Wedding tracks in daily soaps with their high voltage emotional drama set in the backdrop of lavish sets are sureshot TRP-trippers for Hindi general entertainment channels
For prime time dailies, a wedding track works as a TRP booster. With eight daily soaps on the small screen running the wedding track of their lead couples, the small screen is now a colourful riot of naach-gaana, bidaai rona-dhona and loads of drama.
Shows which have already started with wedding ceremonies include Ek Ghar Banauga, Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha 2, Chhanchhan, Madhubala Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, Bani Ishq Da Kalma, Qubool Hai and Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, with upcoming wedding tracks in Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai.
Producer Neelima Bajpai of Sapne Suhane... says, "It is sheer coincidence that so many shows have the same track at the same time. For us, it is a natural progression in the storyline. Viewers enjoy seeing wedding sequences because they relate to the characters."
About the popularity of a wedding sequence amongst audiences, Prashant Bhatt, programming head (fiction) of a Hindi GEC, says, "Indians love to watch wedding tracks because this is when they get maximum exposure to all kinds of festivities, celebrations of a number of rituals. A wedding track has the potential for big surprises and high drama."
Considering the wedding season is getting over in real life, why do so many shows have wedding tracks? Prashant says, "We plug in a wedding when the storyline demands it. Generally a wedding sequence is planned three-four weeks in advance." Neelima says, "A wedding track should not be added for just the sake of it. If the audience feels it's time the lead couple should tie the knot then should the story proceed with such a track. At the same time, a twist in the tale provides shock value. For every wedding sequence, there are special budgets allocated by channels and a lot of planning goes behind such tracks."
While weddings add TRP froth to a show, such sequences have become bigger and better over the last few years. Producer Sudhir Sharma of NBTNMKK-2, says, "Huge amounts of money are being pumped in for the wedding tracks. For all the occasions, we are planning to have a real wedding planner to give different themes for each ceremony to make the track look authentic."
And now which dream wedding track gets the most attention only TRPs will tell. Till then the audience can enjoy the knotty flavour right.
