New bahu on the block

Tulsi, Parvati , Prerna.... Is Gauri next on Ekta Kapoor's fav list? Is she the next success story on Indian Television? With the imminent launch of Karam Apna Apna, NIDHI MITTAL explores the latest craze on prime time television

Tulsi was a bahu for every household in India. She became a name and an idol, thanks to Ekta Kapoor. The heights to which Parvati and Prerna reached are uncompared with any other success story in the Indian television history. But, now when people are getting tired of same faces on prime time shows, Ekta Kapoor is back with a bang. Her latest venture on Star Plus - Karam Apna Apna - has, as a protagonist, who is about to be another Tulsi in most of coming Balaji serials. Pallavi Subhash, alias Gauri, is the next flavour in the prime time platter.

So, what was the reaction of Balaji's next best bahu when she received this offer? "I was shocked when I got the offer. It is still taking for the news to seep in. I just can't wait for the launching episode." The excitement's pretty evident in the diva's voice.

Karam Apna Apna (KAA) is all about Gauri. "It is a story of survival through the eyes of Gauri. It's all about what influence everyone in the family has on her," says Geetanjali Tikekar, playing Maya in the serial.

KAA is a story of a middle class, likable and non-ambitious character-Gauri- who hails from Kolkata and puts her family's interest before anything else in life. Seems to be the same old formula, to relate the character with the primetime female viewers. But still characters claim a different streak in the same old storyline. "I will not say this is different, but the way serial has been picturised is quite new," says Pallavi. She adds further, "it's a simple story, simply told."

But what does she have to say about her comparison with the characters of Tulsi and Parvati? While claiming that she is certainly different from all of them, she asserts the comparisons are baseless. "They are icons in themselves and I am still searching for a foothold in the industry. People have reached this conclusion because I am Ektaji's latest leading lady," says Pallavi.

However, Balaji Telefilms has always been accused of playing favourites. "They've spoilt me too much, and that is why Balaji is always a priority," says Geetanjali, proudly.

Meanwhile, Pallavi Subhash claims that though her work has been greatly appreciated by Ekta Kapoor, "she is a very professional producer, and I respect her for that."

Well, grapevine has a different story to tell but surely Pallavi Subhash has her fingers crossed as Karam Apna Apna premieres on Star Plus on August 29, at 9:30 p.m. With all the popular faces of small screen, the cast of the show includes- Roopa Ganguly, Salil Ankola, Apara Mehta, Achint Kaur, Sumeet Sachdev & Delnaaz Paul.
