One often gets to hear of stories of the infamous casting couch in films, but TV seems to be fast catching with the big screen in this aspect too. And like Bollywood, TV actors too are willing to do anything for an opportunity to bag a show.
The casting couch operates at all levels and is often disguised under 'seeking favours'. Most actors don't mind giving in to the demands of those who look promising enough to bag the roles and we couldn't resist but ask a few actors if they have ever been a victim of the casting couch.
Actress Shruti Bapna, seen in Saas Bina Sasural says, "I have heard of the casting couch in television too. But I guess, it's all about how you conduct yourself and how you approach people at the end of the day. There is no short cut to success but there are a few people who resort to the couch as a stepping stone to success."
Actor Arif Zakaria of Kaali, feels that one always has the choice to refuse untoward advances. "Though one keeps reading about the casting couch, I haven't yet met any actor who is a victim. But exploitation in any form is a reality in a huge and diverse industry like ours. So I don't discount the fact that casting couch exists, be it for men or women. But it takes two to tango ' if you consent to any form of exploitation, you will bear the brunt. Honestly, I wouldn't accept any indecent proposal," explains Arif when asked if he would give in to such demands, if promised a path-breaking role.
Says actor Mahhi Vij aka Nakusha of Laagi Tujhse Lagan, "I have heard of the couch's existence, but I haven't experienced it myself. How you carry yourself is what sets the boundary for people. If you are a no-nonsense type of a person, no one can mess around with you."
Actor Sumit Kaul is clear about his stand as he says, "I am sure it does exist. I fortunately have never been approached. It is just being plain opportunistic on the solicitor's side. The reason it is more prevalent is that this is a glamorous industry and most people are ready to go to great lengths to make a place for themselves, sometimes even resorting to giving in to the casting couch. Some perverts take undue advantage of the situation. If someone tries to act fresh with me I will ask him to buzz off before I hand him to the police."
