Michi are kids in a way the reason they cherish simple moments and happiness. Milind is a simple man the reason he gets uneasy when someone teases him. I too wish Michi had known each other since childhood. Ali will be solved soon hopefully. 😊 Thank you for your detailed comments.

Disclaimer: I have researched quite a bit for the Teej Pooja mentioned in this part still there are chances of me going wrong at places since all the information gathered is from online resources so please bear with me.

Chp 19

Come Sunday Prachi was nervous rather than that scared with the fact that the chawl residents might just see through Milind's lie and then that would be an end to her stay. Also she did not want Milind to feel insulted because of her she had asked Naina about the rituals for the pooja since she was quite unaware of it Naina had in turn informed her that it was Teej puja. Attired in traditional sarees and lehangas, women congregate to worship Parvati Ma, who took 108 births to reunite with Lord Shiva. On this day, the idol of Goddess Parvati is bedecked with rich silk cloth and heavy jewelry. This day is considered very important as married women and engaged girls observe fast for long and healthy life of their husband and to-be-husband. Prachi had found the entire ritual quite interesting it would be her first commemoration of the Gods since she had never attended a single pooja in her entire life. True she had seen Kaka perform his daily prayers and then the prayers her father got conducted by the Brahmin pundit on her mother's death anniversary so that her soul rested in peace. But she had never attended a social gathering like this before she wondered if she would be able to complete all the rituals properly and maintain her facade throughout. She neither had fasted before and hoped she would pull through the day without committing any major blunders. Saturday was the pre fasting day the women had gathered to pay homage to their diety and then commence the fast from midnight onwards. Prachi had decided to give it her best shot if she would indeed have to attend the pooja to repay Milind's kindness she'd do it. Saturday evening she had joined the chawl women in their feast before the commencing of the fast and had quite a lovely time with Naina, Sheetal, Veena and Arti all lived in the same chawl and were the best of friends. Naina had introduced her to all of them and they had applied henna on Prachi's hands as it was customary to have the hands painted and Prachi had loved the idea watching Arti work in fascination. "Let it dry and wash it off before eating" Arti had told her expertly weaving intricate patterns on her palms. The feast had ended soon and Prachi had returned happy and content while the wait had nearly killed Milind "Itni der Prachi" So late Prachi he had remarked grumpily. "Sorry but main kiya kerun itna mazaa aa raha tha I was enjoying myself really see I got my hands painted" she had displayed her palms for his inspection. He had smiled was more intrigued to see a bold M engraved on her palm standing out amidst the floral pattern. "Yeh?" This? he had questioned eyebrows knitted in confusion "Woh pati key naam ka pehla akshar you'r name's first alphabet" she smiled and he had laughed aloud. "Asli pati ka likhwaati na mera kyun likhwaya" You should've gotten the real one's alphabet written then why mine? he had grinned "Ab yeh asli naqli kiya hota hai right now it's you" What's real and unreal you'r the one for now she had remarked carelessly though to Milind it had been a wish he longed to be fulfilled.

It had been a hard task for Prachi to avoid Milind all Sunday since he could not understand her loss of appetite for the entire day. "Prachi tuu theek to haina?" Are you feeling alright? he had inquired concerned. "Haan kyun?" Yes why? she had questioned "To kuch khaya kyun nahin, naashta nahin kiya ab khana nahin kha rahi... masla kiya hai?" Then why aren't you eating anything you didn't have breakfast now you'r not having dinner what's the problem? he had wanted a straight answer fearing she might be sick or not feeling well. "Woh mainey vrat rakha haina" Oh I'm fasting that's why she had informed him and his jaw had dropped open. "Kyun?" Why he had asked incedulously... "Kis ney kaha tha rakhney ko?" Who asked you to keep it and Prachi had batted her eyes in bewilderment "Sab ney rakha tha to rakhna zaruri tha na" Everyone was keeping it it's a ritual how could i not then? she had replied still confused at his ire. "Uff Prachi yeh natak hai sach nahin zindagi main vrath rakha hai woh bhi purey chaubees ghantey ka... sab bakwaas hai khana khao chal ker" Oh Prachi all this is an act not reality have you ever fasted in life that too for twenty four hours... just forget it and come for lunch he had commanded shocked at her predicament. How was he to explain that they were not married and she needn't keep the fast for him but she was adamant "Ab rakha hai to pura kerungi" I'll complete it now and that had irritated Milind further as he had stomped out of the house in anger. He had gone on his usual round with the taxi hoping to secure some cash for the day he usually didn't work on Sundays but the current situation had maddened him. He hadn't wanted her jeopardizing her health for his sake and she would not listen to him. Roaming street after street he drove around the city he had stopped at a tea stall to have a drink when he saw a man sit there slurping tea with a basket filled with colourful bangles. Forgetting about the tea he had walked upto him. "Yeh kitney kii hain?" How much are these? he had pointed towards a cluster of crimson bangles "Saahab aapkey liye sirf bees rupey" Just twenty rupees for you and Milind had paid for them smiling. They would go perfectly with her saree, that evening Naina had rapped at the door impatiently "Didi jaldi chalo puja shuru ho jaayegi" Didi come fast the prayers will commence soon she had called Prachi from the doorway. Milind had returned home keeping in mind that Prachi had to leave for the pooja and he'd need to look after Baba he sat on the sofa polishing his shoes. "Tuu baith main dekhta huun" Sit I'll see he had assured her entering the room he found Prachi wearing the saree he had bought her she looked different graceful rather more beautiful. Her face was devoid of makeup but it's innocence glowed off it her lustrous hair was pinned on either side she had found some of Sukriti's jewelry probably from the store room and had cleaned it. Milind remembered gifting Sukriti the gold plated necklace and earrings she currently wore she seemed unhappy though struggling with her blouse. "Tuu tayyar nahin hui Naina intezaar ker rahi hai tera" Aren't you ready yet Naina's waiting he had reminded her and she had nodded her head in assent. "Jii" Yes She had tried to insert the pins in her blouse once again unfortunately instead of the fabric the pin had pricked her soft flesh. She moaned in pain causing Milind to panic "Kiya hua?" What happened? he had asked in anguish "Kuch nahin" Nothing? she had tried to move away when he saw blood smear her blouse from the back. "Kiya ker rahi hai Prachi?" What the hell are you doing? he questioned shocked at her foolishness in an attempt to pin up her loose blouse she had pricked herself innumerable times and the wounds bled now. Snatching the pins from her hand he threw them away stomping outside he told Naina he'd bring Prachi to the temple himself. Taking the first aid kit he entered the room to see her wear the black beaded necklace he had brought remembering the essential items required for her to play her part effectively. "Betho" Sit he had ordered her his grim face indicated his furor and Prachi had assented even though she was apprehensive about him applying ointment to her. "Main khud laga..." I'll apply it my she had stated meekly only to look up to blazing eyes he had not repeated but she had understood his command sitting on the bed her back to him. "Kis gadhey ney kaha tha yeh pehenney ko, bola tha tujh sey apna size khareedna kiska size liya hai?" Who asked you wear this? I'd asked you to get your size who's size is this? he reprimanded her vehemently. Taking out the cotton wool he drenched it in dettol the blouse was loose enough for him to lift it a bit and watch her handiwork. Her milky skin had turned crimson pushing it further up he rolled the cloth a bit at the top tightening it around the ends so that it stayed put.

Dabbing the wounds with the ointment he felt her wince as it stung her she suppressed another moan biting her lip. "Prachi yeh nahin lag raha tha to bata deti na mujhey" If you couldn't do it you could've told me he was extremely unhappy to see her skin swell changing shades and wondered whether he should send her to the pooja at all. "Woh mera size nahin tha uskey paas" They didn't have my size she had informed him in a moist voice. "To uss waqt kyun nahin kaha duusri dukaan dekh letey" Why didn't you tell me then we could've gone to another shop he had chided her "Or agar nahin fit ho raha tha to bhar main daalti kuch or pehen leti yeh karney kii kiya zarurat thi" And if this wasn't fitting you could've worn something else was it so necessary to wear it blowing on the injury he tried to ease her pain taking out band aids he peeled them and pasted them in place. "Aap ney itney dil sey dilaayi thi nahin pehenti to aapka dil tuut jaata" You had bought it for me so lovingly if I hadn't worn it you'd have been heart broken she explained him and he had felt like smacking his forehead. "Main kahunga jaan dey dey to dey degi Prachi" I'll tell you die you'll die for me Prachi he had mocked her obedience "haan" yes she had replied in a serious tone that had caused Milind's fingers to pause momentarily. The conviction her voice bore had touched him she trusted him to the extent of putting her life in his hands. Rolling down her blouse he had turned her to face him "Pooja main jaana zaruri nahin Prachi" You don't have to go to the prayers he couldn't let her suffer at his hands. "Nahin Milind wahaan sab intizaar ker rahey hongey mera" No Milind everyone will be expecting me there she had negated his suggestion immediately. "Per Prachi takleef main to bhagwaan bhi maaf ker deta hai chor mat jaa main dekh luunga in logon ko" But Prachi even God forgives when in pain I'll see to them worry evident from his eyes." Aap bas issey pin up ker dijiye main chali jaungi" Just pin this up please and I'll leave she had tried to pacify him "Main jo keh raha huun samajh nahin aata... nahin jaa rahi kahin bhi yahin beth ghar main" Don't you understand what I'm saying... you'r not going anywhere sit at home he had shouted in frustration. "Per woh log baatein banaiengey Milind" People will talk about us then Milind she had reminded him "Bananey do yehi to aata hai unko" Let them that's all they know to do anyways he was furious at himself for coming up with this fib that was causing her such misery. "Milind" she had held his hand seating him beside her "Aap hii ney to kaha tha zindagi phoolon kii sej nahin, or har eik ko unkey hissey kii khushian bhi milti hain . Mujhey aapka yaqeen banaaye rakhna hai please mujh per apna vishvaas banaye rakhiye" You'r the one who told me life is not easy and we do get our share of happiness too. Let me uphold my trust in you and you maintain your's on me she had requested softly. Milind had found it difficult to condemn her pleas her kohl rimmed eyes were fixed on him her hands on his arm how could he refuse. She was right he had been the one to instill faith in her she needed to be able to prove herself to the world and to her ownself. Sighing he had opened the drawer to search for a needle and matching thread as he threaded the needle she had smiled all his wrath was just a charade to mask his concern for her. Pushing away her thick curtain of hair he exposed her back to him pleating the blouse he expertly sewed together the pleats from the ends and with a little effort the middle part. All this while he had tried to focus on the needle and not on the flawless creamy skin beneath the fabric cursing himself for even thinking about it when all he should be thinking of was her well being.

"Thank you" Prachi had smiled flinging her hair back she looked beautiful naiive and sweet and Milind wondered whether she could hear his heart beat in his chest like a stallion running wild. He averted his eyes to the figurines on the table "Eik ghantey baad sharafat sey ghar aa jaana nahin aayi to main khud aa jaunga leiney waisey bhi katha hii sunni hai na" One hour and I want you home else I'll come to get you besides you just have to listen to the story right he simply hadn't wanted her to leave her swollen skin fresh in his mind. "Uff Milind buhut chinta kertey hain aap I'll be fine don't worry" she had tried to pacify him. "I'm not hearing anything one hour and I want you back home" he had warned her carefully pinning her saree's pallu on her shoulder. He had then escorted her to the temple located near the chawl where the prayers were taking place. Once there Prachi had located Naina and in her association greeted the other women from the chawl. Milind had stood on the steps of the temple till she had taken her seat beside Naina and Sheetal who had accompanied their mothers to the prayer. Naina had caught Milind watching them and had waved to him assuring him that she would take care of his wife for him Milind had smiled in gratitude and had left. The pooja was interesting and surprisingly Prachi had enjoyed the entire affair. She had learnt a lot of her mythology and culture and felt enlightened thinking it wasn't a bad idea afterall an hour flew by and before she knew it Milind was there to take her back. He stood at the steps beckoning her to come while she kept gesticulating for him to leave. All this was witnessed by Mrs Sabarwal with keen eyes who was itching to gossip "Ab chali bhi jao najaaney kiya kaam hai becahrey ka" Go now look atthe poor soul God knows what calamity has befallen him she had teased Prachi sarcastically. All the other women gathered there had smiled at Milind's concern for Prachi while she had blushed in embarrassment sprinting up to him she had assured him "Milind I'm fine don't worry please.". "I'm not worrying and you'r not staying" he had held her hand he certainly did not find her presence there important. He would've walked off with her had Mrs Sabarwal not intervened "Aisa bhi kiya hai Milind bethney to do issey humaarey paas bhi hum bhi to bahu sey kuch baatein ker lein saara din to hoti hai tumhaarey saath." Oh Milind let us spend some time with you'r precious wife she does spend the whole day with you now doesn't she. A ripple of laughter had ruptured amidst the crowd and Milind had left Prachi's hand this was not the right time to take Prachi along with him the last thing he wished was to be suspected by the gossip queen herself. "Theek hai main chor deta huun per iski tabiyat kharab hai aap khayal rakhiyega iska" Fine I'll let her be but she's not feeling well so please take care of her he had told her before turning there was nothing more he could do. Before he could leave though he had heard Mrs Rawal's voice "Arey Prachi yeh set wohi to nahin jo Sukriti pehna kerti thii... kuch naya nahin dilaya Milind ney tujhey" Prachi isn't this the same necklace Sukriti used to wear... didn't Milind get you anything new? and Milind had felt saddened even though his resources were meagre he had endeavoured to keep Prachi happy . He would've left with a burdened heart had he not heard Prachi's voice float from behind "Milind jitna ker saktey hain kertey hain or in zewaron kii mujhey zarurat nahin. Mera asal zewar to Milind hain jo anmol hai uss sey zyaada ki mujhey chahat nahin" Milind does what he can do for me I do not require jewelry as Milind is my jewel rare and precious I do not need anything besides him with that she had regained her position near Naina. Turning around she had spotted Milind watch her with gratitude she had smiled giving him a thumbs up and he had mouthed a thank you in return his eyes reflective of his pride and joy.

Prachi had realized Milind's concern for her and had felt immense elation at his care he was a true friend and she was happy their friendship was strengthening day by day. The pooja had ended and Prachi had returned to the chawl with the other ladies to break her fast. She felt faint having never fasted but willed herself to move on as she reached the chawl premises she could no longer bear the fatigue and had fallen unconscious. Naina had run up to Milind's house asking him to come quick as Prachi had fainted in the courtyard Milind had sprinted down the stairs to see a small crowd gathered around her. "Prachi... Prachi " he had called out to her worriedly patting her cheeks in anguish as she stirred drowsily "Milind" she had murmured and he had lifted her in his arms. Bringing her home he had laid her on the bed gently rubbing her palms calling out to her all the while. She had finally come around and lay exhausted on the bed "I'm sorry Milind" she had apologized and Milind had placed his finger on her lips. "Baat mat kerna mujh sey..." Don't talk to me he had remarked in a hurt tone "Kyun Milind aap ab tak khafa hain mujh sey?" Are you still mad at me? she had questioned him in torment. He had tried to stand up when she had caught his hand in her own trying to sit up and he had been forced to seat himself again. "Main theek huun I'm fine Milind... I promise" she had attempted to persuade him while he could see that was not the case. There were still two hours to midnight and Milind had decided to divert her attention till the time he had shown her the bangles he had purchased that evening for her. "Merey liye!" For me she squealed happily and Milind's heart had done a somersault to watch her that way her hazel eyes shining like lamps. "Pehen na" Wear them he had requested and she had pushed them on the her fingers hurriedly. "Arey tuut jayegi" They'll break Milind had caught her soft hands in his own taking them from her he proceeded to gently slide them on her wrists going on with the task assidiously. She shook her hands in joy and laughed as they tinkled while Milind had revelled in her bliss. They had whiled away their time exchanging stories of their childhood. Milind had told her about the innumerous pranks he and Ali had pulled off as children. In return Prachi had narrated the few incidents she had managed to share with Ayesha and Kaka.

As the clock had struck twelve Milind had escorted her to the courtyard where all the husbands had congregated to break their wives fasts. It was a pleasant affair with the women happily chattering while their husbands provided them with the eatables set on a large table in the middle of the courtyard. Prachi had been excused from arrangements for the midnight feast since she was not feeling well but Sheetal and Naina had come to invite her and Milind to it. They had trooped down to see the other residents waiting for them and had joined them. A bronze platter had been handed to them filled with delicacies Milind had found a secluded corner near the steps and had guided Prachi to it who was ravenous by now. "Kiya khayegi pehley?" What will you eat before he had teased her and she had stared at him why couldn't they just start eating. She watched silently as he roved his eyes on the platter and had sighed wondering how long it would take him to finalize the item. Milind's smile had deepened as he took the jalebi and held it out to her "Kha lo Eat it I was joking" and she had smiled biting in it savouring the sweetmeat holding up a piece to him she had willed him to eat. "Tuu kha na You eat I'll eat later" Milind had denied he knew they would only get one platter and she was the one who had fasted she deserved it. "Aap ney bhi subeh chai key ilawa kuch nahin khaya ab khaiye warna main bhi nahin khaungi"
You haven't had anything except you'r morning tea now eat or I won't eat too she had threatened him and he had assented at once. "Prachi woh Pam ka kiya kerna hai?" What about Pam? Milind had asked as they ate "Kiya kerna hai matlab?" she had inquired. "Tuu ney kaha tha ussey yahaan ley aaun phir kuch kareingey main ley bhi aaya to tuu kiya kareigi?" You said if I brought her here you'd handle it what do you plan on doing? he had questioned since he planned on relieving his friend from his misery soon. "I'll talk to her Milind I think she should know about Ali's feelings for her before we proceed further. If he is not willing to bare his heart to her we'll have to create a situation where she knows his feelings without him knowing about it". Milind had been extremely pleased with her idea and had hoped they could pull it off triumphantly. As they sat feeding each other Arti had passed by them "Kyun didi mehendi ka rang kaisa aaya?" Did how is you'r henna's colour? she had asked Prachi who had displayed her palms to her cheerfully. "Kitna gehra hai na?" See how dark it is she had chirped and Arti had giggled "Woh to aana hii tha na apkey pati itna pyaar jo kertey hain aapsey" Well that had to be since you'r husband loves you so much and Prachi had lowered her eyes to her palms where the M stood out amidst the designs. "Didi chooriyaan buhut achi hain" The bangles are really beautiful Arti had complimented her and she had looked at Milind catching his eye "Inhon ney gift diya hai" He gifted them to me she had replied smiling at Milind there was a distinct light in her eyes that had not escaped him. As the night advanced the crowd had gradually dispersed not before blessing Prachi and Milind for a long and happy married life, they had also returned home their hearts brimming with happiness and contentment.
