'Put on a show'
" Gunni, black coffee for me!"rubbing her nape to ease down the sprouting pain Adhya dwindled the alloyed key around her index finger. She tilted her nob to the sides, when her eyes caught sight of Abhimanyu's gaze stuck on her with a smirk adoring his lips. Her lips unknowingly stretched into a sly smile, with crimson creeping from beneath her collagen.
"Good morning!"his sing-song overtly sweet amalgamated with those notorious dimples on his cheeks. He leaned over the door frame of kitchen with his arms knotted over his chest, and sighed in infatuation.
"Good morning! Hubby Abhi."she played along.
"Good morning!"another voice rung, making the duo turn their head towards the staircase as Vijay climbed down.
The notorious grins twirled to be fawning amused. A chortle yawn escaped her buccal, her drooping eyes flickering in the name for her deprived sleep. Adhya stretched her wrist heaving a deep sigh of fatigue and stood on her toes, with her lips parted.
"Jo... job, Dad!"Abhimanyu stuttered on receiving Vijay's jittery glare and cocked eyebrows. Adhya understood the pun intended in his silent query on hearing Abhimanyu's claim and straighten herself the very next moment.
"Erm... I was out...on duty."she completed with seeping embarrassment.Shaking his head in acknowledgement and biting his inner cheek to prevent chuckling on their worth watching embarrassed face,he acquired his pew. The mischief restricted previously was back in flow of his veins,as soon as her drowsy eyes met his,he winked at her leaving her slugglishly flushed.
"Milk!"her tonsils dried up with the volume she shrieked at the spilling milk kept on fire that the vitreous glass displayed from the living room. Abhimanyu's eyes widened at realisation as he rushed to switch the LPG supply off within seconds. He heaved a sigh of relief and so does she with Vijay being a silent spectator of all this chaos. "Happy Anniversary Abhi--Adhya!"Vijay chirped with a gleaming smile to notice their flurried expressions, Adhya's wrinkled prow and Abhimanyu greeting him with a straight face.
"What?"he asked innocently, for the unexpected reaction of the couple for his greet.
"Since last five minutes you didn't remember it and now...you are wishing when all this mess happened."Abhimanyu shrugged his shoulder in a half amusement while Adhya passed a tight-lipped smile as if on cue to agree with Abhimanyu's term when Vijay looked at her expectantly. "You people are so ungrateful-"his hands swung in air with his eyes oscillating between the two "-atleast I remembered".
"Anyway, thank you Dad!"Adhya beamed in her croaky vocals and rubbed her throat up-and-down to ease the gruffed pain. "Gunni-"her eyes roamed to the nooks of the house but she couldn't found her in sight "Where is Gunni,by the way?"
"Why you think I am inside the kitchen--boiling milk at eight when I had slept pretty late last night?"his sarcastic smile stretched which in turn flattened her lips in a straight line of grim.
"Who asked you to stay away from home out so long?"came her remark with a disinterested tone making up for the irritation she kept under guard.
"What to do you mean by that?...Of course I wasn't happy about it either but then it was because I have had a job to fulfil."he straighten his posture as the callous side of him kicked in for the call. "What if I would claim for the same, after all even you left for the case around two in the night? But then I am being understanding here for you and your job commitments."his ends of the eyes wrinkled for the squinting eyes he have been looking at her the way.
"Abhimanyu, can we just not fight today?"tears sprinted over her cornea while she watched a keen Vijay, witnessing their fight silently, with the corner of her eyes. Fights her common in couple, she warmly welcomed the fact but then including a third person as a witness to it wasn't something she favoured.
"You are blaming me now,as if I started this-"and before he could spell the evil out she released her lower lip from the torture of her teeth "Fine!...I was the one who started. But can we just not-"she gobbled the lump at the intersection of her vocals cords. Her shoulders hunched back in a mental defeat and she silently left for her room in the brink of the moment.
"She cares for you...a lot!"Vijay's acerbic wits challenged the numbness that silenced his rationality. Abhimanyu stood unmoved with numerous of thoughts striking over his work function but then the freedom to all of those was yet again a null. "You shouldn't have blasted like that after all...you know she seemed groggy and quite pissed off. Maybe because of her late night errand."Vijay sighed, as his fingers unknowingly went on the command to tap on the glass of table in anxiety.
"Look... Abhimanyu, she respects your job and it's complications but then all she is concerned about currently are your eating habits."his eyes darting deep on him, Abhimanyu ducked his head with realisation and silently walked up to him and acquired a seat. Heaving an audible breath, Abhimanyu preserved to give away his reaction with his palms masking his face and his shoulders mellowed down mildly.
"Look at yourself, see what you have become from past two weeks...You are no longer concern about your biceps-triceps or abs like you used to,then you are clearly not on your balanced diet lately and getting frail too, though not undernourishment for the diet plan you followed prior."his eyes widened at realisation on how everyone noticed every bit of his debonair for his health.
"I was just too absorbed for this case...it is really important."his tone defensive.
"I understand you... about that but then you should know that you need a proper sleep and diet to function efficient or--you know there's no use in just stressing yourself out for being to careworn."
"I guess...you need to preach her about understanding me too."his dactyls uncovered the guilt his expressions said it clear,as he slouched his chin on his fist supported by his elbow. "It really helped me."his amiable smile graced his lips and contagiously reflected on Vijay's lips too.
"Now,I got to see her for what she is up to?"saying so he discarded the chair and spun on his heels for the path to their bedroom.
There she laid senseless on bed,her torso stretched in diagonal with the feet touching another end and out of all her breathes erratically smooth with periodic deep inhalations and exhalations. He closed the door after him and tip toed to tower her lean figure whilst he encrusted her body under the duvet.
Sitting at the edge of the bed, next to her, he rummaged through her hair that were released from a tight bun just few minutes ago. Her amber uniform changed,he noticed, with the lilac coloured lining of her sweatshirt peeping. Her eyes swollen with petty pale dark circles lining her eye balls that clearly indicated it wasn't for the first time she had to give up her sleep for her job. He smiled apologetically, unsaid tears brimming up his orbs whilst he pressurised his tonsils to not let his sob escape. He simply bent and graced his lips on her crown, for quite a minute longer than usual before he confessed his love for her "I love you...too much but couldn't help hurting you anyway."
' Jodi Thor Dak Shoone Ko Na Ashi Tobe Ekla Cholo Re
Jodi Thor Dak Shoone Ko Na Ashi Tobe Ekla Cholo Re
Tobe Ekla Cholo, Ekla Cholo, Ekla Cholo, Ekla Cholo Re...' that's when she switched it to the green icon while taking in the fresh oxygen and curling her wrist being in the bed itself. A groggy yawn stretched out her body as she glanced sideways, probably in search of him. An audible voice drowning in her senses when she realised it to be a call and swiftly attached the cellphone to her ear.
"Yes?"her soar vocals evident.
"Good morning, ACP Sharma. DCP Narayan Tamankar this side."and the sharpness of his words were enough to set her straight and attentive.
"Good morning Sir!"her crispy salutation kicked in uneventfully.
"I am sad to inform you about your application for the off today has been cancelled as the new case has lined up-"he paused hearing her low gasp but further continued "and congratulations to you and your team for successfully arresting one of the robbers of Unital ATM of Vaashi branch, among the three."
She was too numb to react for being unknown to the success he was stating about. But she had to comply with her etiquettes"Thank you, sir!".
"Welcome!"saying so he declined the call, even before she could speak her mandatory 'Jai Hind'.
Detaching the cellphone from her pinna, the vibrant wallpaper caught her attention as she watched the intricate design of colours criss-crossing spellbound. "You are awake?"Abhimanyu's entry startled her for a second.
"No... it's my ghost."she smirked, and her tone challenging.
"Isn't that you who proposed not to fight...today?"he removed his palm from the pockets of his trouser and rubbed his temple thoughtfully.
"I do."she sighed, with sadness surfing "I was not intending to. Just that I was pissed off lately. You know how crazy I become when I am sleep deprived."
"With no doubt,I know how crazy you can be."he smiled closing the door of their walk-in closet.
"I thought you would disagree to this and would make me feel like that's not the case but-"
"Should I?"his eyebrows crooked, she excitedly nodded.
"Then I better not, in fact never."he added smirking.
"Anyway, why didn't you woke me up?"she asked discarding the duvet from her, unmindful. "Well, you know--"his temple wrinkled with his scrunched nose as he pretended to stutter "you know, I couldn't risk my life waking up the violent devil of your subconscious while you're asleep."
"That was not funny."
"It wasn't intended to."
"What's the time, anyway?"she shrugged her shoulders and discarded the bed in swift.
"Eleven... Maybe."he answered rubbing his stubbled chin wondering.
"So?...What are you wearing for the day out?"he beamed with his contagious joy but that couldn't last long when Adhya's eye caught the displayed time on her cellphone.
"It's half past eleven."she closed her eyes in regret.
"I am Sorry!"her eyes flinched open in an instant, watching him smile at her apologetically.
"I...I... didn't realise you were just concerned about my health-"he pouted"and I thought you are trying to be dominating."
"You thought that way?"she asked, carefree to mask that hurt in her tone.
"Sadly,I reacted that way but wasn't too thoughtful about the issue. I was just...like you sleep deprived, thinking about you-"he scrounged her in a hug" and then those dirty dreams played a trick." He confessed making her chuckle as she patted his chest playfully.
"Abhi?"
"Hmm..."
"Fights between couple is fine until they are within the walls of their room. All I want from you is to have control over your outrage in front of others if it's on me. I don't want any third person to witness what our relationship is like or we had a fight."she requested him earnestly.
"And I am sorry that our day is spoiled-"he detached her away from the hug and watched her expressions inquisitively whilst she pressed her lips in a grim line.
"My day off has been cancelled for the Vivaan Kapoor's mysterious murder case."she made an irritated face while Abhimanyu stood struck on his spot, his limbs weakened and his mind swimming to a mind numbing sensation.
"Vi...Vivaan Kapoor is dead?"his voice barely a whisper.
"You m-mean The Vivaan Kapoor?"
"Uh...yeah!"she walked to the bathroom and stood at the threshold facing him. "Last night when I told you about the opportunity I was indicating about this high profile case that came up."she closed her eyes praying for the peace to his soul "I know I shouldn't be that selfish but then...by gones are by gones and we should see the brighter side. This case is seriously going to help me with my promotion to Deputy COMMISSIONER OF Police."
He watched her smiling with his crinkled eyes as the truth sunk in his brain,"You can alter with Dr.Pathak's appointment for Dad today instead of tomorrow since our day is totally in the drain, as for now and moreover it's the last dose of his meds left."she articulated walking into the lavatory.
"Abhi...Abhi..."she called him out from inside, breaking his chain of thoughts and before he could bring himself to the notion of Vivaan Kapoor's death.
"Ye... yeah,Adhya!"he calmed his nerves down trying his level best not to reveal the strain his brain is incurring or else something would be out that he didn't want to be.
"Anything you need,Adhya?"he asked, though his body was shivering with unsaid fears as the sweat beads trickled down his forehead.
"Is it still raining or it's better now?"
He looked outside the window, "Well...erm...it rained heavily till eight but now it's mild."
"Uh-okay!But still...can you please dry my macintosh with the hair dryer or something? I forgot to spread it over the car roof to dry."she chimed at him and he left to help his darling with comprehension,or rather moved out to get himself stable and out of their sight before they notice the change in his demeanor.
"You seems to be worried,Abhi."she darted her eyes on his which flicked the next second, taking a cumber breath she continued"I am really...very sorry for the mess. I know how excited you were for today and so were I but, then this case is important. I love you,Abhi!" They stood in the deserted parking lot of the apartment they lived in,near to her car. Abhi leaned forward to hug her, confining her to his arms as the car frame backed her.
"I love you too,Adhya!"his choked vocals compelled her to skip a beat.
"What are you hiding Abhimanyu?"
"Nothing-"he sighed as her grip grew tighter than before and he knew she didn't buy that excuse "I was just hurt...hurt that you don't understand my situations but want me to fully support you when any problem arises. It was our first wedding anniversary but we couldn't even spend a day together for the sake of your job, and then you blame me for coming late."
"I...was-"her fragile words were cut off.
"I know you were concerned but then I too have a job and a case similarly important like this one to you."he further added, failing to mask the wreck in his voice. She was rendered speechless when the harsh realisation of words stroke her heart as if a piercing bullet, "Anyway, you should leave now. It's already twelve."he moved a step away from her while she watched his conscious moves.
"I have dried and kept your kempt macintosh on the passenger seat at front."he spoke with his crooked finger pointing through the fenestra behind her. But right now after his confession, she was too lost to check things out as she felt insecure of losing her most cherished being,he is.
"Bye,love!"he planted an osculation on her crown.
"Abhi-"she called for him in her feeble voice when he started to move towards the elevator. "Yo...you won't leave me;right?"her tears spilled from her waterline when she found him unmoved ,with his back facing her.
"I would never...no matter what comes up."he tilted his face an inch towards her with a disarming grin that melted her heart with love. "I love you."he mouthed feeble, with no sound resonating and she mirrored his gleaming smile though not heartfelt. In a swift, she wiped her trailing tears;breathed deep and then sat inside her car to drive away from the ramparts of her residence, their home.
Driving through the topsy turvy cults with the ugly thoughts invading her senses, she mentally battled and won above all to reach her premises of arrearage, the police headquarters of Mumbai Suburban branch. Banging the door shut, she breathed in the confidence of a cop as her postures unknowingly grew rigid and features, cold.
Unlike the tick-tock of her heels, her flat shoes dragged on the cemented flooring, "Senior Inspector Mehtaab Khan."she announced to the passing by constable while entering her cabin and on cue the constable went to call the former. She heaved a sigh when the pile of red, lilac, green files came into her sight resting on her desk.
A lot more work to be done is left.
Like a ritual, her eyes rotated for the search of a mirror hung on the left of her gazzetted chair with the tag written in arial bold red, 'If I am dressed properly?'. She adjusted the cap over her tight bun, and stretched the collar studded with the label of her being worthy of it.
"Sir?"a knock on the door drew her attention, as she permitted the entry of Mehtaab Khan and moved forward to acquire her chair.
"Good morning,Sir!"he beamed at her when she passed a firm smile with a nod and held her hand out to ask him for the seat.
"Thank you!"he forwarded the file he had in his hand to her whilst curiousity rushed in her veins.
"What about the proceedings of the ATM robbery case?"she looked into the file seeing the details of the amount of money stolen and the statements mentioned by the nearby shopkeepers along with the snaps of the CCTV footage installed by it. "Oh yeah...DCP sir informed that the team is successful in capturing one of the robbers."she chimed with a ghost of smile tugging at the edge of her lips, which blew a little wider when she saw Mehtaab Khan nodding to her.
"Congratulations!"she beamed and kept the file on her desk as she further continued "But don't get too deviated by this success there's a lot more to look forward to."
"Khan, I cannot trust anyone else with this task but you."she forwarded the piled up files to him as he seemingly watched in horror yet he shook his head in agreement," These chargedsheets are to be submitted in court by twenty seventh of this month so...you know, you have to pickup the pace while I and Patel look forward to Vivaan's case. And after these files, you can join us."her command felt plummy to him.
"Sir, I assure you to manage with this but there's something more I want to discuss to you about the ATM robbery case."seeing her nod he continued "Bauwa Singh, the robber we captured has totally refused to give his testimony against the other two of his mates or even reveal their names. We require you to conduct his testimony and if this opportunity failed somehow, we might have to give him a third degree."
"Well, you can definitely proceed for a third degree but before that I would want to take up his testimony."she declared after rounds of deep thinking.
"Sir... Kamble need to get that permission letter signed up for the agreement of IMEI code tracing."Mehtaab forwarded hesitantly.
"Well,he took the permission before he traced the cellphone; didn't he? I have signed it myself."Adhya pretended to be inquisitive,as the smirk played on her lips masking the fact about the permission not taken before tracing the cellphone and hearing so Mehtaab smiled in response wittingly playing along.
"Oh...yes! Sorry sir,I forgot."
"Now,I would request for your leave."he stood on his spot for salutation and took the pile of files with him.
"Sir,Mr.Nivaan Basu,ACP New Mumbai headquarters, has come to meet you. Shall I send him in now?"asked the constable standing at the threshold of her cabin the very moment Mehtaab Khan left.
Her prow scrunched up with her questioning gaze as she couldn't find a reason to his surprise visit,it took her minutes to compose herself to permit.
Few minutes later, another primly dressed man in his crisp white shirt paired with jet black trousers and a tanned leather jacket, knocked on her cabin door when she granted him entry. Nodding to each other they silently greeted; standing on her spot Adhya acknowledged his presence when Nivaan forward his palm for a formal or rather introductory handshake as she complied with it courteously.
"Nivaan Basu, ACP New Mumbai headquarters;CRIME BRANCH."
