Boss under Bigg pressure

Driven to achieve a rise in TRPs, Sony's creative director Sikcand has allegedly been giving grief to his producers

After his spat with Ekta Kapoor and his subsequent move to Sony, the channel's senior creative director Sandiip Sikcand is in the news again. Reportedly, Sikcand has been giving a lot of grief to producers who are currently making serials for Sony. Industry insiders complain that he has been throwing his weight around.

A source in DJ's, a creative unit (makers of Jeete Hain Jiske Liye) says, "Sandiip is very interfering. He makes far too many changes in plots and ideas suggested by the creative teams. Sometimes he gets very adamant too and insists on having his way."

DJ's is not the only production house facing difficulties with Sandiip's behaviour. Sources say that even Maverick productions is facing a tough time. "Sandiip simply insists on changes. Some time back, Sandiip wanted Niyati's character in Kulvaddhu to develop into that of an ichchadhari nagin. Our creative team did not agree to this, and fireworks ensued," says our source.

A channel insider springs to Sikcand's defence and says, "Sandiip is a creative person. He is not in the wrong if he emphasises on quality and suggests certain changes. He too is under pressure. In the last week, no episode of a Sony serial has scored more than 2 in TRPs. Channel heads always have discussions with producers about the story tracks. It is normal to have disagreements but of late, there has been too much bad blood between him and the producers."

"Ever since Sandiip took over in August, there has been a lot of pressure on him. TRPs of on-going serials were dipping and the new ones failed to rise. Sandiip had to pay particular attention to Kaajjal, Bigg Boss and Kulvaddhu because these launched after he took over," adds another channel source.

It seems that the producers of Viruddh (a forthcoming show) and the Aamna Sharif-starrer (another forthcoming show) are miffed too. Sources say Sikcand's interference may well be the reason behind the delay plaguing these shows. Allegedly, Deeya Singh has been banned from attending any meeting.

Of course, most people choose to respond tactfully when asked about Sikcand's interfering attitude. Rekha Vaid, vice-president of Maverick refused to comment. Creative producer Persis Sigenporia of DJ says, "We have had no problems with Sandiip. Our association is going great and we appreciate his suggestions."

What does the object of the controversy, Sikcand, have to say about this? "We are all doing our work. No producer has come to me to complain about problems that I supposedly create. Moreover what happens here, happens at other channels too. Sony is on an upswing," he says.

sony & sandip are really interfering too much with their serials and serials Kulvaddhu has gone down in TRPs I feel sony & sandip should leave the production house to do the serials, I think Kulvaddhu is going on very well.
