- Chapter 2 -
I was drenched from head to toe in the most heaviest showers London had to bring. I mentally cursed myself for not bringing a umbrella. I dashed to the nearest cafe to hide under. It was London after all, moody as it can get. My phone started vibrating and I instantly knew it was Navya
" Babe! Babe where have you been hiding all these days?" Navya asked furiously. Navya was definitely at Alya's house judging by the loud party music.
" In london."
" Shut your sarcastic ass up. Sam was telling me your mom was hooking you up with another guy again." Sam just can't keep things to herself for too long, I guess.
"Hmm" I finally replied.
" Well...was he hot?" I could hear Alya's childlike giggles at the other end.
" Navya!" I exclaimed. Rust tan eyes flashed before me once again. I would be lying if I said he wasn't devastatingly attractive. I would also be lying if I said I hadn't thought about him all these days. Why was he so rude? Did he suffer from PMS like girls do? Neither one of us liked the idea of having our parents forcing us to meet a stranger, but he could've had the courtesy to atleast remain polite. I mentally slapped myself , because I was thinking about him. Again.
"Nandani! Come back to planet Earth!"
" I just don't want to bring back that unfortunate event to discussion again Navya so-"
" Kayyy. Got it.Anyways when's the interview for Steelings Airways?" Navya asked. I was shivering beyond my control and poked my head out of the door to see if the rain was stopping.
" Next week. By the way why are you guys arranging a party so early? It's only like 7" I asked amused.
" Surprise. Not really Cabir's bringing his new set of friends today so we prepared a little early. I heard one of them was like uber rich anyways you're invited " Navyas voice went dry at the end. No kidding, the girl could talk.
" Navya not tod-
" Nope. You are. Its at 9." Navya stopped me short. The girl was stubborn and I had no choice. I hated parties, mainly because of the intoxication part and cause it's not my thing. The line cut and I had to mentally prepare for today.
I was a simple girl so I went with the minimum. I hated drawing attention to myself so I went with a black skater dress.
" Not too bad." I mumbled.
" Definitely!" Sam exclaimed beyond her pitch. Sam was always flattering me and today was no different.
" Did you talk to mom today? " I asked twirling to see if my dress was ironed properly.
" Yeah before she headed out to one of her social gatherings." Not a surprise.
" Did she say anything?"
" Yeah Nyonika likes you a lot." She replied with no expression in her face. I can tell she was confused. Who wouldn't be? After what happened on Friday , and to match up to what Mom just said is absolute nonsense.
" How do I look?" I pretended to ignore what she just said.
" Like Nandani. Enchanting." I gushed at her reply and gave a brone crushing hug to Sam.
The loud music were making me unknown to my heartbeats. The house was adorned with christmas lights and I giggled.
" Nandanii!!" Navya ran and crashed a hard hug.
" Woah there. You're suffocating me here!" I cried. Navya didn't let go of the tight grip. I took in the whiff of Navya's vanilla scent. Girl can get really dreamy.
" Love you. Love you. Missed you man. Haven't seen your gorgeous face " Navya let go of me and eyed me head to toe. I knew she would compliment me.
" Killer! Let's go in!" Navya cried and I prepared myself for the horrendous smell of alcohol and strange faces I never saw or will see again.
Aliya, Mukti, and Cabir all huddled into a group chit chatting. I could head their loud giggles from far. Navya and Aliya do clean up nice. Except the once apple scent that roamed this room is now replaced with tequila and beer. The living room was crowded with Cabir many colleagues ,Mukti's hardcore rock friends followed by Aliya's 'fashionably late" friends, and there was me, the uninteresting friend. It wasn't that I had self esteem issues, I lost interest, in well ...me.
"NANDANI!" All said in unison. The whole focus of the party went to me. I ran by their side in embarrassment.
"Could you guys get any louder?" I murmured.
" Lighten up Nans!" Aliya took a sip of her martini. She was giggling nonstop and she was intoxicated all right. Aliya was right, I had been way too uptight these past few weeks. Was it the pressure of my mom, my upcoming interview or something else..I had no clue. Aliya looked ethereal in her floral dress and her heart shades. Her makeup was done to perfection as her cheeks blushed in crimson.
" Aliya you look gorgeous!" I cried.
" As do you!". Aliya ran off to the kitchen to grab ahold of the chips laying there. Cabir grabbed me by my hand and ushered me to his side.
" Haven't seen you in so long Nans!" Cabir embraced me into his soft mushy body. It felt warm and assuring. I loved Cabir to death. The guy was always with me in my bad and good times.
" Could say the same with you! Where were you?"
" The usual. Endless contract one after one " Cabir rolled his eyes in annoyance.
" The party seems kind of dead today"
" Not until you see who else is coming Nans. We have 5 more guests over. Steve, Armaan, Daisy, Anges, and Ma-".
" Cabiraaa" A tall guy that seemes quiet lean physically grabbed in Cabir for a hug. 3 other people were behind him gushing at Cabir. Those were the 5 guests I guess, except the 5th one was missing. They all catched up with Cabir leaving me to the side, dangerously close to the mini bar.
" Anges. Yours beautiful?" So his name was Anges. He was handsome with his strong greek-like features
" Nandani." I replied.
" How long have you known Cabir?" Anges questioned. He asked the bartender for a smirnoff , smiling now and then. He was friendly.
" Since childhood." It was true. In the 4th grade we instantly hit it off.
" May I?" Anges pointed to the endless drinks placed on the bar plates.
" I don't drink actually." Anges laughed harder then he intended to.
" You're in a party and you don't drink?"
" You betcha" I snapped. Drinking wasn't necessarily a thing to boast about. Rust tan eyes appeared again. He entered the party in his blazer and jeans. He greeted the guests and made his way towards Cabir. I rubbed my eyes to see if I was hallucinating. Manik? I held in my breath.
" Manik!!" Cabir crashed into him. My beating was going up rapidly. Anges now left and went back to Cabir. My eyes were refusing to believe this man has appeared back. I turned my back towards them. I had to get out of this party.
" Where's Nans? Nans?" Shit. Cabir no.
" Nandani's right here Cabir" Anges replied. Shit Anges. I hesitatingly turned my back. Mank choked and widened his eyes. I refused to look towards him.
" So this was the Nans you rave about?" Manik smirked. He was stroking the invisible beard he didn't have. Maniks eyes never left mines and I tried my hardest to avoid his face.
" Damn right. Nandani this is manik. Best buddy of mines. And I figured both best buddies of mine should meet. Talk guys" I knew almost all of Cabirs friends. Not once have I heard Cabir mention Manik. I was happy he didn't.
" Hey Nans." Manik said containing the amusement in his face. The jerk was finding this rather funny.
" It's Nandani. Not nans." I snapped.
Manik thought he could call me nans? Who did he think he was. I left the circle Cabir made and went to feel air. I felt suffocated and I desperately needed air. Why am I acting like this? Why am I letting a stranger affect my mood. Get ahold of yourself Nandani.
" I'm sorry." I jumped in fright. Manik was behind me. Oh my god. He smiled touching his too good to be real hair. Why was he apologizing? Why was he here?
" Why are you apologizing Manik?" I felt so personal addressing him as Manik. He turned his way towards the balcony and sat down on the porch.
" I was rude. I know. I just don't like when my mom pressures me into stuff like that. I snapped that day. You should know I'm not that romantic lovey guy" Manik rambled. He looked so drained whilst explaining. I felt so drowsy now. What is happening?
" Apology accepted." I replied.
" Why can't I call you Nans?" Manik stood up and leaned against the wall, and kept rubbing the circles in his palm. He seemed genuinely interested. Oh boy.
" Only those that are close to me can call me that."
" Oh ". Manik sat down again. His eyes never leaving mines. His face was now stiff.
" Why are you here? " I asked. I needed to clear my head. Maniks prescense did exactly the opposite.
" To talk to you." I was left motionless. The Manik I knew from a few days ago was not this Manik. This Manik was endearing. The one I wanted to know more about.
" There's not much to talk about. " I replied. I needed to avoid Manik. He was a risk I couldn't afford to take. He stood up now, taking gradual steps towards me.
" Oh there is" Manik bit his lips so harshly. until he groaned out loud. It saddened me that those once pink lips were now hardened to red. What was he doing? I took a few steps back, remembering there was a wall behind. My breath needy, my palms clammy. No space was left behind until my body was full pushed to the wall. Maniks face inches from mines. Damn he smelled good. His left hand on the wall whilst the right under. His eyes crinkled as he transitioned from a smirk to a dangerous smile. He nuzzled his face under my ears. Oh god.
" You look beautiful " Manik's breath hitched me and I was shivering. I was relieved Manik hadn't seen my face cause I was a mess.
