Heer sighed as she waited for the moon to appear. For the first time in 6 years she finally knew what her husband looked like now—when her eyes closed to imagine him in front of her for Karva Chauth she wouldn't have to remember those old hurt eyes that she had seen the last time they were together but now she saw that he looked the same but there was a new hurt in his eyes; something she was sure she had caused him.
She was sitting at the window when she heard a car pull up outside the quarters she was in. Even though Soni had suggested for her to stay with them in the hotel, Heer had denied; saying she was more comfortable there.
"Shanta Tai, tayaari kyun nahi hui hain uss sangeet ke function ki?" She froze as she heard his husky voice in the front room.
"Woh sab—Heer ma'am sab kar rahi hain. Woh peeche wale kamre mein hain." She heard Shanta tai reply to him.
She quickly backed away from the window and took out her files and sat on her laptop typing away. She saw him enter the room through the corner of her eye and her posture relaxed rather than tensing up as it should have.
"Heer, mujhe tumse is shaadi ke baare mein baat karni hain," Prem spoke in a slow manner.
Heer glanced up at him and shrugged. "Bethiye,"
Prem sighed as he sat down in the chair in front of her. As he took in her surroundings, he saw a small pooja ki thali on the edge of the window and then he noticed her clothes. She had drapped herself in a gorgeous red sari. Today's karva chauth, His mind reminded him. For a moment his heart raced as he thought she might be fasting for him until he stopped and realized it was for Yuvraj.
"Kya baat karni hain?" Heer asked.
"Woh—tum sab akele kyun handle kar rahi ho? Humari hotel mein to kaafi wedding planners hain," Prem told her. "Aapni shaadi ko nahin plan karta akela,"
AAPNI shaadi? Heer gaped at the words she heard from Prem. Did he really think she was the one getting married? Was that way his face had changed the minute he saw her with Yuvraj at the airport? Couldn't he see her the faint red pencil mark on her forehead that she had still in his name; despite wanting to break her relation with him?
"Woh aapka problem nahin hain," Heer said slowly. She didn't want to clear his misunderstandings. She turned her eyes back down to her laptop hoping he'd understand that this conversation was over.
"Heer ma'am, chand nikal aaya!" Shanta tai called from the front room.
Heer's face lighted up ignoring the fact that Prem was sitting right across from her and ran to the window, covering her head with the pallu of her sari.
He sat there watching her. The happiness that reflected on her face when she heard; that was the Heer he loved. For a moment his heart hoped she was doing the vrat solely for him but that was when it dawned. Yuvraj the only name in her mind now he presumed.
He got up to leave when she let out a gasp.
Her thali fell to the floor with a thud and he turned around and ran to catch her before she hit the floor.
"Heer! Kya hua? Heer!" He was frantic. What had happened to her? She looked so happy and now he saw the frailness in her body. Her eyes were sullen. Her lips chapped and dry. Even her hair felt limp to him as he held her closer to his body.
He quickly glanced around for anything to help revive her when his eyes fell on the small steel cup of water. He took some and squirted it on her face only getting a few blinks in response. He sighed as he placed the cup to her lips and watched as she swallowed it hastily.
"Heer—tum theek ho na?" He sat her up with his arms still around her. He lifted her and placed her on the couch. "Isiliye main kehta tha ke yeh vrat mat karo," he stopped himself as he realized he had no right to tell her anything. "Sorry—main bhool gaya. Yeh vrat to Yuvraj ke liye hoga,"
A small smile formed at her lips and he was confused. "Tum muskura kyun rahi ho?"
She sighed as she knew what she was going to say was wrong. She'd probably even regret it soon but right now she had to say it.
"Vrat tumhare liye hain Prem,"
It felt like music to his ears. "What?" He needed to hear her say it again.
"Maine pichle che saal se tumhare liye karva chauth ke vrat rakha hain. Mujhe pata hain ke maine kaha tha ke main tumse koi rishta nahin rakhungi—lekin yeh kaise bhulati?"
He eliminated all the distance between them as he took her in his arms. "Heer—Heer..main tumse bahot pyar karta hoon. Aur tumhe pata nahin ke maine tumhe dhundne ki kitni koshish ki jab mujhe Ashlesha ka sach pata chala..."
"Uska sach?" Heer looked up from her place on his chest and asked.
He nodded. "Uss raat kuch bhi nahin hua tha. Woh sab ma ki saazish thi," He shook his head. "Maine unpe kitna vishwaas kiya tha," He sighed.
"Vishwaas nahin Prem. Tumne unpar ANDHA vishwaas kiya tha," Heer told him.
"Lekin ab sab theek hojayega," He said happily. "Tum mujhe mil gayi, mujhe aur kuch nahin chaiye,"
"Kuch nahin?" Heer asked keeping her eyes low cast. "Aapni beti bhi nahi?"
"Be—beti?" Prem was shell shocked. All these happy surprises in one day was too much to take. "Humari beti hain?"
Heer nodded shyly as she picked a picture off her table and showed it to him. "Yeh Chahat hain. Humari beti,"
Prem took one glance at the picture and knew she was their daughter. She had her mother's eyes and hair, but she had his smile. "Bahot khoobsurat hain, bilkul tumhari tara,"
Heer smiled as she settled back into his comforting arms.
