You're India's cultural ambassador abroad. What does that entail?

It entails a lot of responsibility and yet at the same time makes you feel proud of representing one of the world's largest democracies internationally. I was sent by ICCR as the cultural ambassador for Kathak to South Africa. I am looking forward to showcasing our Indian culture through its heritage dance form in other countries too.

You are a known television face. Does that help in your dance performances?

Yes. Television has given me a worldwide identity. An eight-year-old career in TV has definitely brought in larger audiences who want to experience my 24-year-old devotion to Kathak. I have performed all over India and in UK, Canada and the US, and the presence of my television fans everywhere is overwhelming.

At the moment you are playing an older character in Kayamath... but there are no grey streaks!

I think life on television today has most colours except grey. Young people in their late 20s are being given mothers' roles and the lead actors coming in are 16-year-olds. TV reflects what we as a society want to show, as well as what we want to see as an audience. It highlights gloss and glamour in most serials today, but subdues reality and all things natural.

There's buzz in the TV industry that you are expecting...

No I am not expecting. Yet! And I think this buzz has started just because I attended the opening of a kid's furniture shop which has just been started by a friend of mine. The only thing I am expecting right now is a great new role on television which can challenge the actor in me.

Are you in any way involved in your husband Vishwaas Paandya's movie?

On a personal level, I am involved in everything he does. As far as professional work is concerned I am more of a bouncing board I think. Most times I have to stay up late listening to his script ideas. But I am not complaining. Any achievement of his, will be my achievement too.
