Chapter 22- The First Date – The Aftermath!
The Recap:
As he was making his way back to the table, a sharp cry called him from behind when he had jst reached his table,"Oh! Dr. Ashutosh!" He turned back in surprise as it seemed pretty known and to his utter horror indeed it was Dr. Mehta waving at him cordially.
"Oh.. wat a surprise.. Dr. Ashutosh.. wat a surprise!" he cried as he strode spiritedly across to wer he was standing and shook his hand enthusiastically! He was a fellow doctor at KGH and had helped out Nidhi with her emergency on tht fateful night wen the goons had attacked Nidhi. Dr. Ashutosh was very thankful to him for helping out Nidhi and taking her side and supporting her actions against Dr. Mallika's accusations. Dr. Ashutosh shook back his hand warmly with a faint smile, but he was still in shock at his sudden appearance there and to make the matters worse, before he cud reply him anything or come out with any sort of excuse, along came his wife Dr. Mrs. Mehta who greeted him with equal warmth. Mrs. Mehta was a gynec and ran her own private clinic.
Both Dr. Mehta and his wife had been a member of his Doctor's Group, who met frequently over dinners and luncheons professionally. Dr. Ashutosh was never known to be a social person, but he had grown good acquaintance with his colleagues and the many members of his medical fraternity over the long years of his association with KGH. But they hardly knew anything abt his personal life with him being pretty reticent, reserved, and aloof kind of person. Dr. Ashutosh was noted for his upright character and gentlemanly demeanor and was highly respected. He was professionally deemed to b a very strict administrator but a well accomplished and esteemed surgeon and was considered to be one of the best neurosurgeons of Lucknow and his name was taken with some pride. When such was his reputation, finding him with a pretty young junior in some faraway restaurant was going to cause a shock wave among the members of his medical fraternity and it looked like Dr. Ashutosh hadn't given it much thot before planning such a date! The only blot, thts if u can call tht one, on his otherwise clean image was the rumor of him and Dr. Mallika's so-called affair, which wasn't a big deal as such in otherwise forward and educated fraternity and can b hardly termed as a blot on his image and besides most of the doctors felt Dr. Ashutosh's inclination towards Dr. Mallika was more of fship than anything else! Tho the rumor did make some good solid rounds probably coz Dr. Mallika had been the only actual close friend of Dr. Ashutosh from the medical fraternity at least! Most of thm were left surprised wen thy didn't hitch up inspite of thr such a long association and the mystery around Dr. Ashutosh's private life jst grew more deep!
"I wud've never thot I wud find u here at this dhaba at this hour of day?" asked Dr. Mehta. "well… I.." Ashutosh started but stammered and his voice trailed off. It was the most awkwardest moment of his life. He always knew how to carry himself well as the dean of KGH, as an accomplished surgeon, and as a reputed doctor but wen his professional persona mixed-up with his personal life this way, it always left him pretty confused and thn this was most abrupt one and it had baffled him completely!
"Oh I am sure U must b giving some pretty one a good company tonite…rite." Dr. Mehta asked joking riding on the news tht were making round in KGH lobbies these days. And it was due to the changes tht thy had observed in Dr. Ashutosh recently. He had been behaving not strangely but rather quite unlikely of tht of Dr. Ashutosh and tht had caught their attention. Dr. Ashutosh had been caught off-guard quite a few times lost in his own thots in those lonely breaks and was getting increasing number of calls lately on his cell phone and wen he went and picked it up in one far private corner of the hospital lobbies, it was bound to create suspicion and it had raised a new flutter of interest abt his personal life among the staff as well as his colleagues.
Dr. Rangnath had pointed it out to Dr. Ashutosh, but by the time he and Nidhi had taken corrective measures, thy had already stirred a buzz. Not that Dr. Nidhi wasn't under their radar of suspicion.. especially after the nite Dr. Ashutosh had saved Dr. Nidhi and a clear soft spot visible in Dr. Ashutosh for her thereafter, but it was the very nature of Dr. Nidhi that had not given it much substantial base! She had been very popular and adored for her charismatic bright and refreshing personality that it wud've been hard even for the Dr. Hardstone to not turn a bit soft towards her! Well, so was the case with Dr. Ashutosh and his certain someone. Intrigued, his colleagues had been indirectly teasing and nudging him to reveal, but he had been successful in dodging thm cleverly so far.
"Oh.. Oh.. Dr. Ashutosh.. ur face suggests tht indeed it is true!" Dr. Mehta laughed heartily at the thot of catching him redhanded! Dr. Mehta had always been a jolly good fellow and he was the one who teased Dr. Ashutosh most irrespective of how Dr. Ashutosh reacted to him. He had reminded Dr. Ashutosh of Armaan for so many times now! And Oh to his bad luck, out of his whole medical fraternity, Dr. Mehta had to turn up suddenly on his first very date with Nidhi! He sighed!. "Let me guess it's the one who keeps u pretty busy on phone nowadays rite" he continued with his teasing and promptly glanced at his table over his shoulders to catch the glimpse of tht beautiful dame who had created a history.. at least in the world surrounding Dr. Ashutosh! Dr. Ashutosh shifted on his spot uneasily. And it was Dr. Mehta's turn to b left dumbstruck! At any other time, Dr. Ashutosh wud've chuckled hard... such were Dr. Mehta's expressions! "Oh!!" he cud jst cry in reply as he saw Dr. Nidhi sitting on his table luking very very pretty. Her head busily buried into the menu card! "Dr. Nidhi!"he uttered a bit loudly to catch her attention and Dr. Ashutosh stiffened. He didn't know how she wud react.
"Ohh…. Dr. Nidhi.. u mean Dr. Nidhi Verma..Oh!?" suddenly came a loud surprised female cry from near wer Dr. Mehta was standing. Dr. Ashutosh rolled his eyes. It was Dr. Mrs. Mehta who had already approached their table even before Ashutosh cud prevent it! This was not a gud sign! He thot helplessly. Having known the couple for a quite a long time now, he pretty well knew Mrs. Mehta is going to dig this deep!
Nidhi looked up from the menu card and stared blankly at her! "Oh.. I am Dr. Aarti Mehta.. Mrs. Dr. Mohit Mehta.. how do you do Dr. Nidhi Verma?.. Dr. Mehta had told me abt tht dreadful nite! I must say u r quite a brave girl. and Oh… U luk extremely beautiful. Dr. Nidhi" greeted she warmly and extended her hand. "Oh fine.. thank u so much…err.. Dr. Mrs. Mehta." She flushed and glanced at Dr. Ashutosh. "Hope u r doing fine as well," she replied courteously getting up and again glanced at Dr. Ashutosh. Her eyes spotted Dr. Mehta standing beside him and an instant warm smile crept up her lips at his known face. She greeted him brightly and returned a rather excited face to awkward face of Dr. Ashutosh! Dr. Mehta approached her with the same warm greeting. "Hello Dr. Nidhi Verma.. I mst say I m quite surprised.. pleasantly surprised in fact" said he suggestively as he continued to study her. Nidhi jst replied with a shy smile as she continued to glance at Dr. Ashutosh fondly whose tongue jst seemed to have stuck in his mouth! She offered them to join the table, but Dr. Mehta excused themselves gauging Dr. Ashutosh's uncomfortable and awkward condition,"Oh no.. no.. please you enjoy urselves.. we have already a table over thr.."said he and pointed to a far away table. "No.. really.. we wudnt mind.." said Nidhi returning the formal cordiality. "Oh Sure!" replied Dr. Mrs. Mehta and Dr. Mehta rolled his eyes and signaled to her meaningfully, but she ignored him and pulled out a nearby chair to seat beside Dr. Nidhi. Ashutosh shifted uneasily on his spot again.
Mrs. Mehta introduced Nidhi to her 6-month-old little boy,"Hi.. meet my little cutesy boy.. Aru!" "Oh wow!.. he is soo soo cute!" Nidhi got more excited and she pulled at his soft cheeks and gave him a soft peck lovingly.."Oh….he is very cute.. isn't he?" she smiled brightly and asked Dr. Ashutosh, but he jst smiled faintly at her and glanced uncomfortably at Dr. Mehta. Dr. Mehta returned a shrug and smiled at him as they watched the two ladies warming up to a little chatter! "So tell me.. Dr. Nidhi.. for how long have you two been together?" asked Mrs. Mehta. "Jst for over 2 months" came a shy reply.. "Ohhh.. thts pretty fast I wud say Dr. Ashutosh!" uttered Mrs. Mehta and eyed at Dr. Ashutosh suggestively. Dr. Ashutosh was left red-faced. He looked at Nidhi. She was still smiling shyly and glancing at him fondly.. it didn't seem to bother her at all!
Dr. Mehta jst rolled his eyes at his wife and offered Dr. Ashutosh some respite by asking him to have a walk instead to discuss on some important professional matters! And to his relief, Dr. Mehta did jst tht and nothing more! It gave him some change and he engaged with him in some serious conversation. When they returned after a while, thy saw both women giggling and playing with little Aru. Ashutosh's eyes rested lovingly on Nidhi. She was holding little Aru and playing with him affectionately. Aru was nibbling at his thumb and was staring at Nidhi pretty cutely! Smiling occasionally to Nidhi's urging voice and pecking lips! Nidhi had been always gud with kids but he didn't knew tht she cud even charm a 6-month-old! Thy made such a cute picture tht Ashutosh cudnt get his eyes off of thm. Dr. Mehta coughed suggestively to grab his attention,"Well, Dr. Ashutosh I must say Dr. Nidhi is such a pretty thing and I am sure she is worth it! But Dr. Ashutosh," he hesitated a bit but then continued,"I know I shudnt interefere in ur personal matters bt as a well wisher and a longtime colleague I mst say tht I hope u realize how management is gonna take this news! U have a pretty bright career Dr. Ashutosh." Dr. Ashutosh sighed heavily and jst shrugged his shoulders. Dr. Mehta jst pursed his lips understandingly,"but.." he continued glancing at his wife.."Dr. Ashutosh.. I cannot promise.. u know how it goes with ladies.. its hard for thm to keep anything secret for long.." "thrs no need to" interrupted Dr. Ashutosh in a firm voice. "r u sure?" asked Dr. Mehta. Ashutosh jst smiled glancing over at Nidhi. "well well, I shud've guessed.. its Dr. Ashutosh afterall.. u very well know wat u r doing." Dr. Mehta replied sincerely, "well, I can jst wish u good luck Dr. Ashutosh. She is really a gud girl!" completed he and Dr. Ashutosh jst smiled back at him earnestly. "but u know u r going to b even more popular soon.. Dr. Ashutosh!" Dr. Mehta joked! Dr. Mehta had said it lightly bt he knew its seriousness and he didn't know how to reply to it!
And soon Mehtas returned to their own table and finally, Dr. Ashutosh was left alone with Nidhi. Nidhi luked at him questioningly at his thotful face. "I am sorry Nidhi!" he apologized. "For wat?"she asked "I.. I wasn't able to handle this situation.. I.." he really regretted acting so dumb infront of his colleagues "for being such a.. u know..acting like a dimwit!" "Oh c'mon.. don't b so harsh on urself.. u wernt!" she said emphatically. But she heard a disgruntled groan from him. "Oh u wer jst dumbfounded!" she tried to help him out,"If one of my colleagues.. Dr. Neha.. or Dr. Avinash..or anybody else from KGH.. suddenly popped up from nowhere and saw me with u this way, I wud b equally perplexed.. really!" but Dr. Ashutosh wasn't sure abt tht. She had been at such an ease with Mrs. Mehta or even infront of Dr. Mehta. She had no qualms abt accepting him openly in front of thm. He sighed. "u felt very bad at ur conduct?"asked she "yeah.." "how bad" "pretty bad" "do u wanna make up to me for tht?" "yeah.." "thn order some hot chocolate brownie.." she asked excitedly.. "thy look soo yummy.. and my mouth has already started watering!" and she smacked her lips excitedly. Ashutosh cudnt help chuckle! "so u like hot brownies!" "yeah.. pretty much anything with chocolate over it and if its hot.. its jst yumillicious!" "really?" he had a glint of mischief in his eyes and he cud almost visualize the chocolate spoiling Nidhi's lips and his eyes travelled to her lips inadvertently and she blushed hard, but Ashutosh came to her rescue,"Oh.. gud! I was jst thinking abt ordering some hot chocolate instead" "Nooo!,"she cried instantly and thy chuckled cutely.
As Nidhi indulged in her chocolate brownie enthusiastically offering Dr. Ashutosh some, he finally was able to relax a bit.. and actually he was feeling quite light.. the burden of revealing his r'ship with Nidhi to his colleagues was done with.. not tht he wanted it this way.. he wud've much preferred to introduce Nidhi more formally to his colleagues. He sighed bt it was a long journey on tht road! He didnt knew how much long wud it take to convince Nidhi's baba. He glanced at his watch. It was almost 10. Thy had been interrupted by Mehta couple and now it was getting late for Nidhi. His mind wandered over to Nidhi's baba. Surely, he must b expecting Nidhi's call or at least a msg as thy had gotten this late, but Nidhi had done neither of it and he didn't know y. Had she even told him abt this dinner date? He wondered confused as Nidhi continued with her dessert. He was so tempted to ask her, but he knew it wud b a bad move coz even Col. Verma hadnt called her up instead! It was strange and confusing! "emm hmm… don't get into tht thinking mode again please.. please.." she pleaded cutely spoiling her lips with chocolate in the process. He glanced at her lovingly and pointed at the spoiling. She rubbed away the chocolate from her lips gently as he continued to look over at her lovingly. "U not tired?"asked he. She chuckled,"who gets tired on thr date... Nope!"she answered. And he jst sighed and called the waiter for the check. "Oh.. I wish this nite wud never end.." she said. "Yeah.. sure.. we have a hospital to report to tomorrow Dr. Nidhi Verma!" "hmm.. sadly.." "wat?"he shrieked. "No..!"she chuckled.."I mean.. I so wanted to go for a dance as well?" "WAT?" he shrieked louder this time! "a dance.. better if its a ballroom dance.. how romantic!" and she gathered her chin in her hands and made a real moony face! "Please!" he cried. "wat… y…. don't u like to dance?" "Nidhi.. I jst don't like to dance.. I CANNOT dance!" "Nooo! U r not serious!" "Nidhi I am a surgeon not a dancer and I am 42 yrs old not some 24 yrs old!" "wat has dancing to do with age or profession.." "pretty much everything!" "thts ur perception.. its jst ur misconception!" "I don't think so!" "Oh.. please.." "I cant Nidhi.. its impossible!" "U can give it a try.. okay.. I have an idea.. lets join some couple dance classes.. thy r a rage these days!"she asked excitedly. "Couple dance classes.. r u even serious Nidhi!" "Yes.. pretty serious.. I m not joking.. I m damn serious!" "U r crazy!" "please…" "No!" "Please.. please.. pllleaassseee!" "Nidhi will u stop it please!" he finally said with some frustration! "fine!"cried she "fine!"replied he. "okay.. thn I am gonna dance with the most handsomest doctor in the upcoming convention!" she finally challenged him! He instantly felt extremely jealous and he cudnt hide it.. "really?" "Yeah.. R E A L L Y?" replied she and thy had to stop briefly as the waiter arrived with the change but thy continued on their way out. "Let us see.. who wud b so daring to do tht!" She cudnt help chuckle at his blatant jealousy! "I am seriously serious Nidhi!" "Really?' "Yeah.." "okay.. thn lets c.. If u wudnt dare, thn I do need to pick up someone who wud dare.. against u!" she said challenging him,"or else better option.. learn dancing!" "tht is not going to happen.." "emmm hmmm.." "Yeah.. Nidhi.. its jst not going to happen!" "Let us c Dr. Ashutosh.. let us C.. thrs still enuf time for u to chng ur mind.. let us say how brave enuf u can b to see me doing a couple dance for the first time in my life with someone else!" she chuckled mischeviously and he jst smiled back at her mischeviousness. She was a devil! Looking at her determination and stubbornness, he actually had a second thot abt it! Huh Dr. Ashutosh!, he thot to himself!
They had jst reached thr car wen another voice called him out,"Dr. Ashutosh!" He turned again and this time it was Aakash with his wife.. and… Dr. Mallika. He glanced at her unemotionally and greeted her brother Aakash more formally and then Dr. Mallika rather dryly. He cud c a hint of resent in her eyes and then suddenly she noticed Nidhi, who had jst strode from the other side of car to stand beside Dr. Ashutosh. "Hullo Dr. Mallika" she greeted with genuine courtesy. Dr. Mallika glanced at Dr. Nidhi with clear dislike, but she greeted her back with fakest of her smiles. "Meet Dr. Nidhi Verma." He introduced her to Aakash and instinctively put his arm around Nidhi. She looked at him with surprise initially, but then she felt sort of shy and without an attempt at any further conversation, Ashutosh simply excused thmselves. "U feeling okay Nidhi?" he asked with some concern as they settled into the car, but Nidhi blushed cutely and replied,"Yeah.. I guess..." Ashutosh glanced at her she was blushing too cutely! An instant loving smile crept up his lips and he asked chuckling,"Y r u blushing Nidhi?". She felt embarrassed and she jst shrugged her shoulders cutely. "U know u r too cute!" Ashutosh cudnt help himself say. Nidhi felt more shy and Ashutosh just kept chuckling lovingly at her shyness.
On their way back home, Nidhi was enjoying their ride to the fullest, tapping, humming, and swaying with the songs playing on the radio and Ashutosh wasn't able to control his eyes that were drifting on her over and over again, straying away from the road ahead and resting on the the most beautifulest thing in the world sitting rite nxt to him. He had seen all different forms of Nidhi today and a few tht he had never seen before and he hadn't known till this day tht he cud ever react this way to any girl in his life!. A quick electric sort of sensation ran thru him.. He sighed longingly. The day was ending and the craving for her had started creeping up again and the thots tht had started to appear with it were growing wilder! He shook his head determindedly to make it think straight when suddenly Nidhi popped up the same question,"U not thinking straight?" "Wat?"answered he and she chuckled naughtily. His expressions had been such tht the question had jst popped up in her mind! But he replied with an equally naughty smile,"the proper question wud b Dr. Nidhi Verma… u not able to think straight and why?" And her cheeks reddened. "But I m sure it's the nite!" and he looked around at the darkness enveloping thm and thn glanced over at Nidhi intensely and asked in pretty deceptive plain voice,"is it not?" But its effect on Nidhi was rippling. Her redness had deepened and she was unable to meet his eyes anymore. "Oh Nidhi.. God.. Don't u blush this way!" he suddenly cried in an unrestrained voice and suddenly lost the control over the steering wheel. The car swayed uncontrollably on the road, but thankfully the road was empty and he was able to steer it safely towards the left to the sides of the road. It stopped sharply with a screeching noise. "God!! I am sorry Nidhi," he cried instantly regretting. But Nidhi had went into sudden shock. "Nidhi?" he patted her cheeks repeatedly to try and bring her out of the shock! But wen she didn't, he got panicked! "Nidhi?" he cried again and patted more heavily, but she was jst staring blankly ahead.
He fumbled for the water bottle desperately in the car. God, he was panicking fast! He threw away the lid and splashed some water on her face. She winced after a few splashes and was brot out of the stupor. "Nidhi r u okay..Nidhi.." she heard a really concerned and urgent voice and she looked up at him with confused eyes, her mind still groggy. Her face had suddenly turned pale and she looked extremely sick! "Nidhi.. r u okay?" he patted her again and shook her head hard. Finally, she gained some sense and replied him with a nod. He tipped the bottle gently to her lips urging her to take a sip. She tried to push it away with feeble hands feeling extremely tired. Her eyes were feeling heavy and was about to slump on the head rest when he quickly grabbed it and laid it more softly. His heart rate had suddenly increased and his mind had went numb temporarily looking at her sunken face. He stared at her blankly for a while. He quickly rushed out of the car and opened up her door and the backseat door. He then rushed to her side again, unbuckled her carefully, and then picked her up gently and laid her on the backseat comfortably. "Nidhi.. talk to me Nidhi.." he urged her gently stooping over her and ran a soothing hand down her face and stared at her for awhile on her. Her face had suddenly turn dull and sunken from the bright and blushing one jst a minute ago. Little tears gathered in his eyes and he gently kissed her on the cheeks. She instantly stirred at his soft touch and slowly opened her tired eyes. "u okay Nidhi?" she heard his lovely voice again and she could feel his warm breath over her neck and she intinctively turned to look at him. She gazed in to his deep concerned eyes still in mild stupor and clutched feebly at his collar and tried to lift herself up, but he gently pushed her back into the seat and stroked her face gently,"No.. Nidhi..have some rest.. u feeling tired?" She moaned weakly and pulled at his collar again. He stared into her eyes fondly and gently pecked on her cheeks. He stroked her hair soothingly to comfort her. She luved his affectionate feel. She wriggled at his comforted stroke making. Her eyes began to close with heaviness. She pulled at his collars again and he bent his head again and pecked on her cheeks softly. He continued to stroke her hair gently till her eyes began to close and her face started to relax. He pulled out of the backseat and stared at her for awhile. She was now drifting into a comfortable sleep and she was breathing steadily. Her cheeks had regained some of its redness and he smiled at her compassionately and finally kissed her reddened cheeks before rushing back behind the steering wheel.
He called up her baba immediately and informed him abt Nidhi's condition but tht things were in control and that it wud take some time to reach home from where thy were as he wud b driving slowly. He checked on Nidhi inbetween to make sure she was doing okay. It was 11 when he finally reached her home. The streets were all deserted save for a few vehicles passing by the main road. He saw two worried figures, Nidhi's baba and chote sarkar, standing by the gate. They quickly threw open the gates and let the car in. Ashutosh parked by the side and unlocked the doors. Both Col. Verma and chote sarkar gave a faint cry of shock looking at Nidhi's pale face and limp body. Dr. Ashutosh was by their side immediately. He comforted Col. Verma and asked his permission to carry her inside. Chote Sarkar helped him and he gently picked her up and carried her down into the house. Col. Verma led them to her bedroom and put on the lights. Dr. Ashutosh laid her softly on her bed and adjusted the pillow beneath her head and sat by her side. "Wat happened to my daughter Dr. Ashutosh?" Col. Verma asked in distressed voice. "Sir, first I will need Nidhi's medical kit." He replied instead and instructed Chote Sarkar to bring in a glass of sweetened lime juice.
After 5 minutes, Dr. Ashutosh was done examining Nidhi medically. Satisfied, he offered her some more spoons of lime juice. She took some sips and slumped back in the pillow. He adjusted her head carefully and tucked her under covers and let her slumber into much needed sleep. He gave a long sigh and stared at her for a while. Her face had again turned pale and dull and he cudnt help himself stroking her pale cheeks with the back of his hand, but she didn't stir this time. It was so unlike his Nidhi.. wat he had felt jst an hour back. He suddenly felt extremely emotional. He took her hand and squeezed it gently. Col. Verma glanced over both of them and gave a soft sigh. Dr. Ashutosh realized wer he was. He quickly got up from her side giving Col. Verma a way and uttered a quick sorry in embarrassment. He gave her one last glance and waited for Col. Verma in the living room.
He was still in thots of this sudden turn of event, wen Nidhi's Dadi bua barged in suddenly from Nidhi's room shouting at Dr. Ashutosh,"Wat did u do to my little girl doctor!" Dr. Ashutosh stood confused. "Bua" cried Col. Verma from behind who had followed her from Nidhi's bedroom. "she jst fell ill. Dr. Ashutosh brot her in!" he came in Dr. Ashutosh's defence. "Oh.. Yog.. u r so dumb.. he is jst making things up…" She stopped jst short of Ashutosh and glared at him,"Dr. Ashutosh.. jst bcoz Nidhi didn't tell us.. don't u think v don't know who she went on dinner with.." and before Ashutosh cud offer any explanation, she started again,"Oh! I had never thot a person like can u b so sly and full of deceit! U call urself mentor.. Nidhi's senior.. God knows how u befooled and becharmed my little child behind our backs! Bt I gauged ur true intentions the moment I saw u.. a lone.. unmarried.. 42 yr old person like u can have bt one intention with a girl so yung and beautiful." Dr. Ashutosh suddenly felt extremely angry but he gulped down his anger for sake of Nidhi. "Bua please.. Dr. Ashutosh is a reputed doctor and stop shouting.. we have a sick child sleeping and it isn't gud thing to do in the middle of nite.. u want all neighbors to know wats happening in here!" Col. Verma tried to put some sense in bua's head. Bua lowered her voice a bit but continued,"huh.. reputed doctor.. if u haven't forgotten, v too have a reputation to protect Yog! We have a young daughter of marriageable age and wat does she do? Goes out on dinner with some gray haired middle age man and comes back carried in his arms in the middle of nite! And u let her go! Wat a show this is going to create in this society do u even realize Yog? And is this a way of ur so called gentleman?" and she glared at Dr. Ashutosh. "Bua enuf… please stop it!" Col.
