'Aryan's teacher gave me an A'

Shah Rukh Khan on KBC, Dhoom 3 and Shilpa Shetty winning Big Brother
On son Aryan's reaction One day, Aryan came home from school and said his friend told him, "Hey Aryan, your dad has an awesome sense of humour." His teacher also gave me an 'A' grade for my hosting. On comparing the satisfaction he gets from his films vis-a-vis KBC After the first episode I got about 372 smses while for a super-duper hit film I get about 240 smses. A film goes out of your hands once you finish the shoot and it releases. The mistakes or the shortcomings of an episode can be worked upon in the next episode. One can always work and rework. On Shilpa Shetty winning Big Brother It's fantastic, though the reasons for her winning — the entire racism issue — is not good from our point of view. I have seen Celebrity Big Brother I am also told . of the kind of outrageous and rude things they do there on the show and even get away with it because that's the done thing.

Also, I hear that the lady who was responsible for hurting Shilpa was really apologetic for her behaviour. But it does feel great because Shilpa has been very graceful in her reactions and that grace is very Indian.

Shilpa was one of my first heroines. We worked in Baazigar together. All my heroines have made it big. Today, Shilpa too has done it. I feel proud of her.

On whether or not he's doing Dhoom 3 I haven't been asked to do Dhoom 3 in the first place. I have no idea how media is assuming things. So far, Adi (Aditya Chopra) has not mentioned it to me.

'Only viewers' opinion matters to me'

Shah Rukh Khan, the new host of Kaun Banega Crorepati, has been praised for his quirky and witty persona that is a marked contrast to the gravitas and presence of the previous host, Amitabh Bachchan. The naysayers have been silenced and the Badshah is feeling upbeat about the public's warm response to the show. In an exclusive interview, King Khan talks about comparisons to Big B, his family's take on the show and how it feels to be back on the small screen in a big way.

Big B hangover

There's nothing wrong in people wanting to compare me with him. I have a different personality and I am hosting the show in my own style. So comparisons are bound to happen. I have been asked whether Mr Bachchan has seen the show — I live quite far from his house and I have not been able to talk to him as yet. He might have not seen it because he is a busy actor. But honestly speaking and without sounding rude, to me the comments and reactions of common people are more important because the show is meant for them and therefore their comments will help me improve my anchoring as well as the overall quality of the show.

Fun and games

Through KBC I am talking to common people once again and meeting some of them in person. On the first day of shoot there were 250 people on the sets and I was so happy to see them. I like to connect with normal people and give them something that brings a smile to their faces. There is no taking away from the fact that KBC is a quiz show. That's the format of the show. It's not about banter. But yes, I have added a few easy moments to lighten the mood.

The contestants can be nervous about facing me, at least in the beginning. In fact, I spend about seven minutes with each contestant before asking them the first question. I try telling them that nothing is against them except the question. I make them feel easy, give them water, hug them so that they feel relaxed. And they do settle down after answering four or five questions. After that I start feeling nervous, because I don't want them to lose whatever they have earned. In fact, I start worrying once they have earned more than four-five lakhs because it is not small money to lose with one wrong answer.

Star style

People have commented on my style of anchoring besides my ties, clothes and hairstyle. Some find me a bit odd or too formal in suits and want me to wear jeans and a shirt. But then we have to follow the format of the show, which doesn't allow me to wear jeans and a shirt.

All in the family

My family likes the show. In fact, now they seem to respect my work more than before. They look up to me in awe. They also visit the KBC set quite often. My son sat on the hot seat yesterday. His friends find my sense of humour awesome.

King of TV?

In life I am both king as well as a humble pauper. But definitely I would like to be known as the king of Indian cinema. And yes, television too. All mediums are interlinked and inter-dependent. I am an entertainer. I have done theatre and if people like to see me doing theatre I would love to do it. People ask if I want to conquer Hollywood next. I don't. I want to work in Hindi films and want to take Indian cinema to the international platform.

Money talks

The television business is worth Rs. 17,000 crores as compared to about Rs 5,000 crores of business that cinema does. So obviously there is lot of money, not only for actors, hosts, directors, technicians and others working for TV but also for people who participate in television shows. KBC is the forerunner in the reality show genre and it is good that television is entertaining people with a varied fare. I think reality TV is creeping into people's lives.

He's pakka pakka good!

January 31, 2007

Shah Rukh admitted he doesn't have legs as long as Amitabh Bachchan, which is why he needs to slouch in the chair.

Watching him live on KBC proved to me why he is the numero uno entertainer of the country.

Suffering from a bad cold, Shah Rukh was constantly sipping hot ginger lemon tea in between takes. In fact, he has a nice little nook in the corner of the set where he drinks his tea, puffs on his ciggie and tries to relax before facing the camera again.

Since his favourite co-stars Rani and Kajol haven't still watched the show, Shah Rukh is happy with best friend Karan complimenting him on doing a good job. When asked if he would like to grill any Bollywood celebrity on the show, he cheekily said, "I would love more common people to get the opportunity to play the game.

We will have celebrity episodes in the future, but I want to meet more people from the rest of the country."

While his son Aryan has had the opportunity to step into his dad's shoes and play in the hot seat with friends, Khan's daughter Suhana says her schoolteacher has given dad a grade of '1A' for his performance on the show.

Looking totally surprised on hearing about Shilpa Shetty's win on the UK reality show Big Brother, Khan said he was happy that she had finally made it big and remembered how she had started her career with him in Baazigar.

Sitting opposite him in this particular episode was a stern teacher from MP who was colder than the A/C blast on the set! She not only stunned Shah Rukh and the audience by touching her husband's feet, but also pointed out how they had misspelt 'gentlemen' as 'gentleman' and made it seem like an unforgivable error! Khan retained his cool through the ordeal, constantly checking on his hot seat contestant and making her comfortable.

Comparisons are inevitable, but if you keep that aside and rate Shah Rukh based on what you see him do on stage, it is very difficult not to fall in love with his natural charm. Without trying too hard,

he makes the audience and the contestant forget for those few hours that he's King Khan. Instead, he behaves like he's your long lost friend who desperately wants you to take home the Rs 2 crore prize money!

By IndiaFM News Bureau, January 31, 2007 - 06:35 IST

We all know that Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar are good friends and when Karan invited Shah Rukh to be the guest on his show Koffee with Karan, Shah Rukh decided to return the favor by inviting Karan to be the first celebrity contestant on Kaun Banega Crorepati.

Karan Johar will be playing the game along with their common friend, Farah Khan. This episode will be shot today and it is reportedly going to be telecasted on February 11 as a Friendship special episode.

Karan Johar says that he is not prepared for it and will just go on the sets and play. This will be the first time that Karan will appear on KBC as participant. Last time he was seen among the audience supporting his friend Shah Rukh when King Khan participated as a contestant on the same show which was then hosted by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan.

Hum, Ash aur SRK

finding my place: Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan living together under the same roof? Yes, it's definitely happening! SRK's wax statue will soon be added to the collection at Madame Tussaud's in London.

But what we'd like to know is where SRK's statue will be placed — next to the Big B or next to Ash? Now that's a million dollar question!

KBC is a family show, says Shah Rukh

Mumbai, Jan 31: The Badshah of Bollywood and heart-throb of young generation Shah Rukh Khan has given the much-watched and acclaimed Kaun Banega Coroepati (KBC) -III a new look, new zest, new style, new flavour and getting applauds for his mesmerising performance from all quarters.

Speaking to Chronicle on KBC set, Shah Rukh admitted candidly that he was nervous about the show at the start but he did hard work with KBC team (Siddarth Basu and Sameer) to make the show different and effective from the very first episode with a new style by adding jokes suitably with the job.

He said that KBC III is more cleaner, crisper, quicker than earlier and he finds the new role more entertaining. It was TV which gave me a platform to carve out a niche and I am lucky that again TV has offered me good opportunity to reach, meet, joke and pinch the people with this show, he said.

"And I take KBC as family show. I love to make jokes with people and sometimes I call a middle-aged lady 'you look killing' but what I say I say in family spirit. My purpose is not to deride or hurt anybody." And now he finds himself quite changed than the Shah Rukh of seven years back who was rash and impatient and used to loose temper and for this change he bows his head to people who have made him so today.

He said he was on the KBC as guest when Big-B was its anchor but today by donning the mantle, he feels the crown is not easy but he works and will do more to take the show to a new height.

He told that he had an offer from Zee TV to do a parallel show to KBC when it was started first time but I did not accept it.

The cheerful SRK takes the challenge with joy and overcomes it dancing, laughing, smiling, chuckling and sometimes he quells embarrassment too sportingly if any.

When talk of roping in SRK as anchor of KBC in place of millennium star Amitabh Bachchan was going on, there was doubt whether SRK will live upto people's expectations, whether he will lift it to more dizzy height than Big-B. But now it is all history, Shah Rukh proved that he can rule hearts of TV viewers alike. And this is all due to his polite, jovial, friendly, to respond quickly, enough patience and above all take the every show as a game, attitude and temperament.

During the live shoot of KBC episode, this reporter had opportunity to see how he acts, reacts, meets, speaks to the contestans as well as he honours guests on the set.

The experience was superb. When he joined the flood-lit multi-coloured set, the cheer and laugh for him poured from everywhere and all desired to be near him. As the anchor of KBC, Shah Rukh shows tremendous patience and responds instantly to whoever wants to ask him or has any doubt, he does his best. He can do body massage, can do whatever the people want from him.

He is not performing a routine role of anchor nor confines him to mere quiz session but the genius SRK talks with the contestant before him on hot seat in his or her dialect and tries to make the moment more friendly and call computer by different names.

If contestant like Tarun Gagoi hailing from Assam, who did well, asks him to perform folk dance Bihu, he shows no hesitation but dances, cries with joy and entertains all and at the same time he has respect and peel of laughter for experienced man on the hot seat PS Krishnamurthy (Asst Commissioner Income Tax, New Delhi) as per his taste and choice or Rachana Sharma, a lecturer from Jind. When he asked her whether she is a strict or lenient teacher, She tells him that she is considered a strict teacher. Shah Rukh said she taught him to be patient.

He embraces the contestant if he or she fails with warmth and bids good bye with open heart. Besides, the person accompanying the contestants get a feel of friendly, jovial and mirthful moments with SRK. When he asks wife of Mridul Gogoi to sing a Hindi song, he gets quick positive response.

"The show is on and will go on. I am enjoying it. It is not for money nor fame nor to gain a footing. In fact, the task is novel, its spirit is unique and the charm and natural love he gets from the people during the KBC is unbelievable and I will do justice to them", said a chuckling SRK,

KBC: On screen and off!

Ladies and gentlemen... boys and girls... thank you for stopping by kbclive.com.

How you doing and what do you think of the show so far? And have you been catching up on the news here on KBClive?

I have been catching the telecast with my kids at home. Both of them are quite critical of my work and have opinion on everything I do. That's why I love sitting with them because I know I get to hear what I need to and not always what I want to! Thankfully both of them have been enjoying themselves and I hope you have too...

Nowadays in my house everything is a KBC game – my kids ask me questions and give me four options to choose from... It's fun as long as I have to give them the go ahead but when I need to turn them down for something I have a problem on my hand because no is not an option given to me! Ah… parenting...

I resume shooting today for the next lot of episodes and all the feedback I have received in the past week is going to help me a lot. So thank you for letting me know what you have liked and what you want me to change. A fan mentioned that I shouldn't give out massages but ask for some and I think that's a great idea considering my long schedules. But we might have a small problem at the end of it – I maybe so relaxed that I won't want to continue shooting!

I can hear my son calling out – I need to drop him off to school so I must log off.

I'll see you later tonight...

God bless... SRK

High on life!

Ladies and gentlemen... boys and girls... thank you for stopping by kbclive.com.

I hope life's been treating you well… this week has been quite hectic for me as I have begun shooting again. Last week I had a break and was just spending time with my family and friends but by the end of it I was quite bored!

I'm one of those people who thrive on work. Many people often ask me how I maintain such high energy levels. But I don't think it's just me. Every one on this set and not just here but people all over the world are like this. If you are happy doing what you do and it motivates you then you will jump out of bed every morning and get to work.

Also in my case I get bored very easily. So I need to keep doing a lot of things at one time so I can move from one to the other else if I had to do just one thing non-stop I doubt I'd be able to handle it.

You know Gauri's letter to Vasu got me and my friends thinking. Although the letter was about me, I think it applies to all men. Why are we like this? Do you know any man who picks up after himself? Or comes home at the very time he has promised his wife? Or remembers birthdays and anniversaries?

And if you do know one please ensure he doesn't meet my wife!

By the time I could find an answer to that, it was time for me to deal with another situation - Nawraj's loss. I think each of us have been at that stage in our lives where we are too young to care but I do know one thing – and I can vouch for it from my experience- we all need to start valuing what we have while it lasts. For e.g. in my youth, I had never seen money like this and probably that's why I value it so much today.

I'm sure Nawraj still will succeed in life but like I've said earlier please be a little careful. It's one right or wrong answer that can change your life – here on KBC and off it too!

And this week my message is for the youth of this country – go out there and make a mark for yourself. Achieve your dreams and be the person that will make your parents very proud!

I must sign off now but I hope to catch you later on tonight...

Lots of love

SRK

KBC News - Padmaja: I will buy an elephant with my 2 crores!

Hot Seat contestant Padmaja has a unique plan if she wins two crores

"If I win the two crores today I will buy an elephant," says teacher Padmaja who reached the hot seat last night. From Vashi, New Bombay, Padmaja adds that she is very fond of animals but loves elephants the most and that's why her plan to get herself an elephant.

Playing very well she reached 25 lakhs last night. She was already ecstatic as she could pay off her loan. "I am very happy because we have a home loan and with this money I can pay that off. That's a huge relief," she told KBClive.

Shah Rukh says he definitely enjoyed playing with Padmaja. "And when she told me at the end of the show that she would be able to pay off her loan I was very touched. I think that's one of the great things about this show. It allows us to achieve our dreams and ambitions."

"But you know her thought of having an elephant was different. And I'm a bit worried for her husband and son! Where will they go once the elephant comes?" adds SRK. "I think they are such gentle giants. And I've told my husband, once I get an elephant he will have to fend for himself as I will be too engrossed in it," she says with a shy smile as her husband, sitting in the audience, joins her in her quest to get an elephant.

Now if only all husbands were that supportive!
