Chapter 4
Prerna stepped out of her room in a hurry, she was trying to strap her watch on the wrist and failed to notice Anurag. She bumped into him and the watch fell from her hand, before she could bend and pick it Anurag picked it for her. Prerna almost snatched it from him and quickly strapped the watch.
‘Prerna, main…’
‘Mere paas waqt nahi hai Anurag tumhari baaton ke liye..’
Prerna tried to move past him but Anurag caught her hand, she shot a glare at him and he immediately let go of her.
‘Main bas tumse mafi mangna chahta tha, mere wajah se jo takleef tumhe hui..’
‘Huh.. maafi? Anurag tumhe lagta hai ki sirf tumhare maafi mangne se sab theek ho jayega? Mr Bajaj ki halat kitni kharab thi jante ho na tum? Meri beti puri raat ro rahi thi apne Papa ke liye vo bechari itni dari hui hai unke liye. Aur iss sab ke liye tum responsible ho’
She pointed a finger at him and Anurag lowered his eyes in shame, he opened his mouth to say something but Prerna continued with her rant
‘You were stupid enough to try and risk your life but unfortunately it is my husband and my daughter who are suffering in pain. You are responsible for all those precious tears that my daughter shed last night and I am sorry Mr Basu but meri beti ke aasnu ki keemat aap sirf ek sorry se nahi chuka sakte. Filhal mujhe apni beti ko school chodne jana hai aur phir mere husband ke paas jana hai. But this is not over, I will deal with you later’
Prerna stormed off without sparing a second glance at Anurag who stood dumbfounded at his spot. He had expected her to be mad at him, but not so mad. After having a quick breakfast Prerna left with Kukki, she could sense that her daughter was still upset and worried.
‘Kukki, Mamma said na that Papa is alright. Then why are you worried?’
She voiced Kukki’s thoughts as her daughter explained to her in gestures that she was missing her father and wanted to meet him. He was sick and if Kukki would be around, her father would feel better. She wanted to go to Rishabh instead of going to school. Prerna knew that she would feel terrible about this later but right now she could not take Kukki in front of Rishabh she swallowed the lump that formed in her throat and gave a small smile to Kukki
‘I know Beta, that Papa feels better when you are around him but he is in the hospital and kids cannot go there. Also, you know na that Papa would not want you to miss his school to be with him? So you go and study nicely, Mamma will take care of Papa and make sure that he recovers soon, taki vo jaldi se ghar aa jaye aur phir aap apna sara time Papa ke saath spend karna..’
After weighing her mother’s words for a moment Kukki nodded her head and hugged Prerna. In a few minutes they had reached Kukki’s school. With a quick peck on her mother’s cheek Kukki walked off the car and waved back at Prerna with a genuine smile on her face before she went inside the gate. Once her daughter was out of sight Prerna rolled the window up and leaned her head back, closing her eyes she finally let go of her tears.
Her daughter was in pain but even at this age she could hide it so well, Kukki was just like her father. Who never showed his real emotions to the world. Yes, it was true that she disliked this man when they met, like everyone else she assumed that he was a cruel man who had no heart or emotions. But when she saw him with Kukki that is when she came to know that he had a heart, which would beat only for his daughter. She had seen him on the verge of tears when Kukki was locked in the store room, she had seen him flinch in pain when she had changed his bandage after the accident which happened on Kukki’s birthday.
At the end of the day, even the great businessman Rishabh Bajaj was a human being and like anyone else he had emotions too. The only difference was that until now he knew how to hide them from the world.
-----
Before going straight to Rishabh’s room Prerna decided to visit his doctor first. She wanted an update on his health and also had a few questions to ask. The doctor assured her that his vitals looked better and his chances of recovery were bright
‘But doctor what about his memory?’
Prerna asked, she was thankful that Rishabh had not suffered any severe physical injury but his amnesia was a big concern for her
‘Mrs Bajaj, I am sorry but I can’t give you an assurance that aapke husband ko sab kuch jald se jald yaad aa jayega. Every case of amnesia is different, it depends from patient to patient. Kabhi kabhi patients ki memory recover hone main kuch mahine lag jate hain toh kabhi kuch saal and agar memory wapas aa bhi gai toh hum guarantee nahi de sakte ke unhe sab kuch yaad aa jayega. In fact, ek aachi baat ye hai ki Mr Bajaj ne uss din aapki shadi ki baat ko sunkar koi adverse reaction nahi diya. There were chances that he would have refused to believe you and become hyper, but he was very calm. It is a good sign, it means that agar hum unhe dheere dheere cheezain yaad dilane ki koshish karenge toh shayad unhe sab aa jaye. But again, unki memory puri tarah se kab wapas aayegi yeh main aapko confidence ke saath nahi bata sakta’
Thanking the doctor she walked out of his cabin absentmindedly. She tried to absorb his words and look at the positive side. There were chances that he could remember everything if she stayed calm and planned everything well. But it was going to be a difficult task at the same time, she had to be very very careful of what she would tell him and when.
Once outside Rishabh’s room, Prerna took a deep breath and walked inside the room. She saw him seated in the bed with a frown on his forehead.
‘Good Morning’
Prerna said cheerfully and saw his frown convert into a smile, one that reached his eyes
‘Good Morning, finally you are here. I was missing you’
If his comment had surprised Prerna even to the slightest she didn’t let it reflect on her face. She came and fixed his pillows.
‘Abh kaisa feel kar rahe hain aap?’
‘I feel much better now’
‘Good, did you have your breakfast?’
‘I had the fruits but I didn’t want to have Dalia’
Prerna looked at him disapprovingly before she walked to the other side of the room and picked his plate of breakfast that was still covered and kept. She came back and sat next to him, placing the plate in front of him as she gestured to him to eat. Rishabh looked at the food and cringed, he turned his face to the other side.
‘Yeh kya bachpana hai Mr Bajaj?’
‘Mujhe Dalia nahi khana hai’
‘But Mr Bajaj this is healthy..’
‘I had the fruits na’
‘Sirf fruits se kya hoga? Appko kitni strong medicines leni hai’
‘No. Main nahi khane wala yeh..’
Rishabh spoke in a childish way without turning to look at her. Prerna was surprised to see him behave like a child and throw tantrums to eat his food.
‘Mr Bajaj, I am not going to take no for an answer. Appko yeh Dalia finish karna hoga and I would suggest that you do it while it is hot, because once it gets cold it will be more tasteless’
She tried hard to convince him to eat but Rishabh was not ready to budge from his decision, hesitantly she cupped his face and made him look at her.
‘Please’
Prerna looked at him expectantly and hoped that Rishabh would agree to finish his breakfast. Though Rishabh was in no mood to have the tasteless food, he finally agreed after seeing the expressions on her face.
‘But one condition, I will eat this only if you agree to answer a few questions’
‘Okay!’
While Prerna fed him the first spoon of Dalia Rishabh literally gulped it and made a face once again, nevertheless he continued to eat and Prerna was preparing herself for the questions that he would shoot at her. After two or three bites he asked Prerna his first question
‘How did we meet?’
‘We met for the first time at your house, a few months ago. Main aapse ek favor mangne aai thi apne… apne ...kisi dost ... dost ke liye’
Prerna replied with a small smile on her face and fed him another spoon.
‘Okay. How and when did we start dating each other?’
‘Erm.. we didn’t date actually. We met and you just proposed the marriage to me’
Prerna said in a low voice and quickly got up with an excuse to get some water for him. She was purposely keeping her answers short and crisp. She couldn’t tell him in detail about the circumstances in which they got married. She handed him the glass of water and took her seat again
‘That’s it? I just proposed to you and you said yes?’
Rishabh asked in bewilderment and Prenra just nodded her head in response. She saw him smile before taking another sip of water.
‘Wow, we must be madly with each other then. To get married just like that..’
He almost muttered to himself but Prerna had heard it, she looked down and distracted herself by trying to pick the last few bits of grains on the spoon and fed it to Rishabh as soon as he lowered the glass, before he could ask her any other question.
‘Done. Aaj ke liye bas itna hi, baki sawal kal breakfast ke time puch lena’
Prerna thanked her stars that the nurse walked in at the same time to change his dressing.
------
It had been four days to the accident, Prerna would spend her nights on the hospital couch in Rishabh’s room and go home in the wee hours of the morning when he was asleep. She would freshen up, have breakfast with Kukki and come to the hospital after dropping her off at school to spend her day with Rishabh.
She was witnessing a totally different side of Rishabh now. It was as if he had changed as a person, when she asked the doctor about the same he said that maybe his amnesia had led to a change in Rishabh’s personality as well. Prerna sighed deeply, she was trying to get used to her husband’s weird attitude for the past few months and now she had to get used to his new personality.
During every meal Rishabh would give her a hard time, he would fuss about the tasteless food that the hospital served and how bland it could be. He was surprised when the other day Prerna informed him that he would love eating salads and sprouts as matter of fact because he was very health conscious.
Prerna had taken permission from the doctor to get Rishabh breakfast from home, she promised to bring something light and healthy. Hence she had made some upma for him in the morning and was really happy when she saw him relish it. They had a deal that everyday with breakfast Prerna would tell him something about his past. By now she had given him a brief about his business, she told him that he was a one of the most successful businessmen in the world. How he had an image of being the ruthless man but when it came to his family he was the sweetest person in the world. His family was his world.
‘Erm Prerna.. If I love my family so much and I am so close to them, then why hasn’t anyone come to visit me? Matlab, accident hue almost ek hafta hone aaya hai but kabhi ghar se koi aaya nahi..’
‘Actually vo Maasi aur Tanvi aana chahte the aap ko milne ke liye but Maasi ko halka cold hai so she said they’ll visit once she recovers’
Prerna gave him a small smile and looked at him as he just nodded his head dejectedly. She felt guilty for lying to him. Maasi and Tanvi were disturbed by the fact that Rishabh has lost his memory and they need some time to process it. Also, she was worried that they might unknowingly say something that could trigger an anxiety attack. But she was most guilty for having not told him about Kukki yet. She was still trying to figure out a way to disclose this news to him. She made it a point to discuss it with the doctor as soon as possible.
Her phone pinged and she saw a reminder of Kukki’s appointment with her doctor for later today. She decided that she would pick her up from school and get her here for the appointment directly. She just had to make an excuse to Rishabh and leave.
----
After her doctor’s appointment was over Prerna decided to let Kukki meet Rishabh. The nurse had informed her that he was asleep after having his last dose of medicine so Prerna thought that it would be a good idea. At least, Kukki could look at him from afar and feel a bit better. They were about to go inside the room when Prerna got a call from Kukki’s doctor that she had forgotten her file in the cabin.
‘Kukki, beta aap yahin rukho. Main file leke aati hun’
She left and took long steps to make it quick. Kukki was in a conflict, she knew that she should wait for her Mum to return but she was dying to meet her father. She thought for a second and then decided to go in, she would apologize to Prerna later for not listening to her. With great difficulty she managed to push the heavy door and walked inside but the room was empty.
Kukki took tiny steps and stood in the middle of the room. She heard the bathroom door click and saw Rishabh step out while wiping his hands with a small towel. Tears formed in her eyes, the fear of losing him and not having seen him for so many days led to an urge to hug him tightly but she couldn’t move from her spot.
Rishabh stopped in his tracks when he saw this little scared child with fat tears which were now rolling down her cheeks standing there in front of him. He wondered who she was and what she was doing here, he walked to her and sat on his knees to come to her level. With his thumb he wiped her tears. At her father’s touch Kukki finally crashed in his arms and sobbed. After a beat Rishabh returned the hug and started to rub her back. He didn’t know who this child was but her tears were hurting him, as if someone had stabbed him with a knife and started twisting it.
‘Ssshhh…kuch nahi hua hai..’
He lifted her in his arms and walked to his bed, he made Kukki sit on the bed and tried to break the hug but Kukki wasn’t ready to let go of him and sobbed harder.
‘Beta I know that you are scared but please stop crying’
He finally sat on the bed with Kukki in his arms as she hid her face in the crook of his neck and tried to control her tears. After a few moments she broke the hug and looked at her father. With her tiny hands she cupped his cheek and then looked at the bandage on his forehead, she touched it with her soft fingers but immediately withdrew her hand when she thought that she might cause him more pain. Rishabh understood her worry and gave her a sweet smile
‘It’s okay. Mujhe dard nahi ho raha..’
He looked at her innocent face and saw it become soft at his words, she placed her head on his chest and hugged him tightly once again. He smiled to himself but was confused at Kukki’s affection for him.
‘Waise beta yahan kya kar rahe ho? Aap akele aaye ho ya aap ke saath koi hai?’
Kukki broke the hug and looked at him, in her sign language she communicated to him that she had come with Prerna. But alas, Rishabh couldn’t understand what she was trying to say, he gave her an apologetic smile
‘Sorry beta but mujhe samajh nahi aaya..’
Kukki repeated her actions, this time she gestured in a slower speed hoping that Rishabh could understand her but he failed to decode her gestures once again. She was getting confused as to why was her father not able to understand what she was trying to say? He always understood her gestures and signs. She tried again and again, with every failed attempt Kukki felt her eyes getting teary again and Rishabh started to get frustrated
‘Why don’t you just speak something and answer my question?’
He spoke in a harsh tone which made Kukki flinch in fear, her tears rolled down her cheeks again and she sobbed. Rishabh mentally smacked himself for having made her cry. He was about to apologize to her when he heard Prerna’s voice from the door.
‘Vo issiliye chup hai because vo bol nahi sakti…’
Rishabh turned to her and was in complete shock, Kukki got off the bed and ran to Prerna who opened her arms to envelop her daughter. She hugged Kukki close to her heart and kissed the side of her hair. She broke the hug and cupped Kukki’s face; wiping the tears from her face, Prerna nodded her head negatively to signal Kukki to not cry more.
‘Bas, aur nahi rona. Kukki royegi toh Mamma ko bhi rona aayega…’
Prerna spoke in a childlike voice and pouted slightly, Kukki sniffed and nodded her head before she wiped Prerna’s tears as well. She gave her a weak smile and hugged her once again. Prerna looked at Rishabh whose eyes were now wide in shock. She picked kukki in her arms and walked to him. She stood in front of him and took a deep breath; closing her eyes she prayed to God, before she finally broke the silence that had filed the room
‘Yeh Kukki hai, hamari Beti..’
