Main Teri Parchhain Hoon

The weak point of most serials is bland writing. This one's no different. There's nothing remotely engaging nor amusing about the lighthearted banter between this bhai-bahen jodi or a morning chitchat between a doting husband and wife. Or yet another crowing saas cribbing 'Meri chai kahan hai?' while the docile daughter-in-law smiles in the face of adversity. Not to forget the Mr Bennet brand of father-in-laws and husbands.

Nothing much happens in the opening episode of Main Teri Parchhain Hoon besides establishing the parallel lives of two ladies, who we suspect will cross paths very soon. In Story 1, the mood is generally bouncy, which translates to on-tube commotion. Story 2 is a trite step-son and his wife get unfair treatment in the family.

Since the story is yet to unfold, a few more episodes will truly tell how good or bad Rajshri Productions' new offering post-Woh Rehnewali Mahalon Ki is. If these lackluster programs are any indication, NDTV Imagine has a long way before it satisfies the imagination or stirs your soul.

Say Shaava Shaava

Ah, the big one. Chat show rivals Karan Johar and Simi Garewal unite for Say Shaava Shaava, a dance spectacular that has only one thing on its side: the blessed fact that it'll end in less than a fortnight.

The concept is simple, and reality-show moronic: Johar has a team of TV stars -- Divyanka Tripathi, Juhi Parmar, Mouni Roy, Narayani Shastri -- who will take on Garewal's small-screen studs -- Sumeet Raghavan, Apurva Agnihotri, Aman Varma and Manish Goel -- over a period of 11 nights.

Dancing or singing? Here's to both, judged by people who have already announced their lack of capability in the field, except as people who, um, spend a lot of time with entertainers? Johar came off as classically sharp in his typically filmi manner, and the newly rejuvenated Simi wasn't unbearable, actually.

The performances, however, were. Save Sumeet Raghavan's attempt at hilarity, the boys were bad and the girls were worse, with a particular rendition of Barso re guaranteed to induce AR Rahman to violence. Either that or he'll send these kids admission forms to his new music school. Now, that would make for a fun reality show.
Dharam Veer

Then came Dharam Veer, the kind of overbudgeted show that makes you wish they'd just played a digitally restored version of the over-the-top Dharmendra-Jeetendra spectacular.

A show about two brothers -- set in what the production house, Sagar Arts, could ambiguously just refer to as 'kingly' times -- this is an inane drama with very impressive production values and absolutely horrendous acting.

Guys, just it being a period piece doesn't mean we have to recreate the sensibilities of our hackneyed historicals. This is one to avo

Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan

With major fanfare, new television channel NDTV Imagine kicked off at 7 pm on January 21 with a set of so-called sensational shows, mostly a mix of dancing and mythology.

Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan set the ball rolling, the industry's veteran choreographer starting a show where she would teach students to dance like famed Bollywood divas. In a country where young kids dance to Kajra Re in front of proud parents at family shindigs instead of reciting Alfred Noyes as used to be the norm, this is a scary concept.

It is also, obviously, a sound concept. Khan has choreographed lots, and there is a major market for this sort of thing. Khan, however, despite her Bollywood status, and her dhak-dhak moves seem dated at a time when the Shiamak Davars of the world showing off flying scissorkicks. The concept doesn't completely translate to the small screen with the lessons visibly inadequate and a woeful choice of subject matter.

It was obvious Saroj would start with a big one for the first episode, but a group of salwar-kameez clad newbies dying to giggle couldn't come close to pulling off Choli Ke Peechhe. It just further accentuated the gulf between normality and the ethereal Madhuri Dixit.
Ramayan

In the 80s when Indian Television was limited to Doordarshan and any form of episodic entertainment appeared like a blessing, Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan had no problem attaining legendary popularity. Even now, if you make a trip to Haridwar, you'll know how nothing has changed. Its memories remain immortal.

NDTV Imagine aims to change all that with its re-telling of Ramayan from the same production house -- Sagar Arts -- that gave us Arun Govil as Lord Rama. Alas, the new version is a tacky and uninspired affair. One would have expected more detailing in terms of art and grandeur. What you get, instead, is crude special effects depicting King Dashrath and his army walking through an artificial landscape and numerous fake, superimposed backgrounds.

Also, even if not much time is spent in establishing polite conversations and period serial decorum, the pace is generally drowsy.

The 'shudh Hindi' too takes a beating, what with, war-returned soldiers embracing their sons to exclaim 'Mera bacha'. What happened to all the 'putra', 'vatsa' and 'bhrathashrees' in the mythological vocabulary?

The ornate and embellished sets are average and don't particularly stand out. What does, is the loud costume jewellery, which one is accustomed to seeing on the saas bahus on every second serial, adorned by the three queens of Ayodhya -- Kaushalya, Sumitra and Keikayi.

The first episode basically revolves around Ayodhya King Dashrath pining for a son and how his wish comes true after performing a Putreshthi yagya to achieve the same. Ravindra Jain's music faithfully plays in the background. Dated treatment and expressionless actors make this Ramayan a challenge to get hooked on to.

Jasuben Jayantilal Joshi Ki Joint Family

Another entertainment house. Another disappointment. The producers of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai welcome you inside their latest offering, Jasuben Jayantilal Joshi Ki Joint Family. This Hum Saath Saath Hai of small screen revolves around a boisterous Gujarati household.

During the course of the first episode, we are introduced to the over enthusiastic inhabitants of this nutty khandaan gearing up to celebrate Shiva Parvati's marriage in their temple. It's quite predictable, really.

There is the traditional bahu, the dumb ones, the one who converses in bad English, the one who likes to litter, the one with bitter one-liners and the good doer. As for the men, there's the ever-so-romantic head of the family placing a floral creation in wifey's hair, a smiling mute chap, a lovestruck youngster, an agitated uncle, a warring Farsan shop owner, etc.

If the populated cast isn't daunting enough, the art design aims to give its viewer a visual paralysis with its loud green walls, bright yellow bedspreads and magenta coloured furniture, to name a few.

Amidst all this our titular heroine Jasuben pooh paahs about myths regarding superstitions and discrimination. There's more to this Dhokla platter, a painful Antakshri sequence wherein Saawariya's title song becomes Chandu Bhai ha-ha-ha. Unlike other hit Gujarati-themed socials -- Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka and Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, the acting here is below average and the chemistry between the family members is clearly non-existent.
