An Adaptation/Remake gone all wrong

This is my first post here. I am trying my best to follow all rules.

The problem with today's shows is that they are all proposals. They never have the complete story before that start the show. They try to gauge the trend and then think of plots which is why we see characters in show not behaving the way they were established to. Secondly not every concept is a Mon-Fri concept. There are some stories that can't be stretched into a daily soap but as an hourly weekly show they could work wonder. This was one such story. They call this an adaptation of Dhoop Kinaare but they totally missed the point. Dhoop Kinare was about a couple with a age difference who take time to realize they they love each other, there was no-one opposing them. Only towards the end they realise they complete each other.

Here you start with the title "kuchh to log kahenge" you are already establishing opposition. That was never the point of the original and if it indeed was about "kuchh to log kahenge" then by ending the relationship as of now they are not even letting anyone say anything, I hope people understand what I mean. Only if they be together will they face opposition of people, not just family member who are way over the top in their reactions. I think Astitva did much better justice the age difference concept.

I saw Dhoop Kinare years ago in the late 80s and saw it again recently, whatever has been shown in KTLK so far has covered the entire Dhoop Kinare, (except for one sequence which would be part of Mallika's life in this case) has been covered. Now they don't have any reference point of where to head the show, hence they are coming up with these stupid tracks of suddenly turning a clean good friend into a negative obsessive lover.

The whole problem with today's TV is - MONDAY to FRIDAY. Why can't we have weekly shows, that way everyone will get a breather and time to work on the story-screenplay and not just shoot to fill 22 mins slot every day. Actors will able to give more to their characters, their work schedules will be rational and they won't have to leave shows due to ailments. I really hope the era of weekly shows comes back. It would really do TV a lot of good.

Entirely my opinion, not intended to offend anyone.

Agree with u.. that.. KTLK has ruined the spirit and essence of DK completely...! For a DK addict like myself.. KTLK is deffo not even remotely close to what DK was ...is and shall remain..!!

The problem with KTLK is that... the DK tracks which could have been developed well for eg

-- the Bomb blast track
-- the medical camp
-- the subtle way of realization of love with the hosp always at the background
-- the Irfan-Anjie track

have not been treated and presented well.. i.e. they neither have depth nor excitement..!

I agree with u when u say.. Astitva has dealt with age gap better.. indeed it has.. but i did not like th whole extra marital bit of Astitva which actually proved that age gap opposition of society becomes justified!

However what i feel that has badly gone awry with the show is the makers inability to realise the vision of DK and present it as a daily...! They hv butchered every character ... every track and at the end messed it all up!

Having said that... the DK 'no opposition' from family or society was much too idyllic and something that happens in films... ! Real life isnt that simple..and some amount of opposition is expected..! However in KTLK they hv even trivialised this aspect and made DB a very silly n OTT character ...!

Well, DK is a purane zamane ki story which is does nt suit today's world. First of all to make u clear its a adaptation nt remake. So adapting a story theme & trying to bring their own script, story & characters explorizations of the above said things totally depends on wat cvs,PH,channel wale & need of trp's wants.. Btw u made a point on the show timings that why can't it hv on bi weekly than mon-fri.. Well, i think u are nt used to viewing daily soaps or maybe dnt hv time for such daily based shows.. In general indian viewers like watching daily soaps..:) its their daily entertainment after the hard work we all do in our daily life.. I love ktlk totally.. I really dnt mind what all things were shown in DK. For most of the viewers In general, ktlk is wat they fell in love with.. All the actors in the shows are doing fab job.. We shud appreciate it..:) i wud say keeping watching ktlk & dnt worry wat ws shown in DK or try to compare these two shows..:)

I agree with every bit of what you said about KTLK...

Every one knows that this is a daily show...( the advancement in the technology in making the episodes is quicker..so it is not required to have an episode in a week's time.)...then why arent they ready with the story before hand? why Just-in-time cook up? Some rare episodes were dealt very beautifully, but most of it is crap. We were all stuck to KTLK due to that rare brilliance.

The tracks Tanu mentioned, medical camp and terrorist one have brought out the human side of the characters and etched their characters a great picture inside us...

Even our (original) writers are also capable of doing it...even on daily basis...Just run slow...treat every aspect logically and completely...Give actors space to think about their role and understanding of the character...Now-a-days I find even leads are clueless about what they are going to enact later and how...characterization is so awful...

Kank, wonderful post... Being a great fan of DK, who has watched in VCR days when my uncle got the Video tapes ... Seeing KTLK killing the essense of each and every character was a pain...
Tanu, you have also summed up very well and raised an important point of Society.. When I read about this show, I thought while keeping up the story line of DK, they are going to add the spice of Kuch toh log kahenge and we get a good strong story,,,,
But what we have seen is bitter treatment - Even the masses for whom the makers thought they are making this show, did not give the TRPs for this... If they stuck to entertaining elite viewers instead of masses, this show could have become one of the dream shows on Indian Telly.

KTLK is only an adaptation of DK. So its obvious it will differ.

Can't expect it to be the same.

There were several tracks which have been rushed in KTLK and not handled with finesse!!

Other then that too many BDs is one of the reasons too for down fall of KTLK.

Since March i think things have been looking up, though the nidhi/ashu separation was a dampener!!

I think the Ashu's Baba track is excellent!

Kanak call it coincidence or fate or anything else...But today i had gone to visit my friend and she and her mum were watching DK's DVD and I joined them...I had seen this show before KTLK started and it had impressed me immensely...After watching it again today I felt so nostalgic that I don't know how I am going to watch the future episodes of KTLK...

Ur views about the title and about daily soaps are absolutely true...And u have expressed the feelings of most of us in the few lines I have quoted above...

KTLK should have been made as a soap with limited number of episodes...I remember other Sony shows made by YRF where the number of episodes was fixed before they started...Powder, Khotte Sikke and Kismat were some such shows...Had they kept up to the original screenplay and shown the process of falling in love slowly I am sure they could have crossed 100-150 episodes before they both acknowledged that they loved each other...Then the house issue could have been brought up...which if cleverly shown could have been stretched to another 25-50 episodes...Not to mention other side-tracks...But the Cvs here were in such a hurry to show the love that they simply lost track of the show in their haste...

I can only say one thing...DK is a classic and i will never tire of seeing it...As for Rahat Kazmi a.k.a. Dr Ahmer...He is superb and will always live in our hearts as Dr Ahmer...

Anyways KTLK can still be salvaged if the CVs show a proper story-line and get done with the excessive negativity...
