WHILE Chembur mulgi Shveta Salve has been making splashes on the small screen, her good friend Aparna Tilak has been quietly 'marching' ahead with her current offering, Left Right Left, on Sab TV.
Aparna, who has been a resident of Maitri Park until her marriage (she now lives in Shivaji Park), has fond memories of a childhood spent doing "dhamaal and masti" at sarvajanik Ganesha functions and "being teachers' pet at St Anthony's School."
Talking about her first brush with tinsel town, Aparna says, "Basant theatre is where it all began. I was in Class 5 and I saw Rekha for the first time on 70 mm in Lawaaris. At that moment I made up my mind to become an actress. In fact, from then on, I would see every film of Rekha's in the theatre and my servant would escort me to the theatre more often than not."
Besides Rekha, Aparna had time for badminton and she represented St Anthony's at the state-level. "I was an extremely competitive badminton player and went on to play at the district- and state-level, " she says. Tilak also counts the guidance from school teachers Pushpa and Frances as priceless. "They were really well-groomed and had a commanding personality, " she says.
Outside the school, Aparna was the tomboy of her area. "I would participate in all society functions and festivals, be it Ganeshotsav, Holi or Durga Puja. My partners in crime were Sheetal, Seema and Dimple, who lived in the same building. How I wish I could take a break from work and revisit my childhood hangouts in Chembur," says Aparna.
Aparna started her career with modelling and ad assignments while studying at St Xavier's College. "It was easy for me to juggle studies and work as the place where I worked, Famous Studio, was nearby. I was a good student and my friends would tease me saying 'listen if you want to be part of our group you will have to be on the black list at least once'," laughs Aparna.
As for her role in Left Right Left, Aparna says, "My role in the serial is refreshingly different. The idea of wearing a uniform was appealing." As for her co-stars, "It's a fun-filled work environment with enthusiastic co-stars, including Rajeev Khandelwal. There was this scene where I had to speak chaste Punjabi and Rajeev helped me with my diction," says Aparna.
From the bubbly Dr Shalini to a negative role in an upcoming serial, Aparna is excited about her career. "In my upcoming serial, I play a negative character. It's interesting and I hope to do such diverse roles," she says.

"Recently I met my friend from school, Rekha Jacob, at a party. She is working with Sony. At another party, I met Shveta Salve and discovered she lives in Chembur too! We started chatting nine to a dozen, asking each other whether you know this person and that. I am planning to hit the hotspots of Chembur soon, with Shveta in tow. We are proud to be Chemburites. "
