Chapter 70
"Malik you have to meet Mr. Mohan Kundra. He is my business partner and close family friend. Our kids have grown up together. My daughter just adores Rishab and the two of them will be working very closely with Rishab from now on." Saying so Mr. Bhatia winked at Mr. Malik hinting as if something more than what was being said was going on. Mr. Bhatia turned his sights on to Sikander, who stood there like a stone statue trying to comprehend the situation. "And here is the man of the hour, my son, Sikander, soon to be your son-in-law." Sikander looked down at Mr. Malik as the other man moved forward to give his future son-in-law a hug. As he looked up his gaze met that of Rishab's who seemed to be shooting out hot flamed daggers dipped previously in a poisonous venom of the snake Inland Taipan and swallowed. (FYI - The Inland Taipan is the world's number 1# most deadly reptile. It is also known as the fierce snake, and it is found in Australia. A single bite delivered by an Inland Taipan can kill about 250,000 mice)
Madhu eyes moved like a pendulum from Rishab to her father and back. Rishab's level of agitation was sky rocketing and from the looks of it there was going to be an explosion soon. Madhu moved forward to talk to her father, when Mr. Bhatia moved in between them stopping her. "Madhu sweetheart, your father and I are extremely happy with this union. Just look at him, he is so happy, he seems to have lost 10 yrs off his age. He is as happy to gain a son as I am to have another daughter in my family." Mr. Bhatia said placing his hand over Madhu's head in blessing.
Madhu's voice of resistance hit a dean-end with Mr. Bhatia's words. She turned to look at her father. Her gaze moved over his face and she took in the happiness and delight. He did look happy and she was going to ruin it all. After so long he seemed to be truly happy and she was going to take it away from him. What kind of daughter was she? After all he had endured with the sudden death of her mother and then all the problems with her. How could she even think of breaking her promise to her mother? She quickly swallowed the grief that was threatening of over take her and tried to put on a semblance of a smile that she could muster.
Rishab could not take this any more and walked toward the entourage to have his say. But stopped short when Madhu turned towards him with pleading eyes which were threatening to spill any moment now. She silently begged him not to say anything or even worse do anything. Rishab could not take the silent tears in her eyes and they were what made him stop mid-step.
"So let us not wait any longer, because the wait is beginning to kill me and get this show on the road." Mr. Bhatia said trying to puppeteer the situation the way he wanted.
Rishab felt like he had been sucker punched. All the air and feelings were being pulled out of him as he watched Sikander slip a ring onto Madhu's finger. He gripped the wooded chair in front of him so hard cracks started to appear in it. Rishab turned his face away as Madhu moved forward with shaky fingers holding onto a ring. Fury flooded him, fury followed by despair. She was actually going through with it and had wanted him to do nothing about it. He wanted to do something but her pleading eyes stopped him and now he was just standing by and watching as the love of his life was going to officially belong to somebody else. He dimly felt the chair break under his hands but it did nothing to quell the fury burning him. Ice was trying to flood his veins so as to numb the pain but the fury was too strong. All he could hear were words from earlier, 'Rishab... In my life, my father's wishes and needs will always trump my needs. ALWAYS.' He wanted to run so badly, flee and pretend it was not happening.
Deepali shot a concerned look towards Rishab and moved towards him. It was obvious he like Sikander and her hadn't been expecting this turn of events. She gripped his hand and pressed on it trying to pass on some strength to him.
Mr. Bhatia looked around and smiled. Things were working out the way he wanted it to. As per the reports he had received, it had looked like Rishab and Madhu were deeply in love with each other. He has witnessed some of that fire in that office room that day and he was right about where it could have lead. He knew that Rishab was like a wild horse, impossible to break. If he couldn't go after him and win, it would have to be Madhu. First he approached Mr. Kundra and made it so that Deepali would be working closely with Rishab. Then with all the details he had found out about Madhu in hand he headed towards the Malik Residence. Hmm... it was difficult to get her file from her therapist's office, doctor-client privileged and all but if you pass on a little something something to the night janitor, he would do just about anything. He had the right ammunition he could use against her ' her deep rooted need to keep her father happy. With that in mind he approached Mr. Malik and worked his way to getting his son married off to Madhu. Then he worked towards getting them all together, to have his plan move along. When they all were together, as expected, Rishab and Madhu were tooo stunned to react. As the news began to settle in, he made his move. He approached Madhu just as she was going to put a glitch in his plans and rubbed her fathers happiness in her face. And watched as his words to her hit home and worked like a charm. He watched the non-verbal communication between Madhu and Rishab as she pleaded with him to to say or do anything. He watched the pain and despair evident on Rishab's face. And just as he hoped, he watched as Deepali went to him trying to share in his pain and support him through it. As he continued to watch his daughter and Rishab, he knew if he played his cards just right not today but someday Rishab would be his son-in-law and he, Mr. Bhatia would one day hold the reins of the Kundra Construction.
