For me the hand holding is the more disturbing because Ehsan is Katha's boss. That adds a power dynamic element also. This was one of the main problems that I had with Viaan giving the ONS offer (as he is her boss). But now the issue is not Viaan, it's Ehsan. So I hope that Viaan confronts Ehsan that he has no right to be cozy with an employee like this.

that guy was a bit of a lecher and so to be honest, was not surprised that he got fired. I was more surprised that he ticked off the men that they made the complaint rather than the women who were plainly ignoring him. what I heard was that during training, he would stand too closely in the guise of checking their programming (this was IT company). so more than the office, I was more impressed with the other men in the training who felt protective of the women colleagues and though this idiot needs to be chucked. if they didn't keep the complaints, the office would have ignored it. (this was a bakwas company to say the least and a terrible working experience)

back to the drama, weirdly enough I find ehsaan to be more intolerable compared to viaan. so even though viaan made the ONS offer, it was made as a personal thing -- he didn't crowd into her space and there was a formality to how he made it. she had the option to shut him down, to set terms and basically navigate how she saw fit. if she had stuck to her 'no', he wouldn't have come back and harassed her for it. viaan clearly has boundaries even when he was doing something unacceptable.

whereas ehsaan is clearly crossing boundaries. there have been a few times when he asked her to share stuff from her personal life. katha instead shuts him down with a smile, switches topics and has basically said nothing. one was the coffee, the second was the first time in office when he asked her about cancer, the third was during office lunch. so at least 3 times I can think of, she has indicated that she does not see him as a friend and has no interest in calling him or telling him anything. he is ignoring everything and going over to her house, now holding her hands. am afraid that katha needs to be a bit more blunt with ehsaan and tell him that she does not see him as a friend at all.

Wow it seems like Viaan will open up to Katha in a vulnerable state. 😭

what I appreciate is that it isn't planned or something with an objective. more like viaan unknowingly reveals a bit of himself and then realizes that is odd and shuts it down.

hand holding is too much and it is definitely crossing boundaries. ehsaan is in a romantic relationship in his own head but katha actually doesn't know or is aware or cares. it is highly inappropriate in the office and so is his request that she call him to share or ask for things -- she can do that if she wants to but she is not required to do anything he asks. 🤦‍♀️

in terms of your question, I would say that putting hands on shoulders or hugs or sitting close is not acceptable. in my first year of office, someone was fired because he was seen as being a bit too friendly -- he would put his arm around female trainees and call them "darling" "sweetheart" etc. it was the guys in the team who complained that his behaviour was too much. he was reprimanded but seemed to think nothing of it. since he ignored the first warning, he was fired suddenly.

it was highly dramatic that day and I still remember. they made the team sit in the conference team and we had no clue what was going on. the top managers didn't come and we were wondering if meeting was cancelled but they kept telling us to stay in the room. after about 2 hours of waiting and being confused, they came in and told us that the fella had been fired for this reason and had been removed from the premises. people were surprised to say the least.

people think our culture can be conservative but you know, sometimes it is better that way. so say vanakkam/namaste and do a formal hand shake or a light tap on shoulder. no hugs, no putting hands on shoulders or sitting too close -- keep those boundaries and ask when it is okay to breach. otherwise, stick to our vanakkam and save a headache.

Bold- Good that he was fired. Noone will tolerate such things.

In my office we have a senior manager who exactly behaves like this. But she is a lady manager. 😆 She gives preferences to boys😆 she will sit very close to male colleagues, will be touchy with them. Even during appraisal she gives them good ratings. She prefers to hang out with them, even guys take benefits from her. We have a drop box where we can put our complaints in it without revealing our names and ids. Last year she got highest numbers of complaints against her, even though she was not fired. 😕 woh abi bhi hamari comp mei hei, but works from a different location.

Namaste is the most appropriate way to greet anyone, but we don't do it at work place. So i am fine with handshake.
