Okay seriously, here is a woman who single handedly changed the face of Indian television...from a poor cousin of the big screen ...with her lavish sets and big budgeted shows she made it a very sought after buisness in India. She hit the nail on the head, when she realized that most viewers are women and women love nothing more than the age old romantic love story... usually between the arrongant rich boy and poor innocent girl. She had the magic formula in her hand and hence her shows like Kutumb, Kaisa yeh pyar hai etc... were hits. That sense of a bit of that fantasy fairytale seen in these love stories, helped the viewers escape from their daily lives and go into a world of romance which until now only exsisted in books or movies. They could now be seen every day on our televisions. Also she knew that many viewers were house wives and hence dealt with family matters on a day to day basis. Bringing in the Saas bahu, "nook-jhooks" she brought the realism in her show, that the indian house wives could relate with and draw encouragement from the characters like... the never faltering and always winning Tulsi and Parawatis. Another reason for the success of her shows.
Above are stated some reasons that I believe made Ekta what she is today, a person who holds a lot of power over a medium that we are exposed to everyday and in a way influences us. I applaud her for her great efforts. She re-shaped things and now everyone is following what she does, with her super-hit formula.
But what goes up must come down. And recently I have noticed that Ekta is losing sight of what got her to the level she is at; the viewers and what they like to see. She has become so caught up with the idea of breaking records of having long running show and high TRP's that she will do anything to keep that going.
The evil women in her show can now be eighteen or eighty (age does not even matter as they all look the same), they have only one sole aim in life and that is the destruction of the main protaganist. There is nothing normal about these woman not their mental make up or physical, which loud bindis, long eye-lashes and cakes of eye-liner. Do such people really exist? Where is the reality any more?
It is known fact...the romance ends in her shows after it is realized by the man and the woman involved. The lovers never unite, even if they are bound in marriage, if they ever are...they never share a normal relationship and often their lives are filled with sorrow... this is not the fairy tale we try and escape to from our daily lives?
Serious issues like mentally incapable chilren (grown-ups), rape, mariatal abuse, surrogate mothers, adoption, etc are brought in but never dealt with in a sensible and sensitive manner they require to be. And do we really want to put the news-paper down, turn on a TV and watch the same things happen in the medium we once took comfort in to transfer us to a world of fantasy?
There are so many concepts that are yet to explored. There are many writers waiting to discovered, then why is that the things we have already witnessed on the big screen be immitated on the small one. Is the small screen once again at the mercy of it big brother, Bollywood? What has happened to Creativity? Wasn't it Ekta's creative vision to see a Kyunki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu thi...that started it all? Why must she now steal ideas from moives?
Why is it that one show, will have one house and an entire community living in that house, with the members of the family having parrallel lives and 8 stories running at one time. Has the Idea of doing once concept at a time, with few characters for one show that ends at a good point ever crossed Ekta's mind? She definately has the money, power, and the following in the industry to start a new trend. Doing a show, with creative stories, that only run till they keep the viewers entertained and happy. Why the generations of leap ...why not a new show instead? Has she ever thought that perhaps ending a show, and starting a new one will also give her beloved actors new characters to play which will keep them happy and may be they won't leave her....like they are recently doing? An actor is meant to play different characters... playing the same characters for many years... can get stagnating and frustrating for actors...they require job satisfaction too
And the viewers...how long can they sit glued to their TV, waiting and waiting for something new and refreshing...just the idea of a new concept excites us...hence we wait for a new show to start...prime example: Kasturi... yet we are soon losing hope...I know I have. I give Kasturi 50 episodes before it too is filled with characters that only annoy and a story line that only drags....
Ekta was a smart woman...what has happened? She needs a reality check and re-vamp just like many of her shows... it is up to her once again to give us something new and most importantly some ENTERTAINING... rest will follow...
I would love to know all your thoughts...as who knows her shows better than the ones who watch them....😊
