| Excerpts from an interview with the actress: Your fourth film 99.9 FM bombed badly at the box office. I was eagerly looking forward to the release of my fourth film 99.9 FM, directed by Sanjay Bhatia. It was an out and out multiplex film. It was basically a metro film, with me, Shawar Ali and Raima Sen. It is sad that though it was a new genre of film, painstakingly made with the kind of look, which has still not been tried in India, it didn't click. It was totally a musical film, though all of us had lip-synched for the numbers picturised on us. It was in one way also a grim film which set out to drive home the subtle message that one wrong step that you take can change your life overnight.. How insecure were you since Raima, who is a scene-stealer, had been pitted with you in 99.9 FM? I was not insecure at all that Raima may walk away with all the accolades. On the contrary, while working in 99.9 FM, I used to feel that it was a challenge for me as an actress to perform better if I am working with a good actress. Asambhav had several actors whereas 99.9 FM had only three characters. Till date only four films of yours have been released- 16 December, Asambhav, My Brother Nikhil and 99.9 FM. As an actor, I am very firm about not letting myself be typecast. In the wake of the release of my very first film 16 December, in which I had been teamed opposite Milind Soman, I did receive a lot of offers, but I said no to all of them because almost every other producer wanted me to play either a cop or a terrorist or commando kinds of roles. I am an outsider, not from within the film industry. 16 December wasn't a hardcore commercial film. Is it true that you have been cast opposite Aftab Shivdasani in Koyi Aap Sa? Yes. I have been teamed with Aftab Shivdasani, Himanshu Malik and Natassha for Koyi Aap Sa, which is being directed by Parto Mitra. It is a feel-good love story. I am just three and a half films old, since mine was a small role in My Brother Nikhil. It is for the first time that I am doing a proper "filmi" film like Koyi Aap Sa. How would you evaluate your growth as an actor from 16 December till Koyi Aap Sa? I was quite raw when I had made my debut with 16 December. It was more like a break from modeling at that time. Now I am learning as an actress. Shooting for Koyi Aap Sa, I know now more about camera, lighting etc besides emoting. I want people to watch me in films and tell me to what extent have I evolved as an actor when they watch me emote in Koyi Aap Sa. Do you like being referred to as a hot sex symbol? I do not have a problem being referred to as a sexy and hot actress. However the conception that you can be sexy only if you take off your clothes is wrong. I am of the strong opinion that either you have your sex appeal or not. Why do you think yester year actresses like Sridevi and Madhubala were considered sexy though they were fully clad? I have nothing against actresses like Mallika Sherawat and Neha Dhupia who do not mind shedding their clothes and inhibitions. Mallika and Neha know what their USP are, whereas I admit I do not have the guts to bare and dare. I'd rather like to be in the shoes of Waheeda Rehman and Tabu and rather be known as yet another Mallika Sherawat or say Neha Dhupia. One last question. Is it true that you are seeing Abhishek Bachchan? I am basically a very private person. All I can say right now is that Abhishek and I are just good friends. I am not comfortable talking about my personal life. I'd be happy if you do me a favour and restrict your questions just to my professional life. |
