Awards with a difference
Actors don't get any, the characters they play do

June 05, 2005
THE night oozed glitz and glamour.
From the scintillating saris and glittering gagharas the actresses
donned to the grand pathan suits the hunks wore, the Vatika Shampoo
STAR Parivaar Awards 2005 in Mumbai last Friday was certainly a
night to remember.
For one thing, it had been postponed from Wednesday as a mark of
respect to Bollywood actor and union minister for sports and youth
affairs Sunil Dutt, who died of a heart attack that morning.
But when the show finally took place, it was an unforgettable
display of Bollywood fashion and spirit.
On display too was its celebration of the perfect parivaar (family).
Every night, Star TV's serial drama fans are taken on a roller
coaster ride of emotions while perched on their sofas, as the
characters evoke anger and sympathy through their heartrending
performances.
THE PERFECT FAMILY
To salute their hard work for entertaining them throughout the year,
viewers voted for their favourite characters: From the favourite
father, mother, daughter, sis-in-law and so on, to create the ideal
extended on-screen family.
The highly-rated awards show hands out trophies, not to actors, but
to the characters they portray.(dun know y ppl dun get this)š
Daily votes hit over 100,000 as fans frantically voted for their
favourite characters in 19 categories via SMS, e-mail and telephone
over a span of 15 days.
While most of the winners weren't surprising, there were some shocks
like Milee, who was slated to win the Favourite Newcomer award and
was in the lead for the first few days, but lost to Kavyanjali's
Anjali.
BIG WINNER WITH 5 AWARDS
However, the big winner of the night was the long-running serial
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi which bagged more than five awards.
Karan walked away with the Favourite Beta (son) award, Ganga with
the Favourite Devrani (wife of younger brother) award, Damini with
the Favourite Jethani (wife of older brother) award, Shobha with the
Favourite Nanad (husband's sister) award and Ansh with the Favourite
Khalnayak (villain) award.
Karan's win was no surprise.
Dressed tastefully in a printed shirt and jeans, he accepted the
award from co-stars Kamalika Guhathakurta and Jaya Bhattacharya and
shared his award with his wife Gauri (Pradhan) and family.
TIGHT REEL-LIFE FAMILY
Most of the tight-knit Kyunki team were in Mumbai to receive their
awards, except Ritu Choudhary, who plays Shobha, who couldn't make
it due to a back ailment.
There was even an ode to the Favourite Little Newcomer award which
went to Bhumi from Kyunki, whose on-screen mum, Rakshanda Khan,
presented the young girl the award.
Off-screen father Ronit Roy, whose wife Neelam just gave birth to a
baby girl, was also rewarded on-screen for his fatherly role on
Kasautii Zindagi Kay.
Perhaps as a gesture to soften reported tensions between him and
Ekta Kapoor over his announcement of his departure from the soap, he
graciously thanked the soap queen: 'Whatever happens tomorrow, my
family and I will be obligated to you forever, Ekta.'
TOUCHING
One by one, the small-screen stars graced the stage, with some
delivering touching thank-you speeches.
Big-screen favourite Farida Jalal, who won the Best Nani (maternal
grandmother) award for her role in Shararat thanked her own nani for
giving her inspiration for the role.
She said in a mixture of Hindi and English: 'This character reminds
me of my nani. I have moulded myself into this role. I regard this
award as a blessing from my nani.'
The audience was left on the edge of their seats before the
Favourite Couple was announced (Kumkum couple Juhi Parmar and
Hussain).š didnt karan n nandani win the award.. y did the news paper publish kumkumz n sumits nameš bare he achi mistake haiš kash ke yeh sach hotiš³
MULTI-TALENTED PERFORMERS
Tantalising the audience with their fiery performance of the Kaal
Dhamal number, they made sure they were remembered for more than
just their serial drama roles.
Shabbir Ahluwalia and Riva Bubber followed with a dazzling qawali
number from Main Hoon Na.
The soap stars, like Urvashi Dholakia from the popular Kasauti
Zindagi Kay, proved that like the stars that shone in the sky amid the breathless display of fireworks, that they too, are not likely
to fade out of viewers' minds so easily.
