'I use my spare time to seek work in films'
Ankur Nayyar reveals his Bollywood dreams and how he has avoided controversy, so far
Sapana Patil Poojary
Ankur Nayyar, the hunky television actor, prefers to let his work do the talking. After five years in the industry and with several shows to his credit, Ankur has now entered Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki post-leap.
It's been some time since you were seen on TV. Your last serial Koh-i-noor went off air in December 2005.
After Koh-i-noor, I decided to take a break. I thought this would be the best time to meet people and look for work in films. I have always wanted to act in films. In fact, I came to Mumbai from Delhi with the intention of acting in films. When I am doing serials, I am busy throughout the month and that leaves me no time to meet people and look for different kind of work. So I utilise my spare time to seek work in films.
Are there any developments on the film front?
I am talking to some people. Meanwhile, I accepted an offer to act as a college student in Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki. It may sound clichd but I haven't played such a role before. So I took it up. Since this is the only serial I am acting it, I'll have time to look for roles in films.
Having acted in several serials, you have failed to reach the status accorded to, say, Ronit Roy. Why is that?
That's because none of my serials have run for three or four years. If they had run for such a long time then I'm sure even my characters would have become popular. After Kasautii Zindagii Kay, I have played several roles.
Kasautii… seems to be the only saas-bahu serial you have acted in.
I prefer thrillers, where there's scope to perform. And I have also acted in some other saas-bahu sagas. For instance, I enjoyed working in Reth as it revolved around only three to four characters.
You have managed to stay away from controversies so far. Why do you maintain a low profile?
I have made it a habit to use my time constructively. My spare time is spent improvising my skills, meeting people and spending time on the sets. And I have always kept my personal life separate. I want my work to do the talking and not where I vacationed or how I spend time with my girl friend.
Your fans have a strong online presence. What do you do if they want to know about your personal life?
I am in touch with my fans. I have given them my e-mail address and I reply to them. But I never discuss my personal life with my fans.
How satisfying is acting on TV?
Television offers good exposure to the actors and amazing pay packages. What I like about films is that you get to play a particular character. TV and films are different genres. You can't compare the two. No matter how big a TV star is, he can't match the popularity a big film star commands.
How do you maintain your interest acting in the run-of-the-mill soaps?
When I start a new project, I promise to give it my best, and if it gets monotonous than I am not as enthused. I try to kill the monotony by taking regular breaks.
