no longer willing to put in the effort in this marriage".
The situation escalated faster than either of them could comprehend.
"What? You are questioning our marriage based on a single disagreement between us? Do I have to say 'yes sir' to your every demand for us to survive together?"
Some more hurtful words were said and curses thrown around that they could never take back. Above all, one thing became clear that night- they had reached a point of no return.
The months following their confrontation in the clinic hallway grew gloomy by the hour. They had both exhausted their attempts at a compromise or even a slim chance of reconciliation. So, she drove him down to the same city hall where they signed their wedding papers and paid a $35 fee for an amicable divorce. Of course, the unforeseen ripping apart of this coveted union was less that amicable. It took their busy suburban town a month and a half to accept the shocking truth that their favourite crazy-in-love couple had split up.
This story follows the adventures of Rishabh and Madhubala as the navigate their new lives as recently divorced.
