Sometimes in the dead of the night, when he turns to his side he imagines that she is beside him. Her every curve fitting into their mattress, her hair spilled across their pillows, her arm barely touching his.

In the mornings when he wakes he likes to pretend that she's in the shower, so that the emptiness of his room has an excuse.

But of course there is no excuse.

Because she does not exist. Not in his room, not in his life.

Madhu is fading from him at a rapid pace, and there are nights where nightmares of her plague him. He is running in a dark forest and she is playfully running in front of him and yet every time he catches her, she slips from his grasp and each time she is further away from him.

The one that scares RK most is of Madhu in a white dress. She stands in the middle of his room and when he moves to touch her, his hand barely skimming the surface of her skin, she bleeds. Wherever he touches her, she bleeds right out, right into his hands.

And it is when her purity is drenched completely in the dying colour of her blood she chokes out, "You cannot touch me, I am not yours to touch."

When RK wakes in a heated attempt to breathe, her words are stinging in his ears, and he washes himself of her stains.

(There is no blood on him, for dreams are dreams, but he finds he is stained nonetheless. That Madhu has become something he simply cannot wash away, but he scrubs and scrubs and scrubs, until his skin is raw and red. He has become a madman against a madness of his doing)

When he catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror he swears for a second that Madhu is staring back. But the moment is fleeting and when he holds out his hand to touch her, she disappears. His scream splinters through the air and his fist is shattering the mirror, before he realizes what he is doing.

His blood is warm when it falls from the wound in his hand. Warm and real and hers.

It is a question only madmen are faced with. But if the blood is hers would you bleed yourself dry just to feel her again?
