This show's coming to an end. And, my feelings are pretty clear. But, amidst all the good, bad, ugly (subjective), there was one relationship, one arc that I really enjoyed. And it was between Mohini and Moloy. I have seen the show in pieces because frankly...but I never found myself skipping any of their scenes. And, day by day, and now as the story's coming to an end, they intrigued me to no end.
A man from humble means falls in love with a princess living in a gilded tower. Her father rejects him based on his status and he vows to rise through the ranks and win both him and her. And, so the defining arc of his entire life begins. He wins. Both him and her. The riches and the girl. The society's approval and the woman's heart.
But, this doesn't end here. Because, Mohini herself is such a complex character. Truly grey. And, Moloy sees it. He doesn't walk through their relationship with rose-tinted glasses. Neither does he chose ignorance over acknowledgement. He knows the depths Mohini can go to. He has seen them and he has time and again also witnessed the repercussions. But, perhaps, that is why this relationship is so intriguing.
There is a visible age difference between Moloy and Mohini. And, despite how the dynamic plays out in the show, with Mohini dominating the home front with a visible iron fist, she is quite hopelessly, vulnerably in love with her husband. Those absolute gorgeous and heartbreaking moments when Moloy has an accident, then he's in a coma. I think some of my most favorite moments are during the Bajaj track when Mohini is weeping against her husband's chest, comfortably wrapped in his embrace, or when the entire family is performing the aarti and is quite emotional, both torn and hopeful, when they help Moloy perform the aarti. That striking mortality and vulnerability isn't something you get to see a lot. Mohini, after all, is mammoth, a fortress, a staunch matriarch.
She's also extremely prejudiced. And, I enjoyed the altercations between both her and Moloy regarding that.
I think the one arc I was interested in was seeing how Moloy had actually gone about building his empire. Bajaj in his initial days talks about how Moloy beat Mohini's father or 'overtook' and there was definitely something there. Now, all you're left with is speculation. A 'what if'. Did Moloy have shades of grey to him? Did he indulge in muddier waters to get his heart's one true desire?
That would truly make these two one of a kind.
In my opinion, and the only lovestory that intrigued and fascinated me, was the one between these two. In a world as black and white as that of the Indian GEC dramas, the mother is either a villain or she's not. And the husband either is oblivious or detests her. But none of that mattered here. Moloy's love for Mohini is truly unconditional. He loves her, for her good, for her endearing vulnerability very few see, for the core of steel and poise she possesses, for the unabashed protectiveness and love she has for her family, but he also loves her for and despite all her shortcomings.
There are no justifications. There is only acceptance. And, so for me, this will always remain the one true love story in this show I truly enjoyed. Perhaps one I would've enjoyed even more with a little more exploration but what was given was lovely nonetheless. And, on this front, my complaints are far and few.
I think except for the slap scene, which I strongly condemn and DETEST and want to erase from my memory, these two have given me such delightful scenes. The chemistry was always so spot on!
So there is my ode. To Mohini and Moloy. A lifetime of companionship. Far from ideal but real all the same.
